I can help with that! The planetarium is in the ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building (CPSB on this map: http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/map/), on Alumni Drive. There's a garage; here's information about parking there: http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/parking/garage/index.cfm. There's also the parking lot at the Consortium Library, just across Alumni Drive. The website says "permit and meter enforcement" only happens until 7:30pm, so, at least for the CL parking lot, you should be able to just pay for the first hour ($2).

I'm sorry for those of you that preferred Monday (11/30).  I hope you can still make it.

By my count, we've had 28 positive responses - a nice little group, but still room for more.

I'll see if I can get some helpful suggestions regarding parking and actually getting to the planetarium.
I know that the planetarium entrance is on the second floor, but I'm a little vague on which building  :)

This seems like a terrific opportunity.  I may have gotten lazy on ERNC Fridays, but count me in for a visit to the new planetarium - as Monty said, anytime after Thanksgiving.  Sounds like we need some more responses to see if there are enough people to make it worth Dr. Rector's time.

I talked to Travis Rector Thurs. night (at CCSC) and he made an interesting offer...

He would like to arrange a time for the Chugach Stargazers (aka AlaskanAstronomy@ Yahoo?) to visit UAA's new planetarium.

It is not open to the public yet (including classes) because they are still waiting on a Certificate of Occupancy, but they can do small special events.

They are anxious to involve local groups - This means we can go, but we can't advertise publicly.

In fact I think Rector wants to take our group deeper than he would a normal public group.

Note: The theater seats 64 people

What do you think?

Do you have any dates in mind?  We should do it soon if we're going to do it before we have to compete with the public.

Monday, Wed, Fri evenings work best for me.

Greetings All.

We still have one opening in our Astronomy Series that we need to fill.

The open date is Thursday January 14, 2010.

All programs begin at 7:00pm and the slide lecture typically lasts 60-85
minutes.

Other programs in the series this season are:
       The Big Bang and Cosmology
       Listening to Jupiter's Radio Storms
       Cosmic Rays
       What Galileo Saw

If you're interested in doing a talk on January 14, please let me know. I
am happy to discuss possible program topics!

Thanks!

I think I've got 7 or 8, plus a couple of our older ERNC Junior
Astronomers.

More would be better.
I want Dr. Rector to know that we're interested. So I'm about to suggest
either Mon or Wed evening in the week after Thanksgiving (11/30 or 12/2).

By the way; this planetarium is not built around the older machines that
some of you may have grown up with -- it uses a pair of digital projectors.
Dr Rector says they can "show whatever they want." I assume he's not
talking about sit-com reruns.

This seems like a terrific opportunity. I may have gotten lazy on ERNC
Fridays, but count me in for a visit to the new planetarium - as Monty
said, anytime after Thanksgiving. Sounds like we need some more responses
to see if there are enough people to make it worth Dr. Rector's time.

This is great news! I went to Travis's last lecture at CCSC and he
showed us some pics of the new building. Any time after Thanksgiving
day would be great by me!

I talked to Travis Rector Thurs. night (at CCSC) and he made an
       interesting offer...
He would like to arrange a time for the Chugach Stargazers (aka
AlaskanAstronomy@ Yahoo?) to visit UAA's new planetarium.
It is not open to the public yet (including classes) because they are
still waiting on a Certificate of Occupancy, but they can do small
       special events.
They are anxious to involve local groups - This means we can go, but
       we can't advertise publicly.
In fact I think Rector wants to take our group deeper than he would a
       normal public group.

Note: The theater seats 64 people

       What do you think?
Do you have any dates in mind? We should do it soon if we're going
to do it before we have to compete with the public.

Monday, Wed, Fri evenings work best for me.

I've only *just* joined the mailing list, but if you need more people, I'd definitely love to see the planetarium. And, unlike getting out to Eagle River, getting to UAA's campus is pretty easy for me. (I work there.)

I want Dr. Rector to know that we're interested.  So I'm about to suggest either Mon or Wed evening in the week after Thanksgiving (11/30 or 12/2).

By the way; this planetarium is not built around the older machines that some of you may have grown up with -- it uses a pair of digital projectors.
Dr Rector says they can "show whatever they want."  I assume he's not talking about sit-com reruns.

The BLM Campbell Creek Science Center's astronomy lecture series begins
THIS THURSDAY with...

                         The Big Bang and Cosmology

What is the Big Bang and how does it explain the Universe?

Where did the Universe come from, and what existed before it?

And if there's an edge to the Universe, what's on the other side?

Dr. Travis Rector, a professor in the physics and astronomy department at
the University of Alaska Anchorage, will answer these questions and more.
From the origins of the universe to the structure we understand today,
he’ll explain what we know, how we know it, and what mysteries remain about
                                     it.

The program begins at 7:00 pm on Thursday November 12 at the
BLM Campbell Creek Science Center (5600 Science Center Drive).

Star gazing will follow if the skies are clear.

Please call 267-1247 for more information.
