In an online CV you need to add different keywords from the start to the end.
This is because when you add your CV to a job search engine, recruiters normally
type in keywords to choose the candidate. Also try to list your major skills in
the beginning of the CV so it would get noticed. Simple words like excellent,
experienced, fast, skilled etc give extra spices to even boring CV so use them
wisely.

Simulation with EViews
and TSP

On this page you will find documents and files dealing with the use EViews and TSP to run simulations. We will also look in detail at three early MacroEconometic models. Specifically we will look at models developed by Jan Tinbergen, Trevor Swan and Lawrence Klein. We will also look at a rather odd model of the Australian economy by Kmenta. For each model you will be able to read and download text documents describing the model as well as EViews and/or TSP files which will allow you to conduct simulation experiments with it.

Since some visitors to this site may either never have heard about the great Australian economist Trevor Swan or, if they have heard of him, are aware only of his writings on neoclassical growth theory, we begin with a brief biography and some details of his macroeconometric model of the Australian economy which he developed over the period 1943-45. Because we will begin with Swan's model two documents have been created to teach you about the use of EViews and TSP using his model as an example.

1. Trevor Swan's Macroeconometric Model of the Australian Economy in the Great Depression

Trevor Swan was born in Sydney in 1918. In 1939 he obtained a first class honours degree from the University of Sydney where he had been a part-time student. From then until 1950 he worked as an economist in various (Australian) government departments culminating in the position of Chief Economist in the Prime Minister's Department under Robert Menzies. Between 1943 and 1945, while working at the Departments of War Organisation of Industry and Post-War Reconstruction, he built a ten-equation quarterly model of the Australian economy, one of the first macroeconometric models ever constructed. In 1950 he was appointed the foundation Professor of Economics at the Australian National University. In 1955 he developed a model of internal and external balance. This paper was not published until 1963. In 1956 he published a paper in the Economic Record in which he presented a neoclassical model of economic growth which he had developed independently of Robert Solow. In recognition of Swan's achievement the neoclassical (exogenous) growth model is often referred to as the "Solow-Swan Model". In 1960 he developed 'the golden-rule' in an unpublished paper, independently of Phelps and others. He retired from the ANU in 1983. In 1987 Trevor Swan was made a Distinguished Fellow by the Economic Society of Australia and, in 1988 he was installed as an Officer of the Order of Australia. (An obituary article may be found in the December 1989 issue of the Economic Record.

Swan's model of the Australian economy over the period 1929:3 -1939:2 is described in a 3 page document. We suggest you read this before proceeding any further. The model has five equations. The endogenous variables are: consumption expenditure, investment, imports, national income and employment. The paper given here is a summary of T. Swan, "The Principle of Effective Demand: A 'Real Life' Model", Economic Record, 1989, pp 378-98.

A description of the use of EViews to simulate economic models is given in the 6 page document titled Simulation with EViews: Swan's Model . This goes through EViews commands and the procedure to be followed when constructing and running a simulation workfile. It uses Swan's model as an example. You can download the Eviews Workfile for Swan's Model and run it using your copy of EViews.

The 9-page document titled An Introduction to Computer Simulation Using TSP on a PC shows you how to construct a TSP file to simulate an economic model. A description of the use of TSP to simulate economic models using Swan's model as an example is given in the 3 page document titled Simulating a TSP Version of Swan's Model . You can download the TSP Input file for Swan's Model and run it using your copy of TSP.

Both the EViews and TSP files allow you to conduct an historical simulation and to generate simulated values for aggregate employment over the period 1929-39 and to compare the simulated values with the actual values of aggregate employment over the period.

We have various Measures of Tracking Performance to enable us to assess the 'goodness of fit' of models. You can compute one or more of these measures using the results from your EViews or TSP historical simulations.

We may conduct interesting simulation experiments with the model. Like Tinbergen's 1936 model, Swan's model was set up to consider Australian macroeconomic policy in the context of the Great Depression.

A document describing these policy shocks and how to incorporate them into the EViews file can be viewed/downloaded from here . A TSP version is available here .

2. Jan Tinbergen's Macroeconometric Model of the Netherlands Economy in the Great Depression

This is Tinbergen's justly famous model of the Dutch Economy over the period 1924 - 1934. This model has thirty-four equations. It is described in J Tinbergen, 'An Economic Policy for 1936' in L Klaasen et al (eds), Jan Tinbergen: Selected Papers, 1959, pp 37-84 and in G Dhaene and A Barten, "Where it All Began: The 1936 Tinbergen Model Revisited", Economic Modelling, 1989, pp 203-219.

A description of Tinbergen's 1936 model of the Netherland's economy is given in the 5-page document titled In the beginning: Tinbergen's 1936 Model of the Dutch Economy - A TSP Version which also explains how the model can be set up as a TSP file. You can download the TSP Input file for Tinbergen's Model and run it using your copy of TSP.

A description of the use of EViews to simulate Tinbergen's model is given in the 5-page document titled In the beginning: Tinbergen's 1936 Model of the Dutch Economy - An EViews Version. You can download the Eviews Workfile for Tinbergen's Model and run it using your copy of EViews.

Both the EViews and TSP files allow you to conduct historical simulations and to generate simulated values for aggregate output (amongst other variables) over the period 1924-33 and to compare the simulated values with the actual values of aggregate output over the period.

3. Lawrence Klein's Macroeconometric Model of the US Economy in the Great Depression

This simulates a small model of the US economy over the period 1921 - 1941. Klein's model has seven equations. The endogenous variables are: consumption expenditure, investment, private sector wage bill, private sector output, profits, the capital stock and GNP. It is described as Model I in L Klein, Economic Fluctuations in the United States 1921-1941, John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1950.

A description of the use of EViews to simulate Klein's model is given in the 4-page document titled Simulating Klein's Model I using EViews . You can download the Eviews Workfile for Klein's Model and run it using your copy of EViews.

A description of the use of TSP to simulate Klein's model as an example is given in the 4-page document titled Simulating Klein's Model I using TSP . You can download the TSP Input file for Klein's Model and run it using your copy of TSP.

Both the EViews and TSP files allow you to conduct an historical simulation and to generate simulated values for GNP over the period 1921-41 and to compare the simulated values with the actual values of GNP over the period. You can also introduce a shock to government expenditure and compute the size of the short and long run government expenditure multipliers.

4. Klein and Goldberger's Macroeconometric Model of the US Economy in the Great Depression

This simulates a relatively large model of the U.S. economy over the period 1929 -1941. The model has thirty equations (sixteen of which are identities). It is described in L Klein and A Goldberger, An Econometric Model of the United States, North Holland, 1955.

A description of the model and the use of EViews to simulate the Klein-Goldberger model is given in the 6-page document titled Simulation of the Klein-Goldberger Model using EViews . You can download the Eviews Workfile for the Klein-Goldberger Model and run it using your copy of EViews.

A description of the model and of the use of TSP to simulate economic models using the Klein-Goldberger model is given in the 6-page document titled Simulation of the Klein-Goldberger Model using TSP . You can download the TSP Input file for the Klein-Goldberger Model and run it using your copy of TSP.

Both the EViews and TSP files allow you to conduct an historical simulation and to generate simulated values for aggregate employment (and other variables) over the period 1921-41 and to compare the simulated values with the actual values of aggregate employment over the period.

5. Kmenta's model of the impact of immigration on the Australian economy

This model simulates the Australian economy over the period 1948 - 1961. It has fourteen equations. The endogenous variables include: consumption expenditure, expenditure on motor vehicles, business fixed investment, housing investment, non-farm employment, imports, investment in non-farm stocks, company income, farm income, non-farm personal disposable income, non-farm personal income and GNP. It is described in J. Kmenta, "An Econometric Model of Australia: 1948-61" Australian Economic Papers, 1966, pp 131-164. Kmenta constructed the model in order to examine the impact of the massive post WW2 immigration program on the Australian economy. His model, however, gives very odd results. In considering why this is, a very important lesson is learnt.

A description of the use of EViews to simulate Kmenta's model is given in the 5-page document titled Kmenta's Model of the Australian Economy: An EViews version . You can download the Eviews Workfile for Kmenta's model and run it using your copy of EViews.

A description of the use of TSP to simulate Kmenta's model is given in the 5-page document titled Kmenta's Model of the Australian Economy: A TSP version . You can download the TSP Input file for the Kmenta's model and run it using your copy of TSP.

Both the EViews and the TSP files allow you to conduct an historical simulation and to generate simulated values for variables such as GNP for different levels of immigration. Oddly, given that the model sees GNP as determined by Aggregate Demand alone, his model suggests that immigration had the effect of lowering, not raising, GNP.
