Well, the background noise I got on the handset was enough for me to
determine that the PSU was the fault. It's unlikely the that PSU is
the fault in your case though...

This probably rules out earthing problems then.

The best way to troubleshoot is to disconnect as much as possible
without making your system unusable - so, that'd mean disconnecting
your printer from the extension and your PC. I still think this
unlikely to be the problem though, although possible.
Have you tried disconnecting all devices from your telephone line,
apart from the Solo? Maybe the problem is coming from that side of
things.

Ok, but if there are earth problems, then it could also come in via
the serial cable - that's what happened to me anyway. I was lucky
enough to have 2 computers, and a spare PSU handy, so I was able to
track the problem down.
