Earth Community and a sustainable future require us to improve our patterns and methods of self-government at all levels including the global. If the UN isn't working, we have no one to blame but ourselves. The UN -- stop bemoaning it; start owning it!
UN reform includes:
* reform of the Peoples (creating global public voting and capacities for receiving UN global TV and radio broadcasting);
* reform of the Governments (weighted UN voting, regional seating on the SC, and predictable UN financing); and
* rationalization of the UN and Bretton Woods structures.
Let us look at the Report of the UN High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges, and Change; Kofi Annan's "In Larger Freedom;" and the US Institute of Peace's "American Interests and the UN."
Let's also explore the Constitution for the Federation of Earth, the Global People's Assembly, the Earth Charter, the World Social Forum, and the role of world religions in UNESCO's Global Movement for a Culture of Peace.
Let's examine global democratization, but in *all* its dimensions: adversarial, non-adversarial, direct, indirect, political, economic, and communicational (media access issues).
Richard Falk's "A Study of Future Worlds" is an excellent resource. Visit our Files section to see others.
In line with the Millennium Development Goals and the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2015), let us start moving NOW toward sustainability, economic fairness, and "global democracy without hypocrisy."
Let us unite our efforts, free democracy from the box of the nation-state, reverse the perverted US vision of "democracy through empire," and turn toward the vision of Earth Community.
As Kofi Annan stated,
“Together we are the ultimate power. If we pull our efforts together, we can get almost everything done – all of us around the world – ‘We the People’.”
