Here here,
Thanks David.
Regards,

Program worked a treat David.
Formed a 109 MB image which was viewed perfectly in HRPT Reader.
Once the 5 stations are up and running it will be superb.
Thanks for another program written, ready and working for the first
image.....quite an achievement.
Regards
Douglas.

Look for the data some minutes after NOAA17 and NOAA18
passes over the EARS HRPT station (in the Canaries).
The file names are expected to resemble:
avhrr_20060215_025100_noaa18.hrp.bz2
and they should be 1 - 2MB in size. The AVHRR manager
should decompress the bzip data, assemble the segments
into a composite whole, and save the composite file in
a format which the current beta of the HRPT Reader can
understand. If we get that far, I will be pleased,
and I can look at refining the AVHRR Manager to suit
users' needs.

Hi David,
many congratulations - AVHRR manager has worked just
fine for me on this first NOAA 17 trial and the
composite file was read without any problems by HRPT
Reader.
Very many thanks & congratulations as well, of course,
to Eumetsat for making this data available. Truly
great stuff!
One small point I noticed in AVHRR manager is that the
"map" did not seem to be redrawn after the image was
decoded and the received files then "deleted"
(actually moved by hand). But, it's early days and
more experimentation is required to be sure.
thanks & regards
Nigel

Thanks, Ferdinand.
There is a V1.2.0.16 update, which I hope corrects this issue, now on the
Web site. I anticipate a number of minor updates as we start to receive
the data.

David,
I noticed that when I want to set the AVHRR manger to pick up files from the
network it does not show the network in the tree. It does show "shared
documents" but not my receiving PC. As all other programs do not show this
behaviour I assume it to be an aspect of the AVHRR Manager that needs
attention.

(14th) over Eumetcast. Could someone tell what the file names will
look like, as they come into the "T-Systems/BusinessTV-IP/received"

Having now tried out the NOAA CLASS site with David's excellent HRPT
reader I thought it would be an interesting experiment to compare a
Meteosat 8 HRV image with a LAC HRPT one. So I ordered up a few segments
around the famous 'kite' of the Nile delta and put the two alongside
each other. Then did a screen capture and snipped it down to size and
with 20% jpeg compression it's just a 100k.
If you would like to have a look:
http://www.meteosat.freeserve.co.uk/Image1.jpg
HRV doesn't come off too badly, specially considering a sandstorm veil
was beginning to approach the area. The Nile was roughly at the
mid-point for the LAC image so it was at maximum resolution from the
satellite sub-point. You can see the different look angle from M8.
As I say, nothing very scientific, just an experiment to familiarise
myself with the workings of HRPT specially in readiness for the good
things to come!
Cheers

Not sure whether to post here or Satsignal.
I would like to update keps automatically, I see from the readme, that
this can be done via a batch file.
I have no experiance with these, can you suggest anywhere that i can
see an example of batches etc, or indeed send me a sample batch file?
Many thanks

Peter I don't think you need to request anything. My understanding is that
there will be some live tests (not for us) during the first quarter and a
trial service (for those registered with EARS) sometime during the 2nd
quarter of the year, so it is still a bit away yet.
The data sent recently was sent in error.
Still probably no harm in asking just to be sure. OPS are always very
helpful.

Douglas.

What must I request from Ops ?

Many thanks Douglas.
Here's another two - but do they belong in Satsignal as they are
software related I wonder?
One question I am wondering about is - on the excellent HRPT reader
options to change gamma seem to only work for me with the False Colour
tab - perhaps this is intentional?
Would registering the copy give me in-built geometric correction or is
that only available with the BMP prog?
Cheers

David,
I was nearly there! Many thanks for the line-by-line
breakdown on updating via Kepler Manager. It's just what was needed for
the likes of me. I always just used to download the Celestrack file
manually on a weekly basis; I've been doing that for years!
I look forward to the data transmissions starting in earnest and
reading how everyone is using same. Ops have acknowledged my request for
the data and have advised me that the eToken will be enabled when
dissemination commences.
The neighbours will be delighted when the dish and az/el rotator is
removed from the roof in the Summer!
Thank you for making yet another aspect of satellite imaging so much
easier.
Best regards, Terence.

Terence,
Please see Help, Index, Kepler data in the HRPT Reader.
The Zip file I sent you contains the "historic" Kepler data for 2005, so
please place the extracted files in:
\HRPT-reader-exe-folder\Keps\Updates\
You can place the unzipped 2004 data from CelesTrak in:
\HRPT-reader-exe-folder\Keps\
The Kepler Manager (included in the WXtrack licence) will keep those
historic Keplers up-to-date. I suggest you schedule a job twice a week to
update your Keplers by scheduling the Kepler Manager.
Scheduling the Kepler Manager (registered version):
Suppose your Kepler Manager lives in the folder C:\Kepler-Manager\, and
the HRPT Reader in C:\HRPT-reader\.
1 - Configure the Kepler manager so that the "Save historic Kepler data to
folder" points to C:\HRPT-reader\Keps\Updates\
2 - Check the boxes of the satellites you want updates for. You can also
add these with the file KeplerManager.ini.
3 - In Windows XP, Start, Control Panel, Scheduled tasks.
4 - Click Add Scheduled Task. Click Next.
5 - Wait while the list of programs is populated. Click Browse.
6 - Locate the file: C:\Kepler-Manager\KeplerManager.exe, and click Open.
7 - Name the task "Update Keplers" or whatever you prefer
8 - Click to perform this task weekly, and press Next
9 - Select a Start time, e.g. 04:07 if your computer is on overnight.
10 - Select the day of the week - e.g. Monday, and press Next
11 - Enter a user name and passowrd to run the task. Press Next.
12 - Check the box to open the "advanced properties" for the task, and
press Finish.
13 - On the Advanced settings dialog, select: Schedule, Show multiple
schedules.
14 - Add a new shcedule for another day - e.g. Thursday.
I find that twice a week is about right, but you can make your own
judgement.
I will see that the above information is added to the Kepler Manager
read-me.
Cheers,
David

02.51 am......and the same for the other 8 file names.

Well now I'm having fun!
I dropped the files into the received folder on the ram drive and the
AVHRR manager promptly took hold of them and processed them into the
MSG-1 AVHRR folder. I then fired up the HRPT reader and lo and behold -
my first images!! So great success and it seems to show that all is
working well.

Hello to the new AVHRR group!
I have downloaded the trial data files of which David advised us, and
AVHRR has succesfully processed them (of course), and the result has
been viewed in HRPT Reader ( with which I had previously experimented
briefly with directly received C/HRPT data ). Thank you David it works
superbly, and I have requested, of Ops, the enablement of trial AVHRR on
my eToken as you suggested.
I have also prepared the Keps\updates directories and down-loaded the
archived element files from Celestrack as recommended in the Help file.
Their archives now go up to 2004, but a special application is required
for anything between 2004 and the current orbital files, if I
understand correctly.
I have used Celestrack's "weather.txt" current file for several years
and, although I find this works directly in WXtrack, the HRPT reader is
asking for the individual "NOAA??.txt" files from the new directories as
the Help file indicates. Does one need to extract each two-line from the
"weather.txt" file, rename it as e.g. "NOAA18.txt" and put it into the
UPDATES directory? Or are there perhaps ready formatted post 2004 and
current individual ".txt" files obtainable elsewhere?
Thanks in anticipation, and regards to all, Terence.

Hi, James.
You should find some compressed files in your TelliCast \received\ folder,
which the AVHRR Manager will process. If you don't have those files, for
a short time there is a copy here:
ftp://ftp.blueyonder.co.uk/store1/incoming/avhrr/
in particular here:
ftp://ftp.blueyonder.co.uk/store1/incoming/avhrr/AVHRR-tests.zip
I think Les Hamilton wrote an article about using the HRPT Reader in one
of the GEO Quarterlies - perhaps someone has the reference.
