Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2007 To Thu, 29 Nov 2007
Venue: Alhamra - Gadaffi Stadium

Festival Area: Camp#3 (Theatre)

The Company Theatre - Numbers in the Dark

The production which has been directed by Atul Kumar labels itself as a ‘theatrical creation, devised and developed by the actors of the play.’ The young actors are skilled but the production as a whole suffers from a dilettante’s approach to lofty subjects such as the scientific and the artistic underpinning for human faculties like memory, existential angst, the irony of honesty and the abuse of human rights. Very soon these concerns are either grossly diluted or appear to be out of context.  (http://www.mumbaitheatreguide.com/dramas/reviews/numbersin_thedark.asp)

WPAF07 - Editta Braun Company - Coppercity 1001

Duration: 08:15 PM To 09:30 PM

Venue: Alhamra - Gadaffi Stadium

Festival Area: Camp#1

Editta Braun Company - Coppercity 1001

Audience: 15 years and above

“Copper City 1001” shows humans, puppets, and masks, screaming in contorted movements, in a last desperate attempt to express themselves, to give a report before the final freeze. The performance appears like a nightmare out of the last story in Sherezade’s 1001 nights and presents itself like a dark poetic parable on the guilt of society.

Editta Braun Company performances are characterized by an expressive style, and are strongly influenced by theatre and performance, with humor and pathos often walking side by side. They are interwoven with elements showing a commitment to social criticism.

Pierrot's Troupe - K.L.Saigal (Ind)

It is a revisit to the aura and era of the great K L Saigal. It is a ‘Faction’--- where ‘facts’ blend with ‘fiction’ to result into a musical drama of a ‘never before’ kind.

2nd Show: 8:20-9:20

WPAF07 - Compagnie Drift - Unkaputtbar

Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2007 To Fri, 30 Nov 2007
Venue: Alhamra - Gadaffi Stadium

Festival Area: Camp#2 (Dance)

Compagnie Drift - Unkaputtbar

“Unkaputtbar” (indestructible) is a dance production full of witty ideas and acrobatic intermezzos about four men traveling together on the wrong track. Imperturbably, they always fall on their feet, yet they never give up. They keep up a sturdy camaraderie amongst themselves that sometimes degenerates into unfriendly scuffles. The performance counters all that is depressed and dejected with its inexhaustible energy and comic moments.

The Zurich based dance company, Compagnie Drift, has performed in 27 countries and staged over 600 performances. They examine subtly and humorously the absurdities of everyday life.

Gauhar said that Shehr-e-Afsos was an attempt to reveal and relive history’s traumas. She said it was an attempt to take the audience on a journey of self-discovery. The voyage begins with Toba Tek Singh, the story by Manto with excerpts of Siayah Hashiaye and Khol Do, and summarises the monumental tragedy that takes place in the Lahore Mental Hospital in 1947.

BrownBread Company - Glad Tidings/Abdullah

Salman Shahid, theatre director and actor (recently in the Bollywood hit Kasbu Express), invited two Pakistan playwrights to give us their unique view of contemporary live. The result is a surprising, entraining and unsettling kaleidoscope of urgent new work inspired by recent events in Pakistan.

Glad Tidings by Bilal Hassan Minto is a taut and heartbreaking vision of one woman’s desperate bid to escape. Bilal Hassan minto is a well known lawyer and film-maker. He teaches at the University at Lahore and is an advocate of the High courts and the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Abdullah by Salman Shahid is a potent and comic exploration of the delicate balance between the wealthy and their servants in a changing political and religious landscape.

Phoenixplayers - Troubadour (India)

“Troubadour” is an original collage voicing the beauty and truth of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi’s stories and verse. It is a celebration of love, transcending time and space with compassion, humor, and insight. It is also a heartfelt tribute to the original storytellers of yore – the ‘Tarabdaars’ who talked, danced, and sang about ‘the Beloved’, inviting the audience to revel in the true abandon of self-discovery.

The Phoenix Players, founded by Salim Ghouse, believes in portraying contemporary interpretations, thereby walking the path of tradition and modernity together. It has always approached theatre with a universal sensibility, making their performances enriching for the performers and audience alike.

WPAF07 - Folk Puppet, Mohammad Ali (Kabeerwala)

Pakistan’s rich heritage of puppetry dates back to the Mughal era when puppeteers regularly entertained at the court of Emperor Akbar, satirizing his lifestyle and those of his courtiers.

The performances of today include wooden puppets dressed in colorful costumes accompanied by songs derived from popular films that the crowds can easily relate to. Men operate the puppets and narrate their stories, while wo men sing, thereby providing the musical backdrop to the performance.

The folk puppeteers are like gypsies, wandering in groups from one place to another like nomads, performing for the public in whichever dialect is specific to the region they are traversing.

The Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop (RPTW) has persisted for years in providing a platform to folk artists in order to increase appreciation for their work and ensure the survival of Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage. One of RPTW’s main initiatives is to hold a puppet festival every March at the Museum of Puppetry.

“The Heart - Kasper” is a modern hand puppet play about friendship and fear.  It combines elements of contemporary figure theater with the traditional techniques of the German “Kaspertheater” (similar to the English “Punch”, the French “Guiginiol” and the Italian “Pulchinella”).

The Thalia Theater Halle team has concentrated increasingly on theatre projects that are anchored in their region, that pick up on reality, that introduce new designs for society and promote discussions with the audience.  Thalia has a special predilection for testing out new, unusual spaces and places in the city – theatre in urban space.
