Subject: USB configure setting?

Hello group,

I just installed my usb serial connctor and undated the drivers for
it in my Windows 98 2nd ed. Compaq Pesario / Athlon processor.

I verified in the device manager that the usb port was working
properly.

I fired up Starry Night Pro, and went to telescope configure to
connect to my LX200 classic. When I hit configure, then properties,
all get is a drop down of com ports 1-8 , not any listings for usb
ports. I still cannot get it to recognize the scope being powered up
and connected even via the usb port. Maybe the cable from the scope
is bad?
Am I missing the obvious? Is there something I need to change in the
settings to get the scope to connect via the usb port connection
instead of the serial port?

I have down loaded the latest ASCOM platform 3.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to go into your hardware properties and see
what port your PC is assigned to the USB adapter. On
mine, it is port 4. Also, I believe that the ASCOM
driver states that you must have XP with at least the
first service pack installed. I don't know if it
works with Win98.

Anyone have anymore ideas about the problem I'm
having?

It is in the files area of this group. It should be installed on top
of V3, that is, don't uninstall the V3 installation before installing
this.

Just to eliminate possibilities, where are you? If your location uses
a comma as a decimal separator then this causes problems.

What about the tests I suggested to see what is happening with
reading the scope position?

Basically, try to connect and check that the scope position in SNP is
the same as the scope position as shown on the HC and that if you
slew to a different object using the HC the position as shown in SNP
also changes.

You can do this indoors, with a quick align of course. just make sure
the scope is aligned before connecting.

More thinks to try:
Try a different program, such as Mike Swanson's NSOL. This is simpler
and doesn't use ASCOM. This will show if the scope can be connected
to and can read and set the position.

Try using ASCOM with a different planetarium program, such as Cartes
du Ceil (CDC) this is a very good freeware program that also uses
ASCOM and connects very reliably.

Once we have a pattern of what works, what doesn't and exactly what
happens when things don't work then we should be able to find out
what is going wrong with your system.

There is no fundamental problem with the driver, and other people
have successfully controlled NS11s using this driver, some even with
SNP, although it does seem that the majority of the problems we see
are with SNP. This is why we are so keep that you have the very
latest version of SNP, including any web updates.

The ASCOM Platform is compatible with Win98, WinMe, Win2000 and WinXP. For
98, it installs a rather large set of Microsoft supplied patches to the
object system (COM). The warning message about XP service pack is for the
first service pack that had some critical fixes to the object system.

In your case, if using a USB-serial adapter, try changing the port number
assigned by the system.
I have seen an 'oddity' with some W98/W2K/XP systems using USB-RS232
interfaces, where the system assigns (say) COM4, and the port at this
address, works OK with some software, but not other packages. However if you
then manually set the port to COM5 (say), it then works properly. Setting it
manually back to the originally selected port then works as well!. It
appears that some of the USB interfaces report as being on COM4, and work
with software that accesses them through the Windows API, but not for
packages that try to access the hardware addresses. Manually overriding the
settings, then cures the problem and brings the emulation 'in line' with the
addresses being reported...

As said above, look in device manager, and record the serial port number
reported for the USB-serial adapter. Then use this.

Hi, new to the group..and need some help

I have an ETX90AC with 505 cable etc all connected up to Starry
Night Pro, which works fine. I also have a Celestar 8 which I am
just about to add an NGC SKy Vector to, (the optics are great so I
decided to just add some computerisation to that), and have ordered
the serial cable for this as well.

Just want to check that it will work with SN Pro? I have David EKS
DSC ASCOM driver, which I hope will work, but welcome any other
suggestions on how best to make this all communicate. The DSC will
be connected via a Belkin USB to serial adapter as my laptop has no
serial ports.

Many thanks

Has anyone encountered driver incompatibility issues with Edgeport USB to
serial converters? A user has reported that my Temma driver will link using
the Edgeport but doesn't behave properly (wrong positions reported, erratic
slews). However, all is well when he uses a Belkin converter. The Temma
requires some non-standard port settings (19200,E,8,1, and handshaking), so
I guess this could be at the heart of the matter?

Thanks,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I have run into some issues with older versions of the Edgeport/4.
Sometimes, enabling the "fast write" flag in the Edgeport configuration
utility may resolve this issue. I would also make sure your customer has
the latest driver for the EP. Lastly, resetting the COM Name Arbiter in the
registry can sometimes solve persistent problems.

Would you post that procedure somewhere and tell us when it's appropriate?
I havenn't been able to get any USB to serial adaptor to work.

Hello,

Anyone got any suggestions on what the best way in VB 6 is to
determine if someone has the ASCOM platform installed ?

I guess if its not then something like

Set m_Util = New DriverHelper.Util

is going to throw an error becuase the object DriverHelper.Util will
not be found.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Best Regards
Chris

That should work. Looking for the Chooser would also work.

Another way would be to look for the ASCOM registry entry,
HKLM\Software\ASCOM.

It may be more difficult to determine what version of ASCOM is
installed, perhaps checking the version of DriverHelper.Util or
DriverHelper.Chooser would do the trick.

The best way I've found so far, is to use the PC card slots with a
Socket communications serial card. They make ruggedized versions in
2 and 4 port versions, non-ruggedized in 1,2,4. Since they are
effectively true serial ports, I haven't yet found software that
doesn't like them.

The only USB I've gotten to work with "Most" software (I"m the one
chuck is working with for his software) is the latest edgeports, but
as Chuck and I found out, even the edgeport isn't a guarantee.
OTOH, my Socket PC card worked with everything, so I'm using USB
only for mice and Bluetooth and printers. The fast write option
indicated below no longer is an option under current xp drivers.

Friends, this is my first day here and I have a problem. . .I have
searched the messages of this group, but I can't get it right
yet. . .I've recently got a new laptop. . .(Gateway fast with
whistles and bells . . .I don't know much else about laptops) but I
cannot get it to work for HNsky software and my LX200 classic. . .I
use ASCOM or DDE, (which worked well before with my antique laptop
which I gave away) . . .I don't have a serial port on the new
computer (I think that's what it's called right?) I only have a bunch
of buses and USB ports. . .anyway, the LX200 has the RS232 jack and
there is a similar jack on the computer back. . .there are 8
different settings on the ASCOM software preferences setup and I've
gone thru all of them. . .only port 3 gives me a hint the computer is
trying to talk to the scope and the error message:"Invalid procedure
call or argument" appears. Now, is there a simple download or some
configuration or is there some simple way to connect the out jacks of
USBs/Busses etc. to the RS232 of the LX200. . .or is this more
difficult? . . .(Incidently, I'm asking the folks at the HNSky group
the same questions today) Thanks again,
John

What you need is a USB-to-Serial converter. One I recommend (and use
myself) that seems to get consistently good reviews:
http://iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&product_id=154

The RJ11 socket on the back of your computer is probably a modem - DO
NOT connect your LX-200 there or something might go fizzly-fizzly-pop!.
The device recommended above will do the trick. The IOGear serial
adapter usually installs on COM6 by default but not always.

Tim, thanks for the advice/help. . .that sounds like the

200. . .no smoke etc. etc. Lucky I guess. . .thanks again,
John

What you need is a USB-to-Serial converter. One I recommend (and use
myself) that seems to get consistently good reviews:
http://iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&product_id=154

The RJ11 socket on the back of your computer is probably a modem - DO
NOT connect your LX-200 there or something might go fizzly-fizzly-
pop!.
The device recommended above will do the trick. The IOGear serial
adapter usually installs on COM6 by default but not always.

Hopefully someone can help me here. When I attempt to open the
control panel to the AP GTO telescope driver I get a subscript out
of range (-13) error. I am connecting from MaximDL 4.01. This only
occurs when I actually connect to the telescope if I unplug the
cable from the telescope I don't get the error. Maxim DL will allow
me to connect from the telescope control tab but I am not able sync
to the telescope. When I attempt to sync I get a invalid format for
RA/DEC error

Details

Dell 5150 laptop
QuaTech USB-Serial Port converter
Connecting on COM3
AP1200 latest version control software
Win XP Pro - latest patches installed - never connectted to the net
MaximDL 4.01
Latest ASCOM Platform

What I have tried

-Rebooting
-Reinstalling the Ascom Platform
-Both ports of the AP mount
-A win98 laptop (it works)
-Registry Settings look ok - they don't look truncated or garbaged up
-I killed everything but MaximDL - I was connected to the camera
(parallel) and the mount. At one point I even killed the connection
to the camera and it didn't make any difference.

Any ideas

Scott,

Have you ever connected to the driver successfully (i.e. with an older version of MaxIm DL).  What version of the telescope ROM are you using?

I have not successfully connected with this laptop as it is brand

connect and I could connect when I was having these errors. I'm
running the latest AP keypad software 4.07 and I have the most recent

of me. I plan to try a different cable this evening between the
laptop and usb/serial port hub to eliminate that as a problem. Is
there anything that I can do to help debug this ?

The subscript errors seems to be coming from the driver.
STR to get the error

-Open MaxIm DL
-Click on the Telescope Control
-Click on the Option Tab under the telescope tab
-At this point it pops open the telescope control window with your
name on it <G> and the error is thrown.

I've had very good luck and performance from this quatech unit over
the last year. It's dependable, the company is not a household name
they are more of an industrial process control supplier for this
stuff (e.g it wasn't cheap). It's possible it could be this unit
though I'll see if I can borrow someone elses usb-serial port and see
if it works. Something is obviously getting mangled somewhere.

Hi Ajai,

as I have heared you have written the code for the AP mounts. I have
the problem that when I try to store my location dates in the
computer ( N 53 33.5 E 10 53.10) and store the I get the mesage, that
the dates will be saved on local Machine. But when I open the
Properties again al get the dates S 53 33.5 and W 10 53.10. What I am
doing wrong?

I appear to have this at least partially working now. I punted last
night and reformatted the hard drive - resintalled everything - used
brand new out of the package USB and Serial cables, etc. I did retry
the old cables after I had it working and they worked fine. I still
have a problem with Maxim DL syncing with the mount but this occurs
with both the AP driver and the Telescope Simulator so I suspect
something else is amiss there but I'll toss that onto the Maxim DL
list.

Feature Request

Ajai could you add an E/W/N/S nudge button to your telescope
window ? It doesn't need to be sophisticated just a simple way to
help verify connectivity.

Glad it’s all working Scott because I could not repro any error.  I will add the nudge buttons to the feature request list for V2.0.  My only concern is screen real estate for lower resolution monitors.

Hi All,
I have ETX105 from Meade with Autostar 2. I am planning to implement a
JAVA code(using JNI) for the LX200 protocol. I just wanted to know if
somebody has done this before and could lend me his/her help?
Thanks.

Well if you want to reinvent the wheel...

Why not just use the existing ASCOM Meade driver?

Because a proficient Java developer will use Java as
first choice and may not know C or may not be willing
to learn another technology, if things can be
implemented easily and faster in Java. The same
applies back versa for C developers.

I think the intent of the question was "why code anything?" since the ASCOM
driver is already done, it works well, and it's free. A truly proficient
developer in any language will take advantage of an existing library. If
somebody wants to write a telescope controller in Java, that's fine. But
they can implement the high level interface in Java and simply access the
ASCOM driver, and in that way not have to worry about the LX protocol at all
(and as an added benefit, their app will likely be compatible with other
telescopes as well).

This comment applies to someone with the primary goal of building a tool. If
the goal is personal entertainment or education, of course, there is nothing
at all wrong with re-inventing the wheel.

Chris,
ASCOM driver is is Windows oriented, right. There is
nothing wrong with ASCOM driver, although it for home
users or internal networks.

Business systems manage equipment rather via *nix. In
the network installation there is a wide range of
OSes, which can run Java-based software.

I hope to start a commercial system later this year. I
will use Java for LX protocol. I will be glad if you
can provide a "how to" for faster and easier LX driver
development.
