Actually, it is still not illegal to make backup copies of CDs (even software) for archival/backup purposes.  The RIAA is trying to make it illegal, but they have (so far) failed to do so.  The Doctrine of Fair Use still applies, as does the corresponding Doctrine of First Sale.  Keep in mind, however, that these sections of law permit making copies for personal/archival purposes, not for redistribution. You can rip a CD to play through iTunes or an MP3 player, but you can also make a copy of a Cd to play in your car or while traveling so you don't have to risk damaging the originals.  Neither of those uses are currently illegal under US Code.
