Hi all;
Well, I managed to download a 30 day trial of Classic Phonetools
version 4. Not from BVRP - they're not great believers in free
trials, presumably because of programs like "Serials 2000".
Sadly, the version I got is in French; but it does run under XP, and
it does allow you to collect faxes from the Solo which have been
received while the PC was turned off.
It does a lot of other things too - none of which I want; but as it
has a perfectly adequate fax driver for sending faxes, I will have
to think about buying it.
The reason is simple - At the moment, I am using Starwise's
excellent Solo Messenger to pick up faxes, and XP's Fax monitor to
send them. But XP doesn't like me using anything other than XP, and
it keeps sneaking the Solo out of independent mode, so messenger
can't connect - and the Solo won't receive faxes. If I dump MS fax
completely, I shouldn't have that problem any more, and I can use
the BVRP software to send faxes, and Messenger to collect them.
I could, of course, use Phonetools for both, but it's a very
unwieldy interface; and it seems to be getting very proprietary - I
didn't ask it to, but it cheerfully found and imported my Outlook
Express address book; and as it handles e-mails, that's just one
more route for viruses to attack.
Happy New Year;
Tim Turner
