Hi Chris,

Thanks for your response and encouragement  As an "administrator" - the ony account I have setup on Vista - I installed HelperNet, then reinstalled ASCOM platform 5.0a (
Vista reports the ASCOM 5.0a was successfully installed), followed by the Celestron Driver which immediately reports that ASCOM 5 Platform is required.  It still doesn't find the platform.  Of course, SNP 6.3.3 says it can't find the Scope Chooser when trying to configure the scope.

What has Bill Gates wrought???  Unfortunately, my version of Vista (Home Premium) doesn't allow a "downgrade" to WinXP.

Any further suggestions welcomed..........thanks for your thoughts!

Cheers,

Joe

Your suspicion of Vista is probably well founded. It seems to be failing
to read the version from the registry and that's being reported as the
wrong version.

Try installing HelperNet (it's in the files area of this group). It is
designed to avoid this sort of thing. Then try installing the Celestron
driver again.

And make sure you are installing as Administrator. I think Vista will
insist on this because the installer has "setup" in the name but you
never know.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Joe,

If you installed the ASCOM platform after HelperNet then it might be
worth installing HelperNet again, just in case the install of the ASCOM
platform overwrote something.

I'd do this by uninstalling everything, then installing the ASCOM
platform, HelperNet and the Celestron driver in that order.

Other checks:
Try choosing the scope simulator. That's part of the platform install.
If that works then it indicates that most of the platform is installed.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

No luck....I uninstalled everything, including SNP, then went through the steps you detailed.  Still get the ASCOM Celestron Driver notice that the ASCOM 5.0a is not installed.  Thus far, that seems to be the problem.

I'm taking up knitting as a hobby..........but then again, those knitting needles have sharp points and as of now, I'm certain there are authority figures who would want to keep me away from sharp objects..... :-$

Eagerly awaiting any further suggestions, and thanks to Chris for the help!

One thing to try.

On Vista, when installing ASCOM components, always “Run As Administrator”. In Vista, even though your user account is an administrative account, you still don’t run with full admin rights unless you explicitly tell Vista that’s what you wanted. Your installer package should either be a .exe file or there should be a .exe file supplied with the .msi file, right click the .exe file and “Run As Administrator”. This seems to give the installer some additional permissions that allow it to successfully update the ASCOM registry keys. We do know that this stuff works on Vista so it should be a matter of just getting the right sequence.

I suggest:

1.       ASCOM Platform 5.0a

2.       Client Access Toolkit update from www.ascom-standards.org

3.       HelperNET latest version from the files section on ASCOM-Talk.

4.       Any drivers that you wish to install.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your help.  It's encouraging to know that someone out there has the good fortune of having it work with Vista!

I'm going to once again remove everything, then go through the process as described, making sure that "Run as administrator" is selected at every opportunity.  The only thing I don't see that option available is the ASCOM 5.0a platform, which I presume is because it is an msi installer package, rather than .exe.

Back at it.....and thanks again!

I thought Bob was distributing the .exe file with the .msi file for 5.0a – if not, you may have an obsolete copy! Make sure you download a fresh copy from www.ascom-standards.org – if that STILL doesn;t have the setup.exe file included, then you need to create a DOS batch file that just launches teh .msi file. You can right-click on the .bat file and Run As Administrator. You MUST launch the install using Run As Adminsitrator under Vista or it will not work. It may appear to work, but it will not.

Hi Tim,

The latest version I've found on the ASCOM site is an MSI file.  I've created a BAT file so I can follow the instructions you've provided.  Thanks for the tip!  I'm (once again) in the process of uninstalling everything, and tomorrow I'll take another shot at it....thanks for the tip!

Cheers,

Joe

Make sure you download a fresh copy from www.ascom-standards.org – if that STILL doesn;t have the setup.exe file included, then you need to create a DOS batch file that just launches teh .msi file. You can right-click on the .bat file and Run As Administrator. You MUST launch the install using Run As Adminsitrator under Vista or it will not work. It may appear to work, but it will not.

No luck....I uninstalled everything, including SNP, then went through the steps you detailed.  Still get the ASCOM Celestron Driver notice that the ASCOM 5.0a is not installed.  Thus far, that seems to be the problem.

Here’s another tip: instead of uninstalling everything one-by-one – use System Restore to roll back many installations all at once.

I appreciate that this problem likely reflects my lack of
understanding................

I have installed the HelperNet addon and think it may be stopping me running my
system the way I want. I use Focusmax with distinctly different setups
(different focusers and parameters). Rather than change settings each time I
have a list of reg files that I load so that the registry is updated to my
profile.

HelperNet seems to store things differently (I am running Windows7). So...

1) Am I corect in thinking information/parameters is stored differently?
2) If so is there any way to achieve what I want with HelperNet?

Thanks

Yes. the data is now stored in xml format files called profile.xml
They are in a folder structure from C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\ASCOM\Profile

A bit of renaming and/or copying the profile.xml files should do the same sort
of thing.

Try with UAC turned off.
Though UAC has improved, and is not quite as much of a problem as when
Vista was 'young', there are still cases, where it will 'silently' block
things. Fortunately, once you have completed the install, with it off,
you can then turn it back on (it does improve security), and the changes
made with it off are remembered. If having problems with a package
install in Vista, I'd always suggest trying this as a last resort.
It is meant to tell you when it blocks things, but for some
'unexplained' reason, it doesn't always do this....
There is also a hidden 'higher' security level than administrator in
Vista. If you right click on a file, and select 'run as administrator',
when you are already logged in as an administator, you get to the
'system' administrator level, which can do some things still blocked to
the administrator. It think this was done because of the tendency for
people to run as administrator all of the time....

Best Wishes

Hi

I'm new here and may as well start with a problem.

My Lx200 handpad says ver 2.50 when I start up.

I've downloaded the latest ascom as well as the Meade classic lx200 drivers and
can't get any software to work with it. I realize my LX200 is old but is it too
old for Ascom. Is there a spot to download much older versions of Ascom as well
as LX200 drivers in case that would work?

Using the POT handpad control and choosing Meade Classic LX200 i can move the
scope with the handpad software but then trying the same setup with anything
else like PHD Guiding or Cartes I get nothing or error messages.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Tom

Thanks for the suggestion - I've had UAC turned off, and used "Run as administrator", all with no luck.  I'm just about to reinstall Vista to see if a "clean install" helps.  The only reason I have the notebook PC is to run the scope, so there's "little loss" to me except the time it takes.

Next step is to go buy another WinXP copy, since it works on hte desktop PC with that OS.

Cheers, and thanks!

Joe

I'm not sure how much more specific I can be - it said the error was a 2869.  A screen shot would show you exactly the same thing.

On a hunch, did you install Microsoft dot net framework....BEFORE attempting to install ASCOM?

It might help.

The main question is, what is “it”? Error 2869 is meaningless unless you know where it comes from.

OK, as it is easier for you to argue with me that to take a screen shot, there is just one more thing I’d like to take a stab at. I’m sending you a slightly-modified msi file by private email. Please use System Restore to roll back to the point before you first attempted to install ASCOM Platform 5.0a. Then unzip my version of the installer and verify you have the correct file based on the modified date being today (9/04/2009 12:35). Then go ahead and install it. You’ll get some errors relating to the Rotator Simulator and being unable to add its AppId – this is a known problem in 5.0a/Vista but doesn’t affect your ability to use ASCOM applications. I’ve just run this installer on my Windows 7 system and it runs to completion.

Hi Bill,

No - I didn't check to ensure that it was installed, .  I had a fresh copy of Vista installed with a bare hard drive and it connected to the internet to download all the latest updates before I installed the new programs, but I didn't ensure Microsoft dot Net was there.   I'll go back to square one and give it a shot - thanks for the tip!

Hi Tim,

My apologies for sounding less than appreciative.  That was not my intent.  I had already gone back to square one to try to reinstall everything by removing all the programs, and there was no opportunity to take a screen shot to provide you since I couldn't recreate the fault.  I should have explained better that I was going from memory.  Obviously, there are more than one ASCOM installers involved.

Thanks in advance for the new installer - I'll do that today.  Another option I will try if the system restore approach doesn't work, is to reinstall Vista so I once again have a "blank slate" to work with.

Cheers,

Joe

Thanks in advance for the new installer - I'll do that today.  Another option I will try if the system restore approach doesn't work, is to reinstall Vista so I once again have a "blank slate" to work with.

OK:

1. Write something in VBScript to slew the scope.
2. Write a program that can communicate across a network and make so it will run
the script on the remote computer. I have Apache w/ PHP, MySQL, and ASCOM on the
same computer. If this is not possible, then please say so, otherwise see if you
can do it. I tried with PHP, and got it working for a little while but it had
problems, and I forgot to release it after I got the cords so you could only
shut it down by restarting the computer. It did restart properly, I didn't have
to kill it (i.e. Unplug it!).

Make so it updates every couple seconds. I understand JavaScript well enough

I'm unclear on your actual goal here, or how it relates to ASCOM. This sort
of communication scheme (if somehow implemented with an ASCOM front end on a
Windows machine) is very limited. For instance, you could never manage
guiding a mount through such an interface, and most applications depend on
guiding.

Does anyone know how to get the SkyTracker drive, with the SkyCommander setting
circles, to work with the ASCOM interface?

I see that there is a driver for the Sky Commander setting circles available,
but I do not see a driver for the Sky Tracker stepper motor GOTO drive system.

Back in 2008, Kenneth Coates was on this forum and he was writing a driver for
this. But I can not find where, or if, he finished it.

I can't find anyone, in any forum any where, that has been successful in getting
the StarMaster telescopes (SkyTracker drive) to work with any Planetarium
Software.

Any information on this is appreciated.

I think you’ll find that the installer has a dependency on the .NET Framework and will not even launch if the framework is not present. The installer would display a dialog and would make it very clear if that were the case. So I very much doubt that this is the cause of the reported error message.
