Are you using the Flex tools? We have been running them for a couple of
years with the 'A4 and have never had any problem with the serial
interrupts, but we do have a problem with breakpoints in external ROMs,
FLASH etc. How do you get them to work?

Thanks,

Andrew

I just heard from Noral. They have a couple of ways to start up. One is
connect their pod, using their PC software tell the pod what mode you want
to be in (and you can specify non special i.e. normal expanded wide, etc)
and to issue a reset to your target. This is the mode we have been using.
Noral resets the target and everything except for serial port 1 works like
it should.

The other way is 'Hot Insert' where your target code is already running then
you attach the cable to your target. Telling the PC software you are using
the Hot insert mode will not issue a reset, and it will sync to your program
counter. Using this mode, the serial port is getting receiver interrupts
before the cable is connected and continues to get the interrupts after.
Problem solved (well, not really, just a workaround).

So beware if using Noral - If the pod issues the reset, serial port 1 (0
works ok) receive ints wont work correctly. Even though the serial port
control registers will show correct setup.

Lastly, I would like to say we are pleased with the Noral BDM pod so far.
Hoping there are no more issues. We evaluated a few different pods and
debug software. All we reviewed failed to support at least one of things we
needed. We need the debugger to work with both banked RAM and ROM in
expanded mode, C level debug and a way to deal with not having hardware
breakpoints in the A4. Noral does all of this and is especially slick with
breakpoints.

I'm not that familiar with Noral's cable. However, one possible difference
is what mode you end up in. During startups with BDM, the processor
goes into special mode as opposed to normal mode. This means there
are differences such as the use of EPORT pins.

Hello all,

I'm using the Noral BDM pod and an A4 target board. I'm communicating with
some legacy boards of ours on serial port 1. The code is working fine while
the pod is not connected. After connecting the pod, the message is sent
out, the legacy board responds and sends back the 'OK' message (I see this
using a protocol analyzer) but the receive interrupt of the A4 target never
fires. Just pulling the pod connector off the target allows the code to
work correctly. Is there something fundamental that I'm missing here? Do
BDM pods steal resources from serial port 1? In the BDM section of the
manual it says some on chip peripherals have a BDM control bit which allows
for suspending the peripheral function during BDM. The example they give is
the timer. I found the timer control bit and looked for something similar
in the serial control registers, and did not. Noral has yet to respond
to this question so I was hoping someone here might have some insight.

Thanks in advance,
Jared O'Mara

Are you sure you are using the correct programming algrithm?
In the past when I got "addresses out of range" it was because
I had selected the wrong algorithm.

I have tried everything suggested to get P&E's toolset to properly upload
code to a 68HC912DT128A and then debug it, but nothing works. I need to
check some assumptions with this group.

If I compile for ORG $4000, Prog12z appears to put the code in the right
place. Since I'm in single-chip mode, and only interested in the fixed
chunks of Flash, I would think this is ok. I understand (at least I'm
told), that Prog12Z is actually placing the code in page 6 ($18000) of the
flash. Even if this is true, I would think that by changing the value of
PPAGE inside the debugger, I ought to be able to see my code at one of these
addresses, right? Or am I missing something? Regardless of what value I
stick into PPAGE in the debugger, I see nothing but $FF's at all flash
addresses.

I was advised to origin my code at $8000, assemble the code and then run
"log2phy progname.s19 7 6". Having done this, Prog12z reports that
addresses are out of range, and it cannot program the chip at all. Needless
to say, if I tell it to do it anyway, neither Show Module nor the debugger
can find the code at any PPAGE address.

I have read everything I can find about physical vs. logical addresses, and
the basic bank-switching scheme does not seem that difficult. Since the
fixed addresses are there all the time (as they have to be) in single chip
mode, it SHOULD be a simple matter to program this chip, one would think.
One would be wrong.

Has anyone actually created a program which they have successfully
programmed into this chip and debugged using ICD12z? If so, would it be
possible to get a look at what actually works?

Thanks,

Paul

Yes, I clicked on the link in my mail reader (Mozilla) and the .pdf file
opened in the the mail window replacing the original email. (Very smooth)
I am registered with Yahoo! and have allowed cookies to be set. This

I also got the notification and was unable to access the file.
I followed the suggestion to register but absolutely could not et it to
work.
I'm running a non-MS browser (Mozilla RC1) rather than IEx. Yahoo
refused to allow me to sign up
insisting that my cookids were disabled, the funny thing is that I was
using the cookie manager to watch
Yahoo writing cookies to my machine while this was going on!!
Since I don't want to contribute to the co-opting of standards by MS I
won't use IE, so it's off to Richard's
list for me also.

You select your own ID and password by registering at Yahoo.

The advertising bit is mostly out of your control. TANSTAAFL!!!! You can
pay the "no-advertising" fee or just ignore it.

I know that Motorola could negotiate a spam free list if they wanted
to??????????????

So just go register, get your ID and password, op out of all of the
marketing options, and get on with life.

Yahoo is not nearly so bad as the alarmists would have you believe.

If you did see this then go to http://subscribe.yahoo.com/showaccount

Thanks Bill,
did need an ID to download a file, so set one up.
Is there a way to turn off the advertising that gets attached or is that out
of our control?

Ian, I am not 100% sure of what I am going to say. So take it with a
couple of truck loads of salt and don't blame me it I am wrong.

First you don't need an yahoo ID to get, send, subscribe, or
un-subcribe from the list. You do all of that by sending (and getting
emails).

I am not sure that you need to one to download a file if you use
direct link that was posted an earlier message. I say that as I have
an account and have it set to "remember" it (a cookie in the browser
file).

You don't need an ID to read from the web view.

You do need an ID to post files and probably to post messages via web
view.

AFAIK just being subscribe to the email list does not give you an ID
so you need to go setup an yahoo account. Just make sure and turn off
your marketing preferences when you do.

One the web view there is an link to register a new account.

As far as the original message goes, I saw once that National
Instruments actually had a whole line of ATD converters that did this
and they had a number of excelent white papers on it, but I can no
longer find this. A relatively quick google search for the original
article turned up this instead, which you might like (look under tech
notes)

http://www.chipcenter.com/TestandMeasurement/main.html

The one thing that I remember that I didn't see mentioned here is
that you need to be able to add in some kind of carefully controlled
ramp or white noise. Averaging a bunch of the same signals will give
you the same signal back; you need to make it go up and down in such
a way that you can take measurements at your resolution, but infer
the higher resolution signal. I suspect that something could be done
with a resister divider with sigma-delta style modulation, but that
would be hard.

Hi All,

P&E's FAQ's refer to a Motorola document entitled HC12EABI.PDF, but the
links to the file are broken. Using Google, I cannot find this file
anywhere, nor can I turn it up using Motorola's search engine. Does anyone
have a copy they could forward to me, or does anyone know the current
location of this file?

Thanks - I will look into preferences if the problem persists and before
burdening the list with further OT ramblings. I did not create this list
account at Yahoo, so I assumed that my settings would be set optimally for
use by Motorola or Yahoo.

Since the initial message this morning, all of the replies I received to my
dissertation were formatted in an acceptable manner - that is to say,
without having attached messages. I do not know what caused the problem
earlier so I will hold any future chastisements in abeyance for now.

Steve,
got your mail from both Motorola and Yahoo groups.
It wasn't an attachment and the advert was at the end, so not too bad.

Regards

Ian

STRIKE 1 (Yahoo at the plate, HC12 users on the mound!)

Bob, and others who may lend an ear - I'll give it back later. :)

I received your "a/d oversampling" post that you made to the yahoogroups
list as an attachment with this yahoo ignoragram as the sole content of the
body of the message. First I thought that Yahoo had messed up the first
posting to the new list that I have seen and dumped the real information -
your post. I pondered, maybe they dumped the real stuff in the attachment.
I said to myself, "Self, surely they would not do that! How rude would that
be?" I opened the attachment and BINGO - there it was!

I thought the primary purpose of this list was to serve the HC12 community
and Yahoo's financial needs second. They have it backwards - IMHO! They
need to serve the customer first and then the customer will keep coming
back. Then - just maybe - we will click on one of their sponsor's links out
of appreciation for the service they are providing us and perhaps even buy
something. (Translation: Pay attention Yahoo marketing types that are
monitoring this list for customer satisfaction, etc. - Yeah Right!) As a
minimum they should put their adverts at the bottom of our messages - or at
least in a single message without any attachments. The content of the
poster's message is, after all, what we want and need to see. I do not have
time to waste weeding through useless advertisements and dig through
attachments to find what I need. I might tolerate the ads if they were
remotely related to our field - something that would increase our
profitability or help us complete our tasks faster. If I am going to have to
keep opening attachments each time I get a posting then something is going
to change... this is going to be very painful and frustrating.

I am a little frustrated this morning over this. Perhaps for no reason. I
realize that this is a sample of one so, I apologize for venting - Am I the
only one getting the message posts this way (as attachments!)? Does this
bother anyone else? If this is the way it is going to be then I vote for
Richard's List!!! He has a vested interest - unlike Yahoo - in keeping the
HC12 community happy and has promised to keep the list clean and fair!

Someone told me he could increase the a/d res by oversampling..... like cvt 8 bits to 10 bits by taking the sqrt of the sum of 4 samples or something..... This sound right? whats the actual formula?

Welcome to the Motorola 68HC12 list. Looking forward to many
interesting discussions to come. I have included the invitation text
below so that it will be available in the archive to those who wish
to refer back to it.

Paul Atkinson, List Moderator
Motorola 16-bit Applications

Motorola is transitioning each Majordomo-based Microcontroller mail
list to a Yahoo Groups user forum. Motorola will transfer your email
list subscription to Yahoo Groups for you. The Yahoo Groups forum
allows new capabilities and versatility that our old system cannot
offer.

You do not need web access to join the group. As a subscribed member
you will continue to get emails with postings from other group
members. You can post an email to the group by addressing your
message to 68HC12@yahoogroups.com. You can unsubscribe from the group
by sending a blank message to 68HC12-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.
Other useful commands are found at
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/groups-03.html.

If you do not want us to transfer your subscription to Yahoo, please
send an email to the list owner at 68HC12-owner@yahoogroups.com with
your request.

Please consider registering with Yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/ to
take advantage of the web-based features of the Yahoo Groups forum.
With the web-based system you can view posted messages in an easy-to-
navigate 'thread-linked' interface and fetch archived messages. You
can select email, digest, or no email (web only access) options.

We feel that this transition is an important step to improve
communication within the Motorola microcontroller user community. We
expect this process to take about a week, so you may be receiving 2
postings of the same message until all current members are
transitioned. The Majordomo server will be shut down when the process
is complete.

Thank you for using the Motorola microcontroller discussion groups.
