Sadly, Atkinson-Stedco have just ended their duping services. Too much work
for too little money, they say. Call them anyway, as they did nice work for
only $1.00/mounted pair, but they told me that they won't do it again.

I am new to this group. I have just purchased several hundred realist
slides on EBAY and wish to make some copies. Another collector has also
purchased 200 slides from the same vendor. We are interested in making
copies of our slides and then swapping them. I have some general questions,
and if any of you have any time to devote to a "newbie's" questions it would
be greatly appreciated.
1. How much should I reasonably expect to pay to have copies made?
2. Any idea where I can have these copies made? I live in N. California
(the Bay area).
3. How long does a slide last before the color fades or shifts? By making
copies am I preserving the image- since the older slide should lose its color
long before the new copy?
Thanks, in advance.

Dear Leo,
Thank you for your inquiry. There are three practical ways to make copies of
the slides, and I am assuming they are 35 mm slides, color and maybe B&W.
First is the traditional way of slide to slide. We can provide you a bid but
would need a total listing of exactly what you have, are they mounted or
unmounted, and color vs. B&W.
The next way is to shoot the slides back to a digital source i.e., CD-ROM
using a high definition film recorder then transferring back to 35 mm. The
idea behind this approach is that the slides will remain on CD-ROM for almost
60 years under the right conditions without any further loss to the quality
and you can make copies via the transfer back to the film recorder, it pretty
much the latest way to keep the quality up (one of the newest way to preserve
motion pictures and do special effects). Of course in that time period (60
years) I am sure thousands of alternate options could come out. This process
in not as cost effective as coping using traditional slide to slide but less
is loss in the coping process.
Also, and finally when you create a digital copy of the slide for CD-ROM you
can also save it to any magnetic media source like hard disk or removable
disk system allowing you to trade slides and they will look exactly as they
are recorded from an electronic transfer process. With software and new
equipment techniques today lots of preservation improvements and loss to the
originals and even improving originals can be digitally made. Again,
depending on the need will determine your best method.
I hope this helps in your decision making process about some of the options.
If I can be of further assistance then feel free to contact me again.
Sincerely yours,
Larry Eells

Depends, if the slides are kodachrome, they should last for a very long time.If
you have copies made, the originals might last longer.

TO:
Chris Olson, David Thompson, Larry Kaufman, David Kuntz, Oliver Dean - you

Reference to our opinions of the 1999 Catalogue:
This catalogue is a model for what a Stereo Exhibition Catalogue should look
like. It is well organized, full of information, even helpful hints, but
most importantly it exhibits beautiful color reproductions of the better
entries. It's a pleasure to see and a 'must' to keep forever.
We are photography. That's it, bottom line. It is a shame to turn out a
catalogue that is not as good - photographically - as it can be. The SCSC
book fills the bill.
If it costs me a few bucks more to keep it up to these standards, that is
just fine.
I think that having the slides and cards in one book is the right way to go.
Slides or cards, they're both 3D and seeing both is simply twice as enjoyable
- and educational. Don't change that.
Keep it like you've got it now, and thanks.
To Oliver Dean - yea I sure could use any info on how to use the photoshop.
In fact I could even use info on how to use the internet.

Thursday, May 20th is The Final Club Competition of the year.
It looks like there will be a lot of makeup slides, so please get
to the meeting by 7:30 PM. This is the last chance for you to enter
slides to count for the Slide of the Year Competition. Plus we will be
treated to a collection of slides from the late Marjorie Webster.
Mitchell Walker has culled through the vast collection of slides
that Marjorie left to the club to put together, what should prove to
be an interesting stereo slide show.
The Nomination Committee has come up with a list of candidates
for the four elected offices for the 1999/2000 club year. Additional
floor nominations will be taken at the meeting. The fun begins at
7:30 PM at the usual place, the Wilshire United Methodist Church,
711 South Plymouth Blvd., just off Wilshire near Crenshaw, west
of downtown Los Angeles.

Thanks for all your suggestions about finding, or not finding, local L.A
area labs that will print Realist size negatives. The good news is that I
just heard from Grand Photo and learned that they are still in business,

Hi,
Maybe you'll want to see this jewel of a stereo program. It's going to
be projected at the regular monthly meeting of the San Diego Stereo CC
(4th Wed.-Balboa Park) April 28 at 7:30PM at the Photo Arts Bldg. (near
Spanish Village) not to be confused with the Photo Arts Museum on the
Prado, also in Balboa Park.
This PSA Stereo Club program was the first effort to honor and preserve
the finest slides made since the introduction of amateur stereo
photography. In 1962 the David White Co. (Stereo Realist) started
duplicating the top exhibition stereo slides for several years, to
create this collection of over 100 prize winning stereos from the early
leading practitioners of the art. The 45 min. narration is accompanied
by appropriate background music. This was the precursor to the later PSA
Stereo Hall of Fame programs consisting of the most successful stereos
entered in the PSA sanctioned International Stereo Exhibitions/Salons
since.

I'm confused Carole. Are you asking about color negs or color positives
(slides). Any lab can do color negs (try A&I in L.A.). Going from slides to
prints is very expensive but
if that is what you want I can recommend an excellent printer in Boston. Let

>>Sorry Carole -- we don't know of any other labs offering the services
that Grand Photo does. The alternative is to take your negs to local one hour
labs until you find an owner who is willing to center each negative, even
though it means that he will print a little of the image on either side of
it, on 3.5" x 5" paper. Then trim and mount them yourself.
Hope that helps.

Good morning to the members of the SCSC email reminder list,
Sorry for the length of this email. The first paragraph explains
what will happen, the rest explains why.
We have been sending out these email reminders for some
time now. I believe it is time to take them to the next level.
So we have begun the SCSC e-group. Within the next few
days I will add everyone's email address the the new SCSC
email list, which will make these reminders interactive.
We do have a diverse group getting these emails, most are
SCSC members, some have asked to be reminded others
were submitted by friends or just because you are local to
Southern California. There are some duplicate email addresses.
In the past we have occasionally asked if you were receiving
duplicate reminders, so we will assume that you want to remain
on the list as it goes forward in its new form. If you do not want
to be added to the list (or we don't have the best email address
for you), please reply and we will follow your wishes.
Something that is becoming very popular with members of groups
with email access, are group lists. There are numerous options on the
internet to start your own group email list. http://www.onelist.com
and http://www.egroups.com are two very popular sites. These are
just perfect for a camera club, school, teams or even a family.
Some time ago I started a list for members of my family who are
spread all across the United States and it has really brought us closer
together.
There are numerous pluses to the new list. You can tell a friend and
they can add themselves. We can put an invitation on our website
and people can click a button and add themselves. Plus it is
interactive.
I have set the list up so replies to an email are sent to every member.
You can of course edit the destination of a reply and send it to only
one individual. Plus anyone that is aware of an activity in Southern
California can make a posting. In addition to reminders of meetings
of the Stereo Club of Southern California, anyone can email the
group and tell of other exciting events that we might not know about.
For instance did you know about the stereo slide show in Yucca
Valley the first of this month (darn, I missed that), did you know
that T2-3D has actually started at Universal Studios Hollywood
(even though the ads state coming May 6th) look for long lines!
Did you know that SCSC member Dan Gilvezan
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Gilvezan,+Dan
appears in the April 29th special two hour Diagnosis Murder
television show. That last 'did you know' isn't 3D related, but might
be of interest to SCSC members.
I am the first to know how important ones time is and the last
thing we need are a bunch of emails coming to us that we are
not interested in receiving. Plus their are numerous other email
lists for everything from 3D photography to who knows what!
This list is intended to be used to notify others of 3D events in
and around the Southern California area. There might be a
question from someone new to stereo photography in the Los
Angeles area, and while this would be best sent to Photo3D,
not everyone is on that list. So we can help either off or on
the list.
Some of the features of the new list are:
Web interface to read old postings,
Flexible group policies currently unmoderated and public
(all can read the old postings, but must join to post new ones,
which should reduce any Spam sent to the list), the list also uses
a proprietary spam detector to block spam.
No software to install,
Reliable. 95% of all messages delivered in 50 seconds or less!
Full-text searchable.
A control panel for all groups on eGroups.com
Messages readable via e-mail, on the Web, or in digests.
You can change to digest form (but you won't have instant notification).
You can also unsubscribe.
A Group polling feature,
Users can add themselves by entering their e-mail addresses
into the membership form found with the group's messages on the
eGroups.com site.
Our group's messages, calendar, polls, and more are available at
http://www.egroups.com/list/scsc/
To sum up, I will add everyone to the list and you will receive a
welcome message. If you are really interested and ready to go,
you can add yourself. If you should have any questions, feel free
to email me and I will try to answer them.
Thanks for the time,

Interesting setup we've got here. I'll be curious to see how it works.
