I have been a member of this division, mainly a dormant one, for about one year.
My academic and professional backgrounds are law, economics, finance and public
administration. I have for some fifteen years been doing a lot of writing as a
legal assistant/expert, consultant, translator (English>French) and writer on
legal issues of public affairs. I want to improve my literary skills but don't
know how to proceed. I need advice from experts on how to enhance my knowledge
of writing so I can edit my research scripts and translations. Any volunteers? I
could reciprocate with some of my skills.

Hi all!

I'm ATA Certified in the Eng>Spa pair, I'm Chilean and I live in Chile. I've
been a technical translator for 19 years now, and now I really want to go into
literary translation, so I've joined this Division and list. :)

I have a degree in Translation by a local University and was hoping to find a
post-graduate course online on Lit Trans, but no results so far. I hope that
somehow I'll learn my way into this field. Being here with you all is a first
step! Now I'll continue reading the olds posts...

I am trying to get translation rights for a book (not exactly literary, more a
memoir--non-fiction, but literary in its character), from the author. He has the
legal rights, and seems to be willing, so now I need to pull together a
contract. But I don't know what it should say, including the financial aspect! I
know the PEN translators handbook has a model contract for translator-publisher
deals, but that is a step quite far down the line from where I am right now.

I know we're not permitted to discuss rates specifically. But if my normal rate
is $.XX per word, how should I think about translating this into a rate for
translating a book? Would I put anything about that into the contract for
translation rights? I know that literary translations, especially by newbies,
are poorly paid. I am not expecting to get rich, but I would like to make enough
to justify taking the time away from my regular translation work.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

in this genre as well as interested screenwriters, scholars, and members of the
