Hmmm. Kirby’s kind of artsy like a Birkenstock wearing Mac-addict.  Probably using some kind of iTunes proprietary color scheme.

How about you hit yours this week then I’ll get it from you Sat (golf) and do mine?

Maybe it really is magenta, and you need to calibrate your iPad?!?

Hmmm that sounds good in theory but the problem is I will not be golfing on Saturday. Some inconsiderate friends decided I should be at there wedding next Saturday instead of golfing. Yes I know that is a poor excuse but my wife thinks I should be at the wedding too and she trumps golf so I guess I will be at a wedding. But perhaps I can try to calibrate my iPad at the wedding and make it a useful afternoon.

I also won't be golfing on Saturday.  Mac's  Mayfield graduation and shindig is this weekend.

In other news, I don't see a magenta tint to Kirbini's image.  The detail in the galaxy almost looks likes it's embossed.  Pretty Cool!

I thought the bright red star (with significant red surrounding it) was just a bit on the magenta side.  I agree about the galaxy.  It does look 3-D.

I should be able to play on Saturday.  Knee and (especially) back were really bothering me much of the 2nd nine yesterday.  Made some good pitches and putts, and was playing pretty well (for me) until the final four holes.  Will get back worked on this week.

Here's the result of my final night at TSP - the amazing 2012 Lyrid
Meteor Shower. Was supposed to be 10-20 per hour. I figured if I
could catch 3-5 per hour, I'd get a nice radiant pattern over the
course of 3-4 hours. I caught one in 90 minutes, then said, "screw
this." One minute, ISO 6400 images @ f/4 using a 15mm lens. Big
Dipper (upper left) will help you orient yourself.

Is that Vega and Lyra low in the middle of the horizon?  Maybe you gave up too early.

But as hard as I've tried, your getting one is pretty good.

Yeah, they're still fairly low in that image.  That was the 13th shot in the series; I imaged for another hour+ without a single capture.  I was never going to stay up really late since I was due in town for a beer tasting at 2 pm.  I would have stayed up longer if I'd seen at least a couple more meteors.  One just wasn't enough to keep me up for another 2-3 hours.  Will try again during a more active shower.

I sold the GM-8 and he picked it up today so I have two servo motors.  I am keeping one for a spare for the G11 and the other one is for sale.  If you would like to have a back-up this is a chance to get one.  175.00 includes the gearbox.  They have had very little use.  I bought them new when I got the newer version Gemini console with the Din connecters.  They had more use at the TSP this year than all the time that went before.  Probably less than 50 hours on them.

That's pretty interesting Kirby.  I was wondering about the reflection nebulosity around the bright star.  Looks like the star is 5 Serpentis.  At Mag 5 is really bright in your image.  Is the glow at the bottom center amp glow?  And this one looks pretty magenta to me.

Nice job of resolving the stars in the glob!

The glow at the left hand corner I cannot figure out.  I toned it down and did not get rid of it completely and I don’t think it is amp glow – that is fairly simple to remove.  I had very little problem with amp glow on any of the other images that week.

I just do not see the magenta and it does not show up on my wife’s Mac either.

On my Mac, the stars in the outer halo of M5 are magenta. In the lower left corner there is a bright star right at the edge.  That has a magenta glow around it,  but the bright star to the right and below that one has a distinct purple glow around it.  And there is a glow (dome) right in the middle at the bottom of the image.

Hello Folks,
There was a nice break in the overcast last night here in Las Cruces, which allowed for a few hours imaging on M13. Here are two versions, wtih the color processed slightly different using the same data. I would be interested in which one you visually prefer. Here is the link:

I used my TMB 6" APO with an STL6303 and AP guidescope using an ST402.  Exposures were 12 x 300 seconds each RGB, no luminance.  I hope you enjoy the image result.

By the way...   My 24" RC project is coming along nicely.  The OTA is completed and I am working on finalizing the Fork Mount assembly.  I hope to have this scope completed and installed up at our Mayhill observatory sometime this Fall.
Clear Skies,
Mike Sherick

Mike,

Very nice!  I think I prefer the one on the right.  I get the sense that the core is better resolved with that one.  The one on the left looks more "stretched" to me.  But glob stars are supposed to be older, and the one on the left there is less blue, which is what I would expect.

So for color I like the one on the left, for detail I like the one on the right.

  How's that for commitment?

Steve

Hey everyone, I have been away from the group for about a year now that I have moved to northern CA (although I still read all the emails).  However I am wanting to get back into astrophotography again and it is time to unpack the telescope and all the gear.  I do miss the dark skies of New Mexico, but Yosemite is less than a 2 hour drive so I plan on taking several trips there this summer.  I’m going to start out slow with wide field and star trails but want to get back to using my 8” reflector for some deep space items soon.

I have a couple questions for you as I have been away from it for quite some time.  I currently have ImagesPlus 3.80a camera control and 3.83 Image Processing.  I noticed that the current version is 4.5 and about an $80 upgrade.  Are there huge improvements that make this a “must have” update or will my older version be fine?  I am using a Canon T1i and 7D and I believe my older version works with both of these cameras.

I also have Gradient XTerminator which works fine with CS5 as well as a few other Photoshop plugins such as Annies Astro Actions and Carboni Tools.  I played around with these in the past and will have to relearn them all again.

I guess what I really need to do is just get out there and take some shots and post them here for you guys to help me any problems that I experience.

Thanks everyone and I hope to share some photos soon….

As long as your T1i will work with IP I don’t see any reason to upgrade.  Another camera control program I use and like is Backyard EOS.

The only plug-in I would suggest you add is Noise Ninja.

What kind of mount is it?  They are using a different way of specifying fractional guiding rates.

Normal tracking (sidereal rate) is 15 arcsec/sec.  So 2x sidereal would move 15 arcsec/secs when guiding.  Most mounts (Losmandy) call this 1X rate.  Where you have 2X, 1.75X, 1.5X, and 1.25X, my mount calls these 1X, .75X, .5X, and .25X.

You'll want to use the lowest number you can that gives you good corrections.  Using less than 2X ensures that you don't suffer from gear backlash when guiding corrections are made in opposite directions.

1.25X is good when pointing towards the pole, where smaller corrections are needed in RA.  1.75X is better near the equator where you need to make larger movements.

I would suggest you start with 1.5X and make adjustments as needed.

Steve

Hello Folks,

Thanks again for the comments on the M13 RGB image, as it helped with my color processing efforts.

Here are a couple of new images done over the last couple of days here in Las Cruces, NM, from our Sagrada Observatory.
M5 was imaged Luminance 75 x 300 seconds, and 25 x 300 seconds each RGB.  M92 was a straight RGB with the same sequence.  This evening I am imaging the Luminance for the M13 data and will reprocess it soon.  I expect it will help to reveal more detail for this object.  Anyway, I hope you enjoy the image results.

By the way -- The solar eclipse this evening was spectacular from our location here in southern New Mexico.  We viewed it with a simple projection method.  The setting sun was quite unusual as it dropped behind the mountains - showing two ears, as it were, before it moved out of sight.  I'm sure there will be some nice photos of this event over the next day or so.

Clear Skies,
Mike Sherick
