Subject: Free Home Energy - Do You Need a Commercial System Or Can You DIY?
cfmlgigmgrmi
Send Email Send Email

With the ever rising cost of power to the home, many people have been looking at
harnessing the free energy which is all round us. But do you need to buy a
commercial ready-made system or is it possible to build your own?
For the average home, the cost of heating is outstripping the average wage
increase and many consumers are looking to do something about it. Very few homes
lend themselves easily to the use of wind energy or solar energy because they
were built long before such ideas became a reality. Even now, new homes are
still not being designed to take advantage of free energy sources. The new-build
industry hasn't yet woken up to the increasing awareness and demand of the
knowledgeable homeowner.
You can go out and buy a commercial energy system and have it adapted to fit
your house. However, this can be prohibitively expensive and out of reach for
the average homeowner. While the system will start to make savings as soon as it
is installed, the return on the investment can be over 10 or 15 years. So the
next person to own the home will get the main benefit rather than you!
A viable alternative is to install the free energy system yourself. If you can
do almost any type of DIY competently, then you are well qualified to install
your own system. The components, in terms of wind turbines and solar panels, are
becoming increasingly available and affordable all the time. The technologies
associated with these devices is improving rapidly to the point at which every
home can afford to generate its own electricity.
The big electricity generating companies are a bit slow at promoting the
viability of this technology. It is easy to see why, they have a vested interest
in selling you electricity that they have generated.
So the components are readily available. What about the design and construction
knowledge? There are many people who offer step-by-step instructions to set up
your own energy generator. These are now extremely good and valuable sources of
hints and tips to make the installation a success. They even tell you how to
sell your electricity to the big electricity companies.
I know of many people who have taken the plunge using these instruction packs
and are now reaping the benefits of free home energy. The return on their
investment is usually in the range of 2 to 3 years. So I would go for a DIY
system every time.

Subject: Being Energy Efficient Before Choosing An Alternative Energy Solution For Your
cfmlgigmgrmi
Send Email Send Email

Solar power today isn't the same solar power from the '70's when solar first
found popular favor during the OPEC embargo. Today solar systems are cheaper,
better made and designed with the aesthetics of the building in mind. Along with
solar being much more pleasing to the eye, it is also more pleasing to the
wallet. Federal, State and Local incentives, along with personal tax breaks make
the purchase and installation of a photovoltaic power system, and solar powered
water heaters very affordable. In some areas it is also very feasible to install
a small to medium sized wind generator to supplement the home's power needs.
A photovoltaic system (PV) may not be the complete answer when it comes to
power, depending on where you live. It may only give you supplemental power due
to light availability. But the combination of PV and wind where available should
make a very nice power package for most every lifestyle.
The initial cost can be daunting for any alternative energy solution. Solar or
wind are both expensive to start, and take a bit of time to repay. But people
don't seem to consider the long term effects. You have now given your home its
own power supply. For most people, having your own source of power on a home you
are considering buying, is probably a little more moving than a great bed of
petunias. Today, people know that their homes are their biggest investments,
they also know that a large portion of their bills are going to be in their
utilities. The more you can make your home self reliant for power and also more
energy efficient, the better it is for your bank account.
Also a lot of people think that alternative power is expensive because they
price the size of their PV system based on their current useage. Many people
don't realize that their current useage is probably way more than what they
actually need. To get an accurate idea of how much PV system is actually needed
a person should first make sure that their home is as energy efficient as
possible. Make your home energy efficient before considering alternative energy.
No Cost Energy Efficient Actions:

Turn off everything not in use. Lights, tv's radios.
Check Furnace or AC filter each month.
Clean and replace as needed during hot months,
keep window coverings closed on the south, east and west windows. In winter, let
sun in
Glass fireplace doors help stop heat from being lost up the chimney.
Activate 'sleep' features on computers and office equipment to power down when
not in use.
When cooking, keep the lids on pots. Microwaves are more efficient than ovens.
Use when possible.
Dress for the weather. Its cheaper to put another blanket on the bed than to
turn the ac up
About 15 percent of the average home utility bill is the water heater.
Take shorter showers and only wash full loads of clothes.
Lower the temp of your waterheater.
Only heat rooms you need. Close vents and doors on unused rooms.

Low Cost Energy Efficient Actions:

Install low flow showerheads and sink aerators to reduce hot water use.
Seal and weatherstrip your windows and doors Install a water tank insulation
wrap. They are very cheap and keep the water tank insulated
Check your windows. Old windows may save you from replacement, but that savings
is offset by what you lose in money each month trying to heat/cool a house with
leaky windows
Use ENERGY STAR appliances.
Fluorescent lights use much less energy than standard incandescents

Once your home is energy efficient, and you trim down your usage, then you will
really see what your actual power usage is and most likely see that the
alternative energy solution for your home doesn't need to be quite as large or
expensive as you first thought.

Subject: Energy Efficient Homes vs. Green Building
cfmlgigmgrmi
Send Email Send Email

What's happened to the term energy efficient home? I read the best definition of
an energy efficient home by Dennis Crook. He's built energy efficient homes
since the Carter Administration in the 1980's. His definition of an energy
efficient home follows:
"The energy-efficient home acts as a smooth-functioning machine in which the
equipment produces as much, if not more energy capacity than needed to operate
the ideal human environment, including air quality, moisture conditions,
temperature, and lighting. The ideal energy-efficient home retains the best
environment for human habitation while minimizing the cost of energy."
Thank you for this simple explanation! I finally understand what an
energy-efficient home is.
But, what I don't get then is what green building means?
I hear people suggest growing grass on my roof. Wouldn't I need a flat roof? I
heard flat roofs need repairs more frequently, once every ten years. That is
more than pitched roofs. Where will I put the soil when it needs repaired? When
it needs mowed how does the mover get onto the roof? I already have enough lawn
to mow.
Won't there be added weight on the building from the soil and moisture from
rain? I would be concerned about molds forming from the moist soil.
I certainly don't want my walls made out of straw bail. What happens if a tiny
hole occurs in the wall? That'd be a great nesting place for rodents. What
happens if there is a fire, straw will immediately spark right?
Has anyone really thought through the term "green building"? Or was the term
developed as a new marketing ploy to sell products? I think I'll stick with my
home being energy efficient. At least I understand what it means and won't have
to rebuild my house. Energy efficiency is a series of modifications you can make
to your home to make more efficient then what is it currently operating at.
I recommend you check out Energy Efficient Home Articles. It is a GREAT resource
website that will explain and tell you how to make your home a better operating,
more efficient, money saving, unit.

Subject: Energy Predator - Save Your Home from the Big Bad Wolf
cfmlgigmgrmi
Send Email Send Email

If you're getting eaten up by the big bad wolf of high energy bills, you may be
wise to go to the children's section of your local library and re-read that
knowing little folk tale, The Three Little Pigs.
The popular story - a covert manifesto on energy savings, if ever there was one
- reveals how one very thoughtful pig outsmarted a predator by building a brick
house. The pig's two siblings who built homes of straw and sticks were less
fortunate.
If it seems unlikely that you and yours will be gobbled up any time soon by a
hairy beast that huffs and puffs and eventually blows your house down, think
again. Energy prices are rising, not declining. And the insatiable appetite of
inflation can easily eat away at your budget until it topples your ability to
maintain a cool, comfortable shelter. Unless, of course, you take precautions.
Obviously, not every home needs to be built of brick to survive the elements and
beat the power drain. But experts say common sense and a few upgrades will
improve the energy efficiency of your home and save you some money and misery.
American homeowners now spend more than $160 billion annually to heat, cool and
light their homes. The energy consumed is about 21 percent of this nation's
total, with the most significant demand for electricity and natural gas. Yet
many homeowners could save up to 30 percent on their energy bills by making
improvements. Simply put, energy-efficient homes cost less to own and maintain.
They are far more comfortable to live in as well.
Energy Audits Reveal Flaws in the Straw
The two little pigs that built homes of straw and sticks would have saved
themselves a lot of trouble had they conducted an energy audit before they moved
into their vulnerable abodes. Why not learn from their mistakes?
If you're suffering from high energy bills - winter or summer - or your home is
merely uncomfortable, that's a good indication that an energy audit is needed.
The audit should include analysis of your home's insulation, windows,
heating/cooling system, water heater and lighting. Before you hire a
professional to conduct the audit, contact your utility company and inquire if
free or discounted audits for customers are available. If not, look through the
Yellow Pages for a certified home energy rater.
There's also guidance at www.cheers.org, the California Home Energy Efficiency
Rating Services (CHEERS?). This nonprofit group was founded in 1990 to promote
energy efficiency. It was approved in 1999 by the California Energy Commission
as the first home energy rating provider under the Home Energy Rating System
Regulations. CHEERS now trains and certifies home energy raters.
Another group offering free advice is the American Council for an
Energy-Efficient Economy. ACEEE is dedicated to advancing energy efficiency as a
means of promoting economic prosperity and a healthy environment. The nonprofit
group provides helpful resources, such as a guidebook and checklist
(www.aceee.org/consumerguide) for "buttoning up your house" to improve energy
efficiency.
Hiring a certified energy auditor gives you the advantage of access to the best
technology. In most cases, pro auditors will use sophisticated equipment to help
expose air leaks and areas in your home that are without adequate insulation.
Also, a trained auditor will know what problems to look for in both new and old
houses. Some audit services may even be able to clean, tune up and test your
heating or cooling system during one visit.
While improvements to your home will undoubtedly lower your energy bills, there
are other ways to save. Various home improvements, such as adding insulation,
installing high-quality windows and upgrading a roof may be eligible for the
Federal Energy Tax Credits program. These credits can help offset the cost of
making significant energy-efficient improvements.
An Inside Job
The smart little pig that built the brick house was wise enough to know that
quality doesn't come cheap or easy. It took time to build a shelter that was as
comfortable on the inside as it was durable on the outside.
However, Yosi Avivi, who owns Protective Shutter Systems in Northridge, says
that the one obvious improvement homeowners can make is to shade windows from
the sun. While the cost of shuttering with remote-control, insulated devices can
be expensive, many products are available at reasonable prices.
"Everybody can do fabric awnings. Whenever you have a cover above your head or
above the door, you're going to be a lot cooler," he says.
Avivi says that blocking out the sun not only keeps a house cool, it protects
furniture and fabric from fading - saving the cost of replacing or
reupholstering chairs and sofas. The right kind of window protection will reduce
your electric bill by about 15 percent, adds Avivi.
Protective Shutter Systems has been receiving a lot more calls this season from
prospective clients concerned about high energy bills, Avivi says. One client
who last year hired Avivi's company to shutter a section of his home has come
back for more. "They did one section of the house and saw that it really
worked," he says. "So now they're putting more all around the house."
Quality windows and doors are the next line of defense. About one-third of the
total loss of heat or cool air is the result of rotted or damaged windowpanes,
cracked glass and poorly fitted frames. If your windows and doors are generally
in good shape, they don't need to be replaced. But weather-stripping and
caulking will help seal the deal.
After securing the outer skin of your home, the next step is to make interior
changes. With a little research, homeowners can find appliance brands that have
earned the Energy Star designation, which denotes products that have met strict
energy-efficiency guidelines set by the federal Environmental Protection Agency
and the Department of Energy. That dishwasher that groans and warbles every time
you turn it on might not seem like much of a drain on your energy bill, but it
is. And a series of relatively small improvements can add up to big savings.
The efficiency of heating, venting and cooling systems (HVAC) can be improved by
checking filters on a monthly basis - especially during times of heavy use.
Sealing heating and cooling ducts also is important. And just a like a car, your
HVAC will benefit from an occasional tune-up.
Finally, to top off your energy-improvement project, put the proper hat on your
home. Metal, coated tiles, membrane and sprayed on polyurethane roofing all
offer certain advantages. But shop around for the best price and then rest easy
knowing you've done everything possible to protect against the seasonal huffing
and puffing of you know who.

With the cost of living expenses on the rise, there are always people on a
search to find ways to save money, save energy and cut costs. Aside from
completely eliminating the energy expense (which is highly unlikely to happen),
reducing the expense of energy consumption simply requires finding creative ways
to save. While the traditional methods of saving energy such as turning off
lights, setting your thermostat on a particular setting and only using the
energy utility when you need it are practical ways, one methods that is fast
becoming popular is through the act of energy deregulation. Although the concept
of energy deregulation may be fairly new, the idea of saving money isn't. As
consumers find ways to save money, they are also seeking ways to save energy
through utilities. That way is becoming available to consumers through companies
like Ambit Energy.
Ambit Energy allows consumers the opportunity and flexibility to choose which
electrical and gas company utility providers they desire to handle their energy
needs. Through energy deregulation, the consumer can choose which companies they
want to do business with. Placing the control back into the hands of the
consumer proves not only to be empowering for the consumer, but also helps the
consumer save energy as they save money.
Consumers have more buying power than they give themselves credit for. They are
able to control a greater portion of utility expenses than they may be aware of.
Through companies like Ambit Energy, these control points are highlighted as
Ambit places the tools and resources in the consumer's hand to employ ways to
save energy.
One way the consumer saves money is by using only what energy resources he needs
and only paying for resources he uses. There are no additional fees for
administrative or technical usage by the utility company and no unnecessary
billing for services not used or not needed. Because energy deregulation is
quickly becoming a more preferred way for consumers, it is likely that this will
also cause exceptional cost savings in the future for the consumer and for the
usage of energy as a whole.
Because companies like Ambit are on the forefront of making this service
available to the consumer, there will most likely be an increased interest in
saving energy and saving money as people seek more opportunities for both. For
the consumer, and for Ambit Energy, it is a win-win situation.
