About

Dr.Y.L.Nene

Founder of Asian Agri History Foundation

The Editor

of

Asian Agri History Journal

Dr Yeshwant Laxman Nene (son of Laxman and Laxmi Nene) was born on 24 November 1936 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India.

He obtained BSc (Ag) in 1955 (Gwalior), MSc (Ag) in 1957 (Kanpur), both from Agra University, and PhD in Plant Pathology (Plant Virology) in 1960 from the University of Illinois, USA. He was recipient of several medals, scholarships, and fellowships during the student career.

Dr Nene was assistant, associate, and full professor and Head, Plant Pathology at GB Pant University of Agriculture, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, India from 1960 to 1974. He founded the department of plant pathology. His major achievement was solving the mystery of "khaira" disease of rice, which had forced farmers of the region to give up growing rice.

Dr Nene discovered, for the first time in the world, that rice crop in fields could suffer from a deficiency of zinc and this deficiency was the cause of "khaira". Bumper crops of rice could be raised in the region again. Since then zinc deficiency in rice was found to occur in many parts of India and several other countries, which resulted into increased yields of rice everywhere.

In 1967, this work earned Dr Nene the International Rice Research Prize in a worldwide competition that was organized by the FAO to celebrate the "International Rice year 1966".

In 1974, Dr Nene was invited to join as the first internationally recruited plant pathologist by the newly established International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patancheru, Hyderabad, India. He founded plant pathology research programs at ICRISAT.

His major contribution, while working at ICRISAT, was solving a 40-year-old mystery of a disease of chickpea (gram) called "wilt complex" This work enabled scientists to produce disease resistant

varieties for the first time for use by farmers all over India and elsewhere.

Dr Nene headed the Pulses and Groundnut Program (1986-89) and later held the position of the Deputy Director General (1989-96) at ICRISAT.  In 1996, Dr Nene took voluntary retirement from ICRISAT to spend full time to the activities of the  Asian Agri-History Foundation (AAHF).

Dr Nene is recognized internationally as a plant pathologist and an authority on pulses, such as pigeonpea (toor), chickpea (gram), mungbean, and others.

Since then, he has been working as Chairman (AAHF)  and Senior Managing Editor of a quarterly journal "Asian Agri-History".  He has traveled to more than 60 countries for professional work, has received many fellowships, awards, honors, both nationally and internationally for his researches, and has published more than 500 research papers, books, and bulletins.

Researching agricultural heritage of India is currently a passion for Dr Nene and he plans to spend rest of his life to the mission of AAHF, which he founded with support from many well known professionals.

                              Asian Agri-History Foundation

                                  (AAHF)

The Asian Agri-History Foundation (AAHF), a non-profit trust, was established and registered in 1994 to facilitate dissemination of information on agricultural history to promote research on sustainable agriculture in the South and Southeast Asia region.

This region had generally provided food security to its population for several millennia, with only occasional famines in a few limited pockets (due primarily to drought).

Farmers in the region had evolved some of the most sustainable agricultural management technologies suitable for different agroecoregions. In recent years, however, South and Southeast Asia have often been projected as food-deficient regions where mass-scale starvation could occur in the future despite the fact that modern technologies have been adopted over large areas.

Ironically, in the past few years, the sustainability of agriculture by following modern technologies has been questioned, and with good reason.

How can we make the agriculture in South and Southeast Asia sustainable? The trustees of AAHF believe that there is great deal to be learnt from the traditional wisdom and the indigenous, time-tested technologies that have sustained the farmers of South and Southeast Asia in the past. The historical perspective of gradual development of traditional technologies will provide clues for

(i) understanding how farmers adjusted to changing environment in the past, and

(ii) developing appropriate technologies leading to prosperous, sustainable agriculture.

The Rajasthan Chapter

A large number of distinguished individuals from the Rajasthan state of India wanted to establish a Rajasthan Chapter of the Asian Agri-History Foundation (AAHF). The trustees of AAHF had set up the following guidelines for establishing a Chapter. These are: (i) normally there will not be more than one Chapter in any one state; (ii) there should not be less than 50 subscribers (to the journal) in the particular state; (iii) a Chapter can be set up at a location in a state where at least 20 subscribers (to the journal) reside; (iv) a formal request for setting up a Chapter should originate from a group of subscribers; and (v) the group, making the request to set up a Chapter, should confirm their genuine interest in promoting the objectives and activities of the AAHF.

Since all the above criteria were fulfilled, the trustees of AAHF approved the formation of the Rajasthan Chapter in Udaipur. The Chapter was formally inaugurated on 16 December 2000. The Executive Committee of the Chapter currently constitutes the following: Dr K N Nag (Chairman), Dr S L Choudhary (Secretary), Dr P D Gemawat (Treasurer), and members Dr M M Simlot, Dr B S Chundawat and Dr Abhishek Shukla. AAHF has made some funds available for specific activities of the Chapter. However, the Chapter is raising its own resources.

Hi,

I own a land near Vizag which is about 30 acres. It has cashew plants
right now and wasn't maintained property by previous owner and hence
there is not much output. The income is 1.5 lakhs for 30 acres which is
very very low as you know.

I like to know your thoughts & ideas of what can be done on this land
to get sustained income with low maintenance? I dont want to go into
cultivation which require too much work on it and constant attention. I
live in USA and you can imagine how much effort i can put through a
salaried person locally.

I like to know the thoughts from experts on this forum, the different
options i have.

Thanks
Raj

Dear Mr.Raghu Ram,

Greetings to you as well. Thanks for the compliments.

But we need to take some action on this and freely share our experiences. That I feel is the only way we can bring about a revolution in our Country and eliminate the chances of Farmers committing suicide.

If I had the time I would have tried it myself.I hope someone will try it and share their experience. After all it does not look all that complicated and anyone can do it and it takes just 15 days to prepare. Let's hope we will get a positive result.

Best Wishes,

Calvin Rodrigues

Dear All agriwealth group members.

An article on Kunapajalam from Down to earth

Manure from culled poultry
This is with reference to your story on the poultry
farmers of Alibag who were forced to cull their stock
in the face of the threat from bird flu (‘Contract
killers’, Down To Earth, May 31, 2006). Instead of
letting all their effort go waste, these farmers could
have made an organic liquid manure called kunapa jala
from the culled birds. Kunapa jala is one of the
precious gifts of Vriksayurveda, a 1,000 year old
treatise written by Surapala who describes how to make
it from animal flesh and animal waste.

The process of fermentation and decomposition of the
culled birds described in Vriksayurveda would have
rendered the suspected pathogens harmless. Kunapa jala
can be used to grow food and cash crops. It is a great
soil booster and growth promoter. In fact, kunapa jala
has been used successfully in some coffee estates in
south India and in some tea estates in Assam and
Arunachal Pradesh.

The poultry farmers could sell the manure and at least
escape starvation and penury. Kunapa jala can be made
from the flesh of any domestic or wild animal or from
animal wastes that are usually discarded when the
animal is butchered for consumption.

Those interested in learning more about the
preparation of kunapa jala can refer to Vriksayurveda
of Surapala published by the Asian Agri-History
Foundation in Secunderabad. Else write to Swami
Valmiki Srinivasa Ayangarya (vajadeva@...
who has been experimenting with kunapa jala for the
past 15 years or so.

Dear AG group members.

Poultry litter can be converted to bio-gas by anearobic digestion method.
Bio-gas is a combutable gas which can be used for thermal application and power genration.
In addition 30% of in put is orgonoc manure which has good market value.
If anybody is interested we can provide more information.

Dear Mr Raghu Ram,

I am based in Mumbai.  I would be willing to help members if they need any help from here, especially in marketing aspects.  It would be my endeavour if I could assist in any way to develop agriculture based business for the benefit of interested members to develop rural areas.

It was nice that Mr Raghu Ram has taken an initiative.  I have following thoughts on need to have personal meetings of members and advisors so that ideas are developed quickly into project proposals which can then be implemented without loss of time.  I summarise my views as under-

TYPE OF MEMBERS - I would consider there are two types of members-

a) those who are new to agri activity and would like to associate / invest into agri activity,

b)  those who are already established in the agribusiness and would like to expand into new areas.

APPROACH TO DEVELOP PROJECTS - I would think we should identify key agri areas of interests to various members and also have names of key advisors / consultants in geographical zones (to facilitate personal discussions without much cost / loss of time so that projects progress faster) who are willing to assist in conceptualizing cultivation schemes / projects.

ROLE OF CONSULTANTS

Category a) members and consultants can work together to develop projects on following basis –

  1. The consultants would first assist members in developing conceptual plans for projects of members at a nominal charge.
  2. Once member and consultants agree on a particular project, consultants would assist in developing preliminary details such as location / land requirement, size of project, crop for cultivation / processing facilities, investment estimate, source of funds etc – again at a nominal charge.
  3. Once the member takes a decision to implement the project, the member assigns the task to assist in implementation of the project to the same consultant who is then appropriately compensated for all help rendered by him for all stages of 1 to 3.

Category b) members may like to straight go to stage 3, and they can suitably work out consultancy charges and go ahead with the project.

KEY AGRI AREAS - My suggestions for key areas are as follows.  More areas may be added based on specific interests of the members-

1.  Cultivation

-floriculture for Domestic market

-floriculture for export market

-herbs with special qualities such as stevia, etc.

-Agro tourism

2.  Processing / packing

-extraction of essential oils

-processing of herbs / plants to produce specific chemicals / pharmaceuticals (e.g. Stevia)

-processing of fruits (mango, chikoo, papaya, guava etc)

-tomato ketch up / puree for local market of towns

-Cold storages

GEOGRAPHICAL ZONES -  I would suggest consultants be grouped against each of the above key technical areas, for the following suggested Geographical Zones-

-Hyderabad

-Mumbai

-Pune

-Bangalore

-Ratnagiri

-any other town where consultants are available.

FREQUENCY OF INTERACTIONS AMONG MEMBERS / CONSULTANTS -Members / consultants could meet once every 1 or 2 months as convenient to them in each of these areas to exchange ideas and develop a purpose-oriented action plan for taking up their projects.

I would request views of Mr Raghu Ram and other members / consultants on the above.  This could lead to a movement to develop agri activity across various zones for benefit of all.

Once again I thank Mr Raghu Ram for this initiative of AgriWealthINDIA, let us all members work together under one umbrella!

Kind regards,

B Mahen

Dear Forum Friends

I am C.Selvaraj new entrant to agriculture activities for the past 4 years, with 12 acres near Sathyamangalm, Erode Dist.Tamilnadu.

Actually with my dreams of prospriety and to apply new technical methods in agriculture, after my long try, I have entered into agriculture.
First of all, I tried in floriculture to produce jasmine, rose and lily. Eventhough I have produced a lot, I could not get right price from the local markets.
Then tried to take to the right market place, the transportation cost eroded the entire profit. In total, I incurred loss in floriculture.

Then tried with rice cultivation. In that also, eventhough I can gain good yield. By selling to local brokers, I could not gain.

Now, I am trying to change my method of cultivation and marketing, to enter into contract farming sothat I can get some good price for my produce.

Still my dreams are to be fruitified. Eventhogh of our sincere hardwork and introducing new techs, we could not get right price of the product.
only the local area brokers are earning without land and hardwork.

For every produce, there should be nearest markets and get right price, otherwise, every effort will be in vain only.

The new entrepreneurs in agriculture area need to be cautious and need to be guided well at every stage.  Hence I had suggested a panel of consultants in the vicinity of each geographical areas so that  entrepreneurs can meet consultants and develop confidence.

Mr Raghu Ram – I would request your views on the approach outlined in my earlier email.
