Hi,
     I am new here and have not yet played with AJAX.

I am PC programmer who has migrated net based software such as DHTML, PHP MySQL etc.

I am interested in creating custom 'Web 2.0' web sites but I don't want to be tied into the limitations of a particular package such as AJAX.

I tried the code below and it is functional but I have some issues with it.

1) 'id' is not a valid DOM property of 'script' I was thinking of doing things this way myself but I want to stay within the DOM so as not to have compatibility issues.

2)  CreateElement and AppendChild may not work as expected.

You can create an element and then there is a need to AppendChild.

Does RemoveChild actually DELETE the element or just remove it association with it's parent?

I suspect that RemoveChild only removes the association and not the actual element. This would result in ever growing resources being consumed on the client as more dynamic content has been transferred?

Having said that,I will play with this code until I get the results I want.

I was intending to have the head.script element in the original HTML and just change the src attribute.

For data in the other direction client>>server, I was playing with events dynamically linking to

<img src="SomePhpScriptThatOutputsAnImage.jpg?mydata=09902183">
OR
<script src="PhpUpdateData.js?mydata=887382">
OR
<script src="PhpUpdateData.PHP?mydata=887382">

It seems that browsers don't care what the extension is as long as the server sends back the correct header.

One tool I would like to have is a debugging script that shows all active nodes on the current document.

This would help me in those tricky instances where there are two <head> elements in one document.

Was anyone seen such a script of do I have to write it from scratch?

Thanks, Rob.

The scripts I used for testing -
--------------------------------
Filename testjs.htm
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<script>
function test1(){
var script = document.createElement('script');
script.src = 'servertest1.js';
script.type = 'text/javascript';
script.defer = true;
var head = document.getElementsByTagName('head').item(0);
head.appendChild(script);
}
function test2(){
var script = document.createElement('script');
script.src = 'servertest2.js';
script.type = 'text/javascript';
script.defer = true;
var head = document.getElementsByTagName('head').item(0);
head.appendChild(script);
}
</script>
<span onmouseover="test1();">(Test 1) Mouse over here</span>
<span onmouseover="test2();">(Test 2) Mouse over here</span>
</body>
</html>
--------------------------------
Filename servertest1.js
alert('Hello client, I am server(1)');
--------------------------------
Filename servertest2.js
alert('Hello client, I am server(2)');
----------------------

Original code.

var script = document.createElement('script');
script.src = 'server.js';
script.type = 'text/javascript';
script.defer = true;

var head = document.getElementsByTagName('head').item(0);
head.appendChild(script);

var head = document.getElementsByTagName('head').item(0);
script.id = 'lastLoadedCommands';
var old = document.getElementById('lastLoadedCommands');
if (old) head.removeChild(script');

Invitation
We are looking forward to welcoming you in the heart of "Big Sky
Country" for the Eighth World Wide Web Applications Conference. This
event will be held in Bloemfontein from Tuesday 5 to Friday 8
September 2006.
The city of Bloemfontein
Bloemfontein is situated in the Free State Province, in central South
Africa.
As South Africa's judicial capital, Bloemfontein has become known
through the years as the "Central City", "The Hospitable City" and
"The City of Roses".
All these designations indicate that it is a city in which not only
residents, but also visitors and tourists feel truly at home and welcome.
The City, established by Dutch and English settlers in the middle
1800s, is a true blend of the past, present and future. What keeps the
past so alive, is the unobtrusive and almost natural inclusion of an
impressive and historical heritage into the very life of a modern,
developing city.
Graceful charm is to be seen all along the historical, tree-lined
President Brand Street, a declared national conservation area.
Bloemfontein's rich cultural and historical heritage is reflected in
its museums, art galleries and cultural festivals. The city also
offers excellent recreational, shopping and entertainment facilities.

Keynote speaker

Stephen Downes

He is currently based in Moncton, New Brunswick (Canada), at the
Institute for Information Technology's e-Learning Research Group.
Stephen has become a leading voice in the areas of learning objects
and metadata as well as the emerging fields of weblogs in education
and content syndication. Stephen is perhaps best known for his daily
research newsletter, OLDaily (short for Online Learning Daily), which
reaches thousands of readers across Canada and around the world.
To learn more about this remarkable person, please visit Stephen's
website: www.downes.ca/me/index.htm

Theme of keynote address:
Learning objects: What are they good for?
The idea behind learning objects was that course designers could
discover and re-use existing learning content. To some degree this has
taken hold, but today the concept has more critics than it has
supporters. In this talk Stephen will contend that the fundamental
idea behind learning objects is not misguided - that is, that there is
a great demand and use for re-usable learning content, but that its
application was flawed. Learning objects were supposed to free
content, to make it accessible to everyone, including (and especially)
students. They were supposed to support the sharing of content as a
public good, not the hoarding of digital assets as a commodity. The
idea of learning objects is not dead, but we need to re-think how we
have been approaching sharable and re-usable learning resources.
Programme
The complete programme will be available in August.

Theme: E-Learning 2.0: Tools and Topics
The web is more than a place where you consume content - it is a place
where you create things, do things and interact with your friends. The
tools and technologies that make this possible are known collectively
as "Web 2.0" and learning that takes advantage of these new tools is
called "E-Learning 2.0". This workshop will explore blogs and
blogging, podcasting and audio creation, video and vodcasting, social
networking, tagging, folksonomies and more. The presenter is a leading
innovator in E-Learning 2.0 and the author of a popular e-learning
newsletter, OLDaily.

Hello,
I am student of final year B.Tech in computer science and engineering.
I am working on a web project which uses JSP and AJAX.
Now, I need help in accessing Hindi (Devnagri) values of parameters. I
am writing aprogram chunk here to understand problem.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I need your help in developing an AJAX web application.

Our EntryPointFunction is sendText() on client side HTML page
On client side,
function sendText(){
   var url = "http://localhost:8080/ajax/Process.jsp";
           if (!http){
             alert('Giving up :( Cannot create an XMLHTTP instance');
             return false;
         }
   http.open("POST", url, true);

http.setRequestHeader("Content-Type","application/x-www-form-urlencoded;
charset=UTF-8");
   http.onreadystatechange = handleHttpResponse;
   var reqdata="speechField="+ "&#2310;&#2346;&#2325;&#2368;

   http.send(reqdata);
}
function getHTTPObject() {
  var xmlhttp;
  /*@cc_on
   @if (@_jscript_version >= 5)
    try {
     xmlhttp = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
     } catch (e) {
     try {
      xmlhttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
      } catch (E) {
      xmlhttp = false;
      }
     }
   @else
    xmlhttp = false;
   @end @*/
  if (!xmlhttp && typeof XMLHttpRequest != 'undefined') {
   try {
     xmlhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
     } catch (e) {
     xmlhttp = false;
     }
    }
    return xmlhttp;
}

var http = getHTTPObject(); // We create the HTTP Objectvar req;
  var req;

function handleHttpResponse() {
  if (http.readyState == 4){
   if (http.status == 200){
    var pos = http.responseText.indexOf('.');
    var len = http.responseText.length ;

parent.control_panel.MediaPlayer21.FileName=http.responseText.substring(pos,len-\
1);//34-56
    //parent.control_panel.MediaPlayer21.FileName="./speech/thanks.wav";
    alert("hi "+parent.control_panel.MediaPlayer21.FileName);
   }else{
    alert('There was a problem with the request.');
   }
  }
}
On server side,
Process.jsp
<%@ page contentType="text/plain;charset=utf-8" %>
<%@ page language="java" %>
<%@ page import="java.io.*" %>
<%@ page import=" java.util.*" %>
<%@ page import="java.net.*" %>
<%
if(request.getCharacterEncoding()==null){request.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");}
%>
<% if(request.getParameter("speechField")!=null){ %>
<%
                     out.println("Response is
"+URLDecoder.decode(request.getParameter("speechField"));
%>

Here is, I am facing problem in getting the value of speechField sent
by client. But if sending ASCII character intead of UTF-8 character,
then it works fine.
But I need Hindi text sent by browser.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Kindly help me with aforesaid information at the earliest.

All ya need is a server-side resource capable of outputting XML, and of course Javascript for the client piece.

Also, I've heard about a .Net AJAX library called Atlas... don't know much about it tho.

I think .Net is very very messy for doing AJAX

Just try to generate Javascript using .Net and compare it with
PHP or ASP3.0; then U will know what I am talking about.

The problemo is that .Net tries to control HTML ouput
instead of giving us total power.

.Net was M$'s answer to JAVA but AJAX makes JAVA redundant.
Hence these are the last days of M$.

USE PHP instead

uses flash instead of Java to display videos. ;~)

Dear Pritesh,
I suggest you to test everything with mozilla firefox and download
developer tools for both IE and Firefox. In firefox there is one tool
called javascript debugger which is awesome. I never thought before
that i can debug JavaScript without alert message and document.write.

Give a try.
Hope that helps

Hi,

'POST' does not make a ny sense with xmlhttp, coz it
can't submit a form. 'POST' is equivalent to the
request to a server - 'Please accept this form and all
the elements inside it'

Even if IE doesnt break with this code, it still cant
submit a form.

I would like you to try this in page where there are 2
forms and tell me which form/data got submitted.

Have e nice one !

Krishna

Maybe try using the onload instead of onreadystatechange handler for the FF portion?

Nope. It will show the image when the html and the image are in your
local machine. Try it with a browser supported image format like .jpg
or .gif.

You need a browser on the client side - IE6 or Firefox 1.5 both work well. The client side code is JavaScript and DOM, and would have a script function that looks something like this:

            function loadStates() {
                var localXHR;
                if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { // for mozilla
                    localHXR = new XMLHttpRequest();
                }
                else if (window.ActiveXObject ) { // for ie
                    localXHR = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
                }
                if (localXHR) { // gets executed on the return
                    localXHR.onreadystatechange = function() {
                       // this calls a php page that executes the sql required
                       // and returns the contents of an html select
                        var str = "<select name='selState'>";
                        if (localXHR.readyState == 4) {
                            if (localXHR.status == 200) {
                                str += localXHR.responseText + "</select>";
                                document.getElementById('state').innerHTML = str;
                            }
                        }
                    };
                    var url = "DentistCountParms.php?parm=state";
                    localXHR.open("GET", url, true);
                    localXHR.send(null);
                }
            }

The corresponding PHP executes the SQL required and formats the results into a string,
which it prints:

(DentistCountParms.php excerpt)
<?
$parm = $_GET['parm'];

$output = '';

$db = odbc_connect("odbc name", "username", "password")
    or die("connect error: " . odbc_errormsg());
set_time_limit(900);

         $sql = 'whatever your sql statement needs to be';
         $res = odbc_exec($db, $sql)
             or die('sql error: ' . $sql);
         while (odbc_fetch_array($res)) {
             $state = odbc_result($res, 'state');
             $output .= '<option value=' . $state . '>' . $state . '</option>';
         }
odbc_close($db);
print $output;
?>

I use PHP on the server side, but any server side tool will work, whether it's Java, Ruby, whatever.

Sucheta,
Here's a link to a brief explanation of AJAX:
http://sanctumvoid.net/jsexamples/ajax/ajax.html

Most AJAX programming is client-centric (ie, client-side javascript) but of course you've got the server-side piece as well (pages that accept GET and POST requests and form an XML response).

It's only a security issue if the user turns off their internet restrictions. For my users, I set the intranet zone in IE so that they're prompted to allow ActiveX components. For the extranet, the security remains high, and they're not even asked - nothing gets executed.

That is a good point, which I forgot to mention - you need to lower the security settings for th is to work.
