Re: Hello, is the ST80 Orion a good candidate for birding observations?

Hello Paulo,

Are you buying a particular scope in a store or from an individual? Where are
you located?

The 80mm f/5 built by Synta and sold by Orion and Celestron, among others, is a
popular spotting/birding scope. You will want the 45 degree erect image
diagonal, and a mount suitable for use on a photo-type tripod.

An eyepiece in the 20mm as well as the 10mm range will be useful.

The Synta scope you are asking about has a built-in t-mount thread on the end of
the 1.25 inch eyepiece holder, it is easy to attach a camera to this.

I got mine complete in a case on ebay inexpensively, the current popular small
refractor is an ED type, so many of the ST80 types are available used these
days.

Frank

Paul - The ST80 is good for visual observations, but there is a little false color so I would not recommend it for photography. As Leo says, a Right Angle...

... Hi, There is some color, but it is not that bad for a scope that is currently $209 (has been $189-$249 USD). I took many astrophotos with one before I...
