English Translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali

21. Mention (Hud) one of 'Ad's (own) brethren: Behold, he warned his people about the winding Sand-tracts: but there have been warners before him and after him: "Worship ye none other than Allah. Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Mighty Day."

22. They said: "Hast thou come in order to turn us aside from our gods? Then bring upon us the (calamity) with which thou dost threaten us, if thou art telling the truth?"

23. He said: "The Knowledge (of when it will come) is only with Allah. I proclaim to you the mission on which I have been sent: But I see that ye are a people in ignorance!"..

24. Then, when they saw the (Penalty in the shape of) a cloud traversing the sky, coming to meet their valleys, they said, "This cloud will give us rain!" "Nay, it is the (Calamity) ye were asking to be hastened!- A wind wherein is a Grievous Penalty!

25. "Everything will it destroy by the command of its Lord!" Then by the morning they - nothing was to be seen but (the ruins of) their houses! thus do We recompense those given to sin!

26. And We had firmly established them in a (prosperity and) power which We have not given to you (ye Quraish!) and We had endowed them with (faculties of) hearing, seeing, heart and intellect: but of no profit to them were their (faculties of) hearing, sight, and heart and intellect, when they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah. and they were (completely) encircled by that which they used to mock at!

27. We destroyed aforetime populations round about you; and We have shown the Signs in various ways, that they may turn (to Us).

28. Why then was no help forthcoming to them from those whom they worshipped as gods, besides Allah, as a means of access (to Allah.? Nay, they left them in the lurch: but that was their falsehood and their invention.

In the name of Allah, the Most-Merciful, the All-Compassionate

"May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon You"

Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

What To Do If You Are NOT Going For Hajj ?

At the Kaaba

Adapted from: Perfect days for perfect Ibaadah

By Asma bint Shameem

The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are the most beloved to Allah.

The Prophet testified to that. He said: There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” (Bukhaari)

WHAT ACTIVITIES IN THESE 10 DAYS WILL BRING THE REWARD OF JANNAH?

Obviously, Hajj is one of the best deeds that one can do during these ten days. However for those of us who were not invited to His House this year, there are still many, good deeds that one can do and earn the Pleasure of Allah.

Some of these are:

1) Fast all nine days and especially fast the Day of Arafah

The Prophet (PBUH) said: Anyone who fasts for one day for Allah’s pleasure, Allah will keep his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a distance covered by a journey of) seventy years. (Bukhari, Muslim)

The Prophet (PBUH) used to fast on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah and he said: Fasting the Day of Arafah (ninth Dhul-hijjah) is an expiation for (all the sins of) the previous year and an expiation for (all the sins of) the coming year.” (Muslim)

2) Do a LOT of Dhikr and Takbeer

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “There are no days on which good deeds are greater or more beloved to Allah than on these ten days”, so recite much Tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah), Takbeer (saying Allahu akbar) and Tahmeed (saying al-hamdu Lillaah).” (Ahmad -Saheeh)

Ibn Umar and Abu Hurayrah used to go out in the marketplace during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, reciting Takbeer, and the people would recite Takbeer when they heard them. (Bukhaari)

Takbeer at this time is a Sunnah. So recite it in the masjid, in your home, on the street and every place where it is permitted to remember Allah.

Revive the Sunnah that have been virtually forgotten and earn great rewards for doing so.

The Prophet said: Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward.” (Tirmidhi- a hasan hadeeth)

Men should recite these phrases out loud, and women should recite them quietly.

3) Stand in Night Prayers: (Tahajud, Qiyam al Layl)

Remember the virtues of spending the night in prayer, and its sweetness in Ramadan?

Why not revive this beautiful act of worship during these nights as well?

Remember, how in the last third of every night, Allah Almighty calls out to us, His servants:Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him? (Bukhaari, Muslim)

Why do we miss this golden opportunity? So, seize the chance NOW and expose yourself to His Divine Generosity and Mercy, ask Him to forgive you and guide you and set things aright. He will surely listen.

4) Make Sincere Repentance.

One of the most important action during these ten days is to repent sincerely to Allah and to give up all kinds of disobedience and sin right away because we do not know when we will die and thus become unable to repent, and also because one evil deed leads to another.

But what does repentance mean?

It means that you come back to Allah and give up all the deeds, open and secret, that He dislikes…. that you regret whatever you did in the past, giving it up immediately and be determined never ever, to return to it, and resolve to adhere firmly to the Truth by doing whatever Allah loves.

But as for him who repented, believed and did righteous deeds, then he will be among those who are successful.” [Al-Qasas 28:67]

5) Come back to the Quraan

It is time now to dust off your copy of the Quraan and return to its refuge. Make it a daily habit, using these 10 days the beginning of a strong and beautiful relationship with it. Read it with meaning, reflect on it, understand it, and then implement it in your daily life.Remember that reading one letter of the Quraan earns you ten rewards.

In this way, reading Surat Al-Fatihah, which doesn’t take more than two minutes, will give you more than one thousand rewards!

This is on ordinary days, so what about these magnificent days! Certainly the reward will be far greater, Insha Allah.

6) Increase ALL the types of good deeds.

If we are unable to go to Hajj this year, we should occupy ourselves in the worship of Allah; pray extra prayers (Nafilah) recite the Quraan. Make Dhikr of Allah, send Salaams on the Prophet, make dua, give charity, honor our parents, uphold ties of kinship, enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, and add other good deeds and acts of worship during these days.

So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it; And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it.”

[Al-Zalzalah 99:7-8]

7) Get the reward of Hajj wherever you are:

You may be unable to do Hajj this year, and you may feel sad. However, you can get the reward of it right where you are.The Prophet said: Whoever prays Fajr Prayer in congregation, and then sits and remembers Allah until the sun rises, then (after a while) prays two rakas, he will gain a reward equal to that of making perfect Hajj and Umrah.” [He repeated the word "perfect" thrice.] (At-Tirmidhi)

8. Slaughter an animal and distribute the meat.

Ibn Umar said: The Prophet lived in Madeenah for 10 years and every year he slaughtered an animal.” (Ahmad-Saheeh by al-Albaani)

9) Attend Eid prayers

But remember that Eid prayer is a form of worship and we should avoid unislamic behavior (especially) in dress and in etiquette during these times.

10) Thank Allah.

One of the best forms of worshipping Allah Subhaanahu wa Taala is to thank Him, deeply, sincerely and continuously.

Alhamdulillah, there is much to be gained in these coming days. Hasten to do good deeds and striving hard in worship .

And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (death).”

Friday Nasiha;

*Hajj & Hope*

By- Br. Sadullah Khan

Many of those intending pilgrimage this year are about to embark on that life-enhancing journey to hajj, that largest annual convention of faith; where millions of Muslims gather in the holy land, merging as streams of devotees from every corner of the earth to become part of the sea of Believers, spiritually swirling in human waves around the Ka'bah in tawaaf. Each individual pilgrim is a drop in that ocean; an ocean that knows no barrier of race, nor language, color, gender, age or time. The Hajj ...

  • demonstrates universal Islamic fraternity
  • acquaints pilgrims with historical and spiritual environment of Prophet Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam), Hajirah, Prophets Isma'il and Muhammad (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam)
  • re-enacts fundamental aspects of our history
  • reminds of the ‘Grand Assembly' on the Day of Judgment

Hajj, Family and Future

Abraham (Alaihis-salam) was the first to

"announce the pilgrimage" [Qur'an 22:27], while most hajj rites also focus on Abraham (Alaihis-salam) and his family. Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam), Hajirah and Isma'il, played a major role in the re-establishment of tawhid/monotheism in Makkah and much of the annual pilgrimage/hajj undertaken by believers are symbolic re-enactments of significant phases in their life; and this include the tawaaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah), the sa'iy (running between the hills of Safa and Marwa), the udhiyah (sacrifice of animals).

The story of Prophet Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam), Hajar and Isma'il is about..

- the establishment of tawhid
- the struggle of a family to survive
- about community, about the hope, about  preparation for  future generations

This family in that wadi ghayri dhi dhar'in ‘ind baytikal muharram / "barren  valley  near the sacred house" [Q14:37] established the foundation of sound belief for the ideological guidance of generations to come; as a well  as the blessing of the well of zamzam which is a source of life and living, a source of hope for generations to this day and beyond. We send salutation on Prophet Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam) and the family as we send salutation on Prophet Muhammad (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and his family.

Rituals and Beyond

The performance of prescribed rites (manaasik), at specified times, at particular places in a recommended manner is aimed at reflecting a wholesome demonstration of Muslim brotherhood and sisterhood. It familiarizes the pilgrim with the historic, spiritual and physical environment of Adam and Hawa/Eve, of Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam), Isma'il and Hajirah and of Prophet Muhammad (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam). By re-enacting some of the significant elements/moments/aspects of the best of our history (Hajirah's running in search for water, Prophet Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam)'s preparedness to sacrifice his willing and obedient son Isma'il or Abraham (Alaihis-salam)'s pelting of the shaytaan, thereby symbolically declaring war against evil; all this identifies us with the best of our past and the lessons we need to learn from our great legacy.

Perpetuating the Abrahamic Legacy

We, as Muslims have the responsibility of continuing the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam), which was perpetuated by Prophet Muhammad (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam). We need to be of those who transmit ..

  • the principles of tawhid
  • be concerned about the (physical, spiritual and moral) survival of our community
  • be engaged in manifesting hope for future generations.

Though the statement of the Prophet stating that "Islam is based on five pillars" is well-known, most of us do not pay attention to the wider philosophy behind it. Islam is not just about these five pillars. The Prophet is trying to direct us to understand that the pillars serve as our base but there is a structure on top of these pillars.

We need to realize that most of Islam is beyond of the masjid. We are Muslims for 24 hours each day, as Allah says

"I have created you just to worship me".

If prayers takes only 15 minutes of our time, what about rest of the hours in the day? Islam is something that needs to be expressed outside wherever we are. An example can be found in the story of Prophet Yusuf when the inmates who were with him in jail saw a dream and went to him for its meaning, as they remarked that they noticed his goodness and his ability to tell the truth in such matters

We should therefore heed ...

Do not cause mischief/corruption on earth after it has been set proportionately in order; rather call upon the Almighty with deep consciousness and heartfelt desire. Surely, Allah is near to those who do good.

[Qur'an 7:156]

Look at the major issues affecting the world ...

  • Global Climate Change is the single biggest threat to the planet and will affect everyone on Earth.
  • Nuclear War could destroy the human civilization
  • The United Nations Joint Program on AIDS (UNAIDS) estimates that since the start of the global HIV pandemic over 30 million people have been infected with HIV. Over 3 million people die annually due to AIDS, and it is estimated that 25 million children will be orphaned due to AIDS by 2010.
      • In the past decade, more than 4million children have been killed due to war (31 000 a month), and 6 million have been seriously injured or disabled due to war. The onset of war inflates the average child death rate up to 24 times. Thousands die as the result of direct violence; millions more die from indirect consequences, including destruction of food supply, water systems, health services and sanitation.
      • Approximately 1 million children have been orphaned by war in the past decade and an additional 4 million have been subjected to physical mutilation and torture.
  • Hunger, Starvation, Lack of Water. Hunger, poverty, and homelessness are sources of desperation in all parts of the world. Most victims of these social ills are found in developing countries. Consider these statistics from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP):Worldwide:

- nearly 800 million people do not get enough food  daily
- half a billion people suffer from some form of malnutrition, 250 million of these are children of preschool age. Talking about children, recent UNICEF and Save the Children reports indicate that ...

      • 34,000 of the world's children die each day from starvation and related causes

Every three seconds, poverty takes at least one child's life, resulting in 30,000 deaths each day. 11 million children every year and more than 5 million of these are un Only 1% of the world's water is usable to us. About 97% is salty sea water, and 2% is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. Thus that 1% of the world's water supply is a precious commodity necessary for our survival. Dehydration (lack of water) will kill us faster than starvation (lack of food). Since the plants and animals we eat also depend on water, lack of it could cause both dehydration and starvation.
More than one billion people worldwide lack access to clean water and over two billion do not have adequate sanitation facilities. During the past 10 years more people have died from lack of clean water than in armed conflict. 2.4 billion people - or just under half the world's population - have no adequate water supply for daily needs. The World Resources Institute predicts that by 2025, at least 3.5 billion people, or nearly 60 percent of the world's population, will face water scarcity.

Prioritize

The case of the English school teacher Gillian Gibbons indicates how some people are often more passionate about non-issues than about the real issues. People are dying in Sudan, there is internal strife, hunger... and people are emotionally over-charged over a teddy-bear being used as a teaching tool being called by the name of Muhammad (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam); a name chosen by the school students due to the popularity of the name in that area. The teacher is accused of publicly insulting or degrading religion, its rites, beliefs and sacred items or humiliating its believers -- she may face up to six months in jail, 40 lashes and a fine. We must ensure that we never lose our sense of priorities, focusing on major issues, then minor issues; always avoiding non-issues from our priority list.  There are enough major issues affecting the world, let's start there.

The Crucial Question

How are we, the perpetuators of the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim (Alaihis-salam) responding to these crises? How are we engaging in the affairs of community, in bringing about hope, and laying the groundwork in preparation for  future generations?

Glory to the Almighty

Glory be to Allah for making the Ka'bah the meeting of the ummah, for making hajj the key expression of solidarity among Believers and as a manifestation of the bond of fraternity and mutual affinity. All praise is due to Allah for making this unique, international gathering of hajj an inexhaustible source for spiritual revival and as a continuous re-affirmation of faith and may Allah accept the hajj of all who are going.

Narrated Abu Huraira
(radi'Allahu anhu):

Allah's Apostle
(sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam)
talked about Friday and said,

"There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday
and if a Muslim gets it while praying
and asks something from Allah,
then Allah will definitely meet his demand."

And he (the Prophet) pointed out
the shortness of that time with his hands.

English Translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali

15. We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents: In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) thirty months. At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and attains forty years, he says, "O my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for Thy favour which Thou has bestowed upon me, and upon both my parents, and that I may work righteousness such as Thou mayest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to Thee and truly do I bow (to Thee) in Islam."

16. Such are they from whom We shall accept the best of their deeds and pass by their ill deeds: (They shall be) among the Companions of the Garden: a promise! of truth, which was made to them (in this life).

17. But (there is one) who says to his parents, "Fie on you! Do ye hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up, even though generations have passed before me (without rising again)?" And they two seek Allah's aid, (and rebuke the son): "Woe to thee! Have faith! for the promise of Allah is true." But he says, "This is nothing but tales of the ancients!"

18. Such are they against whom is proved the sentence among the previous generations of Jinns and men, that have passed away; for they will be (utterly) lost.

19. And to all are (assigned) degrees according to the deeds which they (have done), and in order that (Allah) may recompense their deeds, and no injustice be done to them.

20. And on the Day that the Unbelievers will be placed before the Fire, (It will be said to them): "Ye received your good things in the life of the world, and ye took your pleasure out of them: but today shall ye be recompensed with a Penalty of humiliation: for that ye were arrogant on earth without just cause, and that ye (ever) transgressed."

Islamic Guidelines for Visitors to the
Prophet Mosque

O you who come to the City of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), you have come to a good place and you are going to earn great reward. May Allaah accept your righteous deeds and fulfil your greatest hopes. Welcome to the land of Hijrah and victory, the land of the Chosen Prophet, the land to which the righteous Sahaabah migrated and the home of the Ansaar.

There follow a few words of advice to those who want to visit the Mosque of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

1 : O you who come to Madeenah, you are in a place which, after Makkah, is the best and noblest of all places, so respect it as it should be respected; honour its sanctity and holiness and observe the best etiquette therein. Know that Allaah has warned of the severest punishment for those who commit evil therein.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Madeenah is a Haram (sanctuary), so whoever commits evil therein or gives protection to an evildoer, the curse of Allaah, the angels and all of mankind may be upon him. Allaah will not accept any obligatory or naafil deed from him on the Day of Resurrection.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1867; Muslim, 1370.

So whoever commits any evil action or offers protection to any evildoer who seeks his help is exposing himself to a humiliating punishment and the wrath of the Lord of the Worlds.

One of the most serious of evil deeds that violate its purity is openly doing acts of bidah and spoiling its atmosphere with myths and false ideas, and contaminating its pure land with the spread of articles which promote bidah, books which contain shirk, and all kinds of reprehensible and haraam actions which go against Islamic shareeah. The evildoer and the one who gives him protection are equally guilty of sin.

2 : Visiting the Prophet Mosque is an act that is Sunnah; it is not an obligatory action and has nothing to do with Hajj, nor is it an action that is required in order for Hajj to be complete.  All the ahaadeeth which say that it is connected to Hajj or that say that visiting the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is  connected to Hajj are fabricated and false. Whoever travels to Madeenah for the purpose of visiting the Mosque and praying therein, his intention is acceptable and his efforts will be rewarded.  Whoever travels there only for the purpose of visiting the graves and seeking the help of their occupants, his intention is haraam and his actions are reprehensible.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not travel to visit any mosques except three: al-Masjid al-Haraam [in Makkah], this Mosque of mine [in Madeenah] and al-Masjid al-Aqsa [in Jerusalem].”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1189; Muslim, 1397.

It was narrated from Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best places to which a person may travel are this Mosque of mine, and the Ancient House (i.e., the Kabah).” Narrated by Ahmad, 3/350; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1648.

3 : Prayers offered in the Mosque of Madeenah bring a multiple reward, both obligatory and naafil prayers according to the more correct of the two scholarly opinions.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “One prayer in this Mosque of mine is better than one thousand prayers offered anywhere else, except al-Masjid al-Haraam.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1190; Muslim, 1394.

But offering naafil prayers at home is better than offering them in the mosque, even if the reward for offering them in the Mosque is multiplied, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “The best prayers are those that a man offers in his home, apart from the prescribed [obligatory] prayers.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 731; Muslim, 781.

4 : The visitor to this great Mosque should note that it is not permissible to seek blessing (barakah) from any part of the Prophet Mosque, such as the pillars, walls, doors, mihraab or minbar, by touching or kissing them. It is also not permitted to seek blessing from the Prophet hujrah (chamber) by touching it, kissing it, or wiping one's clothes against it or to circumambulate it. Whoever does any of these things has to repent and not repeat it.

5 : It is prescribed for the one who visits the Prophets Mosque to pray two rakahs in the Rawdah or whatever he wants of naafil prayers, because it is proven that there is virtue in doing so.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The area between my house and my minbar is one of the gardens (riyaad, sing. rawdah) of Paradise, and my minbar is on my cistern (hawd)”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1196; Muslim, 1391.

And it was narrated that Yazeed ibn Abi Ubayd said: “I used to come with Salamah ibn al-Akwa and he would pray by the pillar which was by the mus-haf, i.e. in the Rawdah. I said, ‘O Abu Muslim, I see that you are keen to pray by this pillar!’ He said, ‘I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was keen to pray here.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 502; Muslim, 509.

Being keen to pray in al-Rawdah does not justify being aggressive towards people or pushing the weak aside, or stepping over their necks.

6 : It is prescribed for the visitor to Madeenah and for the one who lives there to go to the Mosque of Quba and pray there, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and seeking the reward of Umrah.

It was narrated that Sahl ibn Haneef said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever goes out until he comes to this mosque – meaning the Mosque of Quba – and prays there, that will be equivalent to Umrah.”

Narrated by Ahmad, 3/437; al-Nasaa’i, 699; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1180, 1181.

According to Ibn Maajah: “Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the Mosque of Quba and prays there, he will have the reward of Umrah.”

Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 1412.

In al-Saheehayn it is narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to go to the mosque of Quba’ every Saturday, walking or riding, and he would pray two rakahs there.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1191; Muslim, 1399

7 : For the visitor to Madeenah, it is not prescribed to visit any other mosques in the city apart from these two, the Mosque of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the Mosque of Quba. It is not prescribed for the visitor or anyone else to head for a particular spot, hoping for blessing or to worship Allaah in that place, when there is no evidence from the Quraan or Sunnah concerning visiting that place and no evidence that the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) did that.

It is not prescribed to go to the places and mosques in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or the Sahaabah prayed in order to pray there or to worship Allaah by offering duaas there etc., because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not enjoin that or encourage people to visit these places.

It was narrated that al-Maroor ibn Suwayd (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: We went out with Umar ibn al-Khattaab, and we passed by a mosque on the way. The people hastened to pray there, and Umar said, “What is the matter with them?” They said, “This is a mosque in which the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed.” Umar said, “O people, those who came before you were doomed because they followed such practices, until they established places of worship in such locations. If a time for prayer comes when you are there, then pray, and if it is not the time for prayer, then move on.”

Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf, 7550.

When Umar ibn al-Khattaab heard that there were people who came to the tree under which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had received the bayah (oath of allegiance), he ordered that it be cut down.

Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf, 7545.

8 : It is prescribed for men who are visiting the Prophets Mosque to visit the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the graves of his two companions Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them), and to send salaams upon them and make duaa for them.

The way in which the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is to be visited is that the visitor should come to the grave and face it and say

Al-salaamu alayka ya Rasool-Allaah (Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allaah).”

Then he should move about a yard to his right and say salaams to Abu Bakr by saying, “Al-salaamu alayka ya Aba Bakr.”

Then he should move a little further to his right, about a yard, and say salaams to Umar ibn al-Khattaab, by saying, ‘Al-salaamu alayka ya Umar.”

9 : It is prescribed for men who are visiting Madeenah to visit the people buried in Baqee al-Gharqad and the martyrs of Uhud, to send salaams on them and to make duaa for them.

It was narrated that Buraydah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to teach them, when they went out to the graveyards, to say,

Al-salaamu alaykum ahl al-diyaar min al-mumineen wal-muslimeen,

wa innaa in sha Allaah bikum laahiqoon.

Nasal Allaah lana wa lakum al-aafiyah.

(Peace be upon you, O dwellers of these abodes, believers and Muslims. We will, when Allaah wills, join you. We ask Allaah to grant salvation to us and you).”

10 – Visiting the graves is prescribed for two great purposes:

(i)   So that the visitor may receive a lesson and reminder.

(ii)  So that the person visited will benefit from the duaas and prayers for mercy and forgiveness that are offered for him.

Permission to visit graves is subject to the condition that no false words are spoken, the worst of which are shirk and kufr.

It was narrated from Buraydah from his father that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I used to forbid you to visit graves, but now whoever wants to visit them let him do so, but do not utter any falsehood.”

Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 2033; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 886.

Muslim narrated this also (no. 977), but without the phrase, “but do not utter any falsehood.”

It is not permitted to circumambulate these graves or any others, or to pray towards them or amongst them, or to perform acts of worship beside them such as reading Quraan, making duaa, etc, because these are means of associating others in worship with the Lord of all creation and taking them (graves) as places of worship , even if no mosque is built over them.

It was narrated that Aaishah and Abd-Allaah ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: When death was approaching the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he put a cloak over his face, and when he felt hot he removed it and said, “May Allaah’s curse be upon the Jews and Christians, for they took the graves of their Prophets as places of worship” – warning against doing what they did. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 436; Muslim, 529.

And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The most evil of people are those upon whom the Hour will come when they are still alive and those who take graves as places of worship.”

Narrated by Ahmad, 1/405. It is also narrated by al-Bukhaari in a mu’allaq report in Kitaab al-Fitan, Baab Zuhoor al-Fitan, 7067.

It was narrated that Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, “Do not sit on graves or pray facing towards them.” Narrated by Muslim, 972.

And it was narrated that Abu Saeed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “All of the earth is a place of prayer apart from graveyards and bathrooms.”

Narrated by Ahmad, 3/83; al-Tirmidhi, 317; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 1/320.

It is not permissible to prostrate on graves, rather that is a kind of idolatry and ignorance, and a sign of intellectual deviation and backwardness. It is not permissible for the visitor to those graves or anyone else to seek blessings from them by touching them, kissing them, clinging with any part of the body to them, or to seek healing from its dirt by rubbing ones hands or face with it or to take anything from them in order to dilute it with water and wash oneself with it. It is not permissible for visitors to the grave or others to bury any part of their hair or body or handkerchiefs in them, or to put their pictures or anything else that they may have with them in their soil in order to seek blessing (barakah). It is not permissible to throw money or any kind of food such as grains etc. on them. Whoever does any of these things has to repent, and not do it again. It is not permissible to perfume them, or to swear to Allaah by their occupants. It is not permissible to ask of Allaah by virtue of their occupants or their status, rather that is a haraam kind of beseeching Allaah and is one of the means that lead to shirk. It is not allowed to build up the graves or erect any structure over them, because this is a means of veneration that leads to shirk. It is not permissible to sell food or perfume etc to one who it is known will use them for such seriously wrong actions.

Seeking the help of the dead or asking them for support or calling upon them and asking them to meet needs and to help alleviates calamity and to bring benefits and ward off hardships are all forms of major shirk which put a person beyond the pale of Islam and make him a worshipper of idols, because no one can relieve a person of worries and distress except Allaah alone with no partner or associate.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Such is Allaah, your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmeer (the thin membrane over the date stone).

If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call; and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All‑Knower (of everything”

[Faatir 35:13-14]

“Say (O Muhammad): ‘Call upon those — besides Him whom you pretend [to be gods like angels, ‘Eesa (Jesus), ‘Uzayr (Ezra) and others]. They have neither the power to remove the adversity from you nor even to shift it from you to another person.’

Those whom they call upon [like ‘Eesa (Jesus) ‑ son of Maryam (Mary), ‘Uzayr (Ezra), angel and others] desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (Allaah), as to which of them should be the nearest; and they [‘Eesa (Jesus), ‘Uzayr (Ezra), angels and others] hope for His Mercy and fear His Torment. Verily, the Torment of your Lord is (something) to be afraid of!”

Q 1:   What is "Wudu'' (ablution)?

A. To wash the face from the forelock down to the lower portion of the chin and from the lobe of one ear to the other to wash hands upto the elbows and the feet upto ankles and passing wet fingers of both the hands over the head is called ''Wudu'' (ablution). It is forbidden to offer prayer without ablution.

Q 2: What is the method of performing Wudu?

A. Sit at a clean elevated place facing the Qibla to perform ablution and then recite "Bismil Laa-hir Rahmaa-nir Raheem'' (Allah, in the name of, the Most Affectionate, the Most Merciful) with the intention of gaining reward and carrying out the command of Allah Almighty; wash both hands upto the wrists and then apply ''Miswaak'' (soft tooth stick) to the teeth if available otherwise rub the teeth with the forefinger; rinse the mouth thoroughly thrice and also gargle if not observing   fast; sniff up water into the nostrils with the right hand three times ensuring that the water reaches the soft spot of the nose and wash the nose with the left hand; wash the face well thrice in such a way that no spot from the forelock down to the lower portion of the chin and from the lobe of one ear to the other remains dry (the water should flow on each spot of the face); wash both the hands (first right hand and then the left) upto, inclusive of the elbows three times (no spot even nails should remain dry); do ''Masah'' of the head ears and neck with wet hands only once and then wash the feet (first the right foot and then the left) inclusive of the ankles thrice.

Q 3: How to do Masah?

A. Having the hands wet with fresh water join three fingers (excluding the forefingers and thumbs) of both the hands and pass them over the head from the forelock upto the nape of the neck and then bring them back similarly to the forehead; (the palms should not touch the head); wipe the inner sides of the ears with the tips of forefingers and wipe the outsides of the ears with the insides of the thumbs and the neck be wiped with the back of the fingers. It is undesirable to do Masah of the throat.

Q 4: What should be recited after Wudu?

A. Having performed Wudu recite: "Allaa-hummaj 'Alnee Minat-tawwaabeena waj'alnee Minal Mutatah-hareen" (O' Allah! make me of those who have repented and make me of those who have been purified by You). Drink a little of the rest of ablution's water (standing upright). Recite Kalimah-e-shahaadat raising index finger towards and looking to the sky and also recite Surah Al-Qadr which will earn the believer a great reward.

Transliteration 195:  Faistajaba lahum rabbuhum annee la odeeAAu AAamala AAamilin minkum min thakarin aw ontha baAAdukum min baAAdin faallatheena hajaroo waokhrijoo min diyarihim waoothoo fee sabeelee waqataloo waqutiloo laokaffiranna AAanhum sayyiatihim walaodkhilannahum jannatin tajree min tahtiha alanharu thawaban min AAindi Allahi waAllahu AAindahu husnu alththawabi
Yusuf Ali 195:  And their Lord hath accepted of them, and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: Ye are members, one of another: Those who have left their homes, or been driven out therefrom, or suffered harm in My Cause, or fought or been slain,- verily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath;- A reward from the presence of Allah, and from His presence is the best of rewards."
Shakir 195:  So their Lord accepted their prayer: That I will not waste the work of a worker among you, whether male or female, the one of you being from the other; they, therefore, who fled and were turned out of their homes and persecuted in My way and who fought and were slain, I will most certainly cover their evil deeds, and I will most certainly make them enter gardens beneath which rivers flow; a reward from Allah, and with Allah is yet better reward.
Pickthal 195:  And their Lord hath heard them (and He saith): Lo! I suffer not the work of any worker, male or female, to be lost. Ye proceed one from another. So those who fled and were driven forth from their homes and suffered damage for My cause, and fought and were slain, verily I shall remit their evil deeds from them and verily I shall bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow - A reward from Allah. And with Allah is the fairest of rewards.
Mohsin Khan: 195:  So their Lord accepted of them (their supplication and answered them), "Never will I allow to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female. You are (members) one of another, so those who emigrated and were driven out from their homes, and suffered harm in My Cause, and who fought, and were killed (in My Cause), verily, I will expiate from them their evil deeds and admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise); a reward from Allah, and with Allah is the best of rewards."

Allah's Messenger (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam) as saying:

The vilest name in Allah's sight is
Malik al-Amidh
(Shahinshah) (king of kings).

The narration transmitted on the authority of Shaiba

(radi'Allahu anhu) (contains these words):

There is no king but Allah,
the Exalted and Glorious.

Sufyan
(radi'Allahu anhu) said:

Similarly, the word Shahinshah

(is also the vilest appellation).

(radi'Allahu anhu) said:

I asked Abu 'Amr

English Translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali

6. And when mankind are gathered together (at the Resurrection), they will be hostile to them and reject their worship (altogether)!

7. When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, the Unbelievers say, of the Truth when it comes to them: "This is evident sorcery!"

8. Or do they say, "He has forged it"? Say: "Had I forged it, then can ye obtain no single (blessing) for me from Allah. He knows best of that whereof ye talk (so glibly)! Enough is He for a witness between me and you! And he is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

9. Say: "I am no bringer of new-fangled doctrine among the apostles, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I follow but that which is revealed to me by inspiration; I am but a Warner open and clear."

10. Say: "See ye? If (this teaching) be from Allah, and ye reject it, and a witness from among the Children of Israel testifies to its similarity (with earlier scripture), and has believed while ye are arrogant, (how unjust ye are!) truly, Allah guides not a people unjust."

11. The Unbelievers say of those who believe: "If (this Message) were a good thing, (such men) would not have gone to it first, before us!" And seeing that they guide not themselves thereby, they will say, "this is an (old,) falsehood!"

12. And before this, was the Book of Moses as a guide and a mercy: And this Book confirms (it) in the Arabic tongue; to admonish the unjust, and as Glad Tidings to those who do right.

13. Verily those who say, "Our Lord is Allah," and remain firm (on that Path),- on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

14. Such shall be Companions of the Gardens, dwelling therein (for aye): a recompense for their (good) deeds.

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu

Mistakes made when doing Tawaaf

These are mistakes that occur during tawaaf, and are of various types:

1 :  Uttering the intention out loud when wanting to do tawaaf, so you see the pilgrim standing facing the Black Stone when he wants to do tawaaf, saying, “O Allaah, I intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf for Umrah" or “O Allaah, I intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf for Hajj,” or “O Allaah, I intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf in order to draw closer to You.”

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did tawaaf before you and he did not speak the intention out loud when he did tawaaf. The Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) did tawaaf before you and did not speak the intention out loud when they did tawaaf, or when doing any other act of worship, so this is a mistake.

2 :  Some of those who do tawaaf push and shove too much when they touch the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner, and they are disturbed by the overcrowding and disturb others. They may be pushing and shoving a woman, and the Shaytaan may tempt him and fill his heart with desire when he is crowding this woman in this narrow place. People are only human and may be overwhelmed by their souls that prompt them to do evil, so an evil action may take place in the shadow of the House of Allaah. This is a matter that becomes even worse in light of where it takes place, although it is a fitnah in any place it happens.

It is not prescribed to push and shove when touching the Black Stone or the Yemeni Corner, rather if it is easy for you to do so in a calm and dignified manner, then you must do it, and if it is not easy for you to do it, then you should just point to the Black Stone.

With regard to the Yemeni Corner, there is no report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that he pointed to it, and we cannot compare it to the Black Stone, because the Black Stone is greater than it, and it was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) pointed to the Black Stone.

Just as crowding is not prescribed in this situation and there is the fear that it may cause fitnah when one is crowded together with women, so too it may also cause annoyance, because in crowded situations a person will inevitably hear words that he dislikes and he will feel annoyed and angry when he leaves this place.

What the person who is doing tawaaf should do is always remain calm and dignified, so that he will have the proper presence of mind for worshipping Allaah.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Tawaaf around the House and (Saai) between al-Safa and al-Marwah and the stoning of the Jamaar have only been prescribed so that remembrance of Allaah (dhikr) will be established.”

3  : Some people think that tawaaf is not valid unless one kisses the Black Stone, and that kissing the Black Stone is one of the conditions of tawaaf being valid, and of Hajj and Umrah being valid too. This is a mistaken notion.

Kissing the Black Stone is Sunnah, and it is not an independent Sunnah either, rather it is Sunnah for the one who is doing tawaaf. I do not know that kissing the Black Stone is Sunnah except in tawaaf. Based on this, since kissing the Black Stone is Sunnah and is not obligatory and is not a condition of Tawaaf, then if a person does not kiss it, we do not say that his tawaaf is invalid or that his tawaaf is lacking and he is sinning. Rather his tawaaf is valid and if there is a lot of crowding then pointing is better than touching, because this is what the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did when the place was crowded, and because by doing this a person avoids harm that he may do to others or that others may do to him.

If someone were to ask us: If the Mataaf (place of tawaaf) is very crowded, what do you think – is it better to push in and touch and kiss the Black Stone, or to point to it?

We say that it is better to point to it, because that is the Sunnah. That was narrated from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

4  : Kissing the Yemeni Corner. There is no proof concerning this from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and if an act of worship is not proven from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) then it is bidah and is not an act of worship that brings one closer to Allaah. Based on this, it is not prescribed to kiss the Yemeni Corner, because that was not proven from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Rather that was narrated in a daeef (weak) hadeeth that cannot be taken as evidence.

5  : Some people, when they touch the Black Stone or Yemeni Corner, touch it with their left hands in a careless manner. This is a mistake, because the right hand is better than the left hand, and the left hand is only used for unclean things such as cleaning oneself after relieving oneself, or rinsing ones nose, and so on. When it comes to matters of kissing and respect, the right hand should be used.

6  : They think that touching the Black Stone and the Yemeni corner is done for barakah or blessing, not as part of the ritual of tawaaf, so they touch them seeking barakah from them. This is undoubtedly contrary to the purpose, for the purpose of touching the Black Stone or wiping it or kissing it is to glorify Allaah.

Hence when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) touched the Black Stone he said: “Allaahu akbar,” as an indication that the purpose of this action is to glorify Allaah, not to seek barakah by touching this stone.

Hence when the caliph Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) touched the Black Stone he said: “By Allaah, I know that you are just a stone and can neither cause harm nor bring benefit. Were it not that I had seen the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kiss you, I would not have kissed you.”

This mistaken notion held by some people – that the purpose behind touching the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone is to seek barakah – has led some of them to bring their young children and touch the Corner or the Stone with their hands, then wipe their children with their hands. This is a corrupt belief that should be denounced. We should explain to people that these stones can neither harm nor benefit, and that the purpose of touching them is to glorify Allaah and establish His remembrance (dhikr), and to follow the example of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

All of these matters and others are not prescribed in shareeah. Rather they are innovations (bidah) and do not benefit those who do them in any way. But if the one who does that is ignorant and does not realize that this is bidah, then there is the hope that he may be forgiven. But if he knows that this is bid’ah or is negligent and does not ask about his religion, then he is sinning.

7  : Some people recite a specific duaa in each circuit. This is a kind of bidah that was not narrated from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or his companions. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not recite a specific duaa in each circuit, and neither did his companions. The most that can be said concerning that is that between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!” [al-Baqarah 2:201 – interpretation of the meaning].

And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Tawaaf around the House and (Saa’i) between al-Safa and al-Marwah and the stoning of the Jamaar have only been prescribed so that remembrance of Allaah (dhikr) will be established.”

This bidah is even more wrong when the person carries a small booklet in which there is a duaa for each circuit, and he reads this booklet, not knowing what he is saying, either because he does not know Arabic and does not understand the meanings, or because although he is an Arab and speaks Arabic he does not know what he is saying. We even hear some of them say du’aa’s that clearly deviate from Islamic teaching; for example, we have heard someone saying, “O Allaah, make me independent of means by Your Majesty (jalaalika) so I have no need of that which You have forbidden” when he should have said, “by that which You have permitted (halaalika).”

We also see some people reading this booklet, and when they finish the duaa for the circuit they are doing, they stop and do not recite any other duaa for the rest of that circuit. If there are not many people in the Mataaf, they finish the circuit before they finish the duaa, so they cut the duaa short.

The remedy for that is to explain to the pilgrims that during tawaaf a person can say whatever duaa he wants, and he can remember Allaah (dhikr) however he wants.

Mistakes that are made
when stoning the Jamaraat

It was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that he stoned Jamarat al-Aqabah which is al-Jamarah al-Quswa which is closer to Makkah, with seven pebbles, during the morning of the Day of Sacrifice, saying “Allaahu akbar” with every pebble which was a little bigger than a chicken-pea.

Ibn Maajah (3029) narrated that Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to me on the morning of al-Aqabah when he was standing atop his camel: “Come and pick up for me.” So I picked up for him pebbles which were a little bigger than a chickpea. He put them in his hand and said, “With pebbles like this stone (the Jamaraat)… and beware of going to extremes, for those who came before you were destroyed because of going to extremes in religion.”
Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 2455.

Ahmad and Abu Dawood narrated from Aaishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Tawaaf around the House, [Sa’ee] between al-Safa and al-Marwah and stoning the Jamaraat have been prescribed to establish the remembrance of Allaah.”

This is the reason why the stoning of the Jamaraat has been prescribed.

There are many mistakes committed by some pilgrims when stoning the Jamaraat.

1 :  Some people think that the stoning of the Jamaraat is not valid unless it is done with pebbles from Muzdalifah. Hence you will find them going to a lot of trouble to gather the pebbles from Muzdalifah before they go to Mina. This is a mistaken idea, because the pebbles may be taken from anywhere, from Muzdalifah, from Mina, or from any place. The point is that they should be pebbles.

There is no report that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) picked up the pebbles from Muzdalifah, so that we could say that this is Sunnah. It is not Sunnah, and it is not obligatory to pick up the pebbles from Muzdalifah, because the Sunnah is either the words or actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), or what he approved of – none of which apply in the case of picking up pebbles from Muzdalifah.

2 : Some people, when they pick up the pebbles, wash them, either for fear that someone may have urinated on them, or to clean them, because they think that if they are clean, this is better. Whatever the case, washing the pebbles is an innovation (bidah), because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not do that, and worshipping Allaah by doing something that the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not do is a kind of bidah. If a person does that without the intention of it being an act of worship then it is foolishness and is a waste of time.

3 :  Some people think that these Jamaraat are devils, and that they are actually stoning devils, so you may see them becoming very emotional and very angry, as if the Shaytaan himself is in front of him, and this leads to the following grave errors:

1-      This is a mistaken notion. We stone these Jamaraat as an act of remembering Allaah, following the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as an act of worship. If a person does an act of worship and does not know its benefits, but he does it only as an act of worship for Allaah, this will be more indicative of his humility and submission to Allaah.

2-      A person may become very angry and emotional, so you see him disturbing people greatly, as if the people in front of him are vermin and he doesnt care about them or the weak among them, he just goes forward like a crazy camel.

3-      A person may not remember that he is worshipping Allaah by stoning these Jamaraat. Hence he neglects to say the dhikr prescribed in shareeah and says words that are not prescribed in shareeah, such as saying, “O Allaah, we are angry with the Shaytaan and are pleased with al-Rahmaan (the Most Merciful),” even though this is not prescribed when stoning the Jamaraat; rather what is prescribed is to say “Allaahu akbar,” as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to do.

4-      Based on this false belief you will see some people picking up large rocks and throwing them, because they think that the bigger the rock, the greater the effect and revenge on the Shaytaan. You also see them throwing shoes, pieces of wood and the like, which are not prescribed for throwing.

So if we say that this belief is false, what do we then believe about stoning the Jamaraat? We believe that we stone the Jamaraat as an act of veneration and worship of Allaah, and following the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

4 :  Some people are careless and do not care whether the pebbles land in the pit around the Jamaraat or not.

If the pebbles do not land in the pit around the Jamaraat, then the stoning is not valid. It is sufficient for the person to think it most likely that the pebbles have landed in the pit around the Jamaraat, and it is not essential to be certain, because certainty in this case may not be possible; if one cannot be certain that he should act on what he thinks is most likely. The Lawgiver allows a person to proceed on the basis of what he thinks is most likely, if he is uncertain as to how many rakahs he has prayed, three or four, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Let him decide what is most likely the case, then complete it on that basis.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1020.

This proves that in matters of  ibaadah it is sufficient to base ones actions on what he thinks is most likely the case. This is because Allaah wants to make things easy because it may not be possible to be certain.

If the pebbles land in the pit around the Jamaraat, then the duty has been discharged, whether they stay in the pit or roll out of it.

5 :  Some people think that the pebbles must hit the pillar in the pit. This is a mistaken notion, because it is not essential for the stoning to be valid that the pebbles should hit this pillar. This pillar is only there as a marker for the pit in which the pebbles land. If the pebbles land in the pit that is sufficient, whether they hit the pillars or not.

6:  One of the most serious mistakes that are made is when some people take the matter of stoning the Jamaraat lightly, and delegate someone else to do it on their behalf even though they are able to do it. This is a serious mistake, because stoning the Jamaraat is one of the rituals of Hajj. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And perform properly (i.e. all the ceremonies according to the ways of Prophet Muhammad), the Hajj and ‘Umrah (i.e. the pilgrimage to Makkah) for Allaah”
[al-Baqarah 2:196]

This means completing Hajj with all its rituals in full. So each person must do them himself, and not delegate someone else to do it on his behalf.

Some people say, “The place is too crowded and it is too difficult for me.” We say to them, “If the crowding is too bad when the people first come to Mina from Muzdalifah it will not be so bad at the end of the day, or at night. If you do not manage to stone the Jamaraat during the day, then you can do it at night, because night is also the time for stoning, although the day is preferable. But it is better for a person to come and do the stoning at night in a calm, dignified and humble manner than to come during the day fearing that he may die because of the overcrowding, and he may throw his pebbles and they may not land in the pit. The point is if someone uses the overcrowding as an excuse, we say to him: Allaah has given plenty of room for manoeuvre, so you can stone the Jamaraat at night.

Similarly if a woman is afraid of something if she stones the Jamaraat with the people, she can delay it until the night. Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not allow the weak ones among his family – such as Sawdah bint Zamah and those like her – to forego stoning the Jamaraat and to delegate someone else to do it on their behalf; rather he gave them permission to leave Muzdalifah at the end of the night, to stone the Jamaraat before the place became crowded. This is the greatest evidence that a woman should not delegate this task just because she is a woman.

Yes, if a person is disabled and unable to stone the Jamaraat by himself, either during the day or at night, then in this case it is permissible for him to delegate it to someone else, because he is incapable of doing it. It was narrated from the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) that they used to stone the Jamaraat on behalf of their children, because the children were unable to do it.

Whatever the case, being careless with regard to this matter – i.e., delegating the stoning of the Jamaraat, except for those who have excuses which mean that they are unable to do it – is a serious mistake, because it is carelessness with regard to an act of worship, and negligence with regard to a duty.

Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab (radi'Allahu anhu):

reported the Prophet (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam) as saying:

There are people from the servants of Allah

who are neither prophets nor martyrs;

the prophets and martyrs will envy them

on the Day of Resurrection

for their rank from Allah, the Most High.

They (the people) asked:

Tell us, Apostle of Allah, who are they?

He (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied:

They are people who love one another

for the spirit of Allah (i.e. the Qur'an),

without having any mutual kinship

and giving property to one.

I swear by Allah, their faces will glow

and they will be (sitting) in (pulpits of) light.

They will have no fear (on the Day)

when the people will have fear,

and they will not grieve when the people will grieve.

He (sall'Allahu alaihi wa sallam) then recited

the following Qur'anic verse:

"Behold! Verily for the friends of Allah

there is no fear, nor shall they grieve."

{Surah Yunus - Ayat 92}

1. Ha-Mim.

2. The Revelation of the Book is from Allah the Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom.

3. We created not the heavens and the earth and all between them but for just ends, and for a Term Appointed: But those who reject Faith turn away from that whereof they are warned.

4. Say: "Do ye see what it is ye invoke besides Allah. Show me what it is they have created on earth, or have they a share in the heavens bring me a book (revealed) before this, or any remnant of knowledge (ye may have), if ye are telling the truth!

5. And who is more astray than one who invokes besides Allah, such as will not answer him to the Day of Judgment, and who (in fact) are unconscious of their call (to them)?

23. Then seest thou such a one as takes as his god his own vain desire? Allah has, knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart (and understanding), and put a cover on his sight. Who, then, will guide him after Allah (has withdrawn Guidance)? Will ye not then receive admonition?

24. And they say: "What is there but our life in this world? We shall die and we live, and nothing but time can destroy us." But of that they have no knowledge: they merely conjecture:

25. And when Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them their argument is nothing but this: They say, "Bring (back) our forefathers, if what ye say is true!"

26. Say: "It is Allah Who gives you life, then gives you death; then He will gather you together for the Day of Judgment about which there is no doubt": But most men do not understand.

27. To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and the Day that the Hour of Judgment is established,- that Day will the dealers in Falsehood perish!

28. And thou wilt see every sect bowing the knee: Every sect will be called to its Record: "This Day shall ye be recompensed for all that ye did!

29. "This Our Record speaks about you with truth: For We were wont to put on Record all that ye did."

30. Then, as to those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them to His Mercy that will be the achievement for all to see.

31. But as to those who rejected Allah, (to them will be said): "Were not Our Signs rehearsed to you? But ye were arrogant, and were a people given to sin!

32. "And when it was said that the promise of Allah was true, and that the Hour- there was no doubt about its (coming), ye used to say, 'We know not what is the hour: we only think it is an idea, and we have no firm assurance.'"

33. Then will appear to them the evil (fruits) of what they did, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!

34. It will also be said: "This Day We will forget you as ye forgot the meeting of this Day of yours! and your abode is the Fire, and no helpers have ye!

35. "This, because ye used to take the Signs of Allah in jest, and the life of the world deceived you:" (From) that Day, therefore, they shall not be taken out thence, nor shall they be received into Grace.

36. Then Praise be to Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth,- Lord and Cherisher of all the Worlds!

37. To Him be glory throughout the heavens and the earth: and He is Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom!

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu

Mistakes made when entering Ihraam for Hajj on the day of Al-Tarwiyah

On the eighth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah (yawm al-tarwiyah), we notice some people doing two things:
1- They enter ihraam for Hajj from al-Masjid al-Haraam
2- They do not put on the ihraam garments that they wore for ‘Umrah.
Is this correct or not?.

This is one of the mistakes that are made when entering ihraam for Hajj.

We will deal with it in some detail.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Some of the mistakes made when entering ihraam for Hajj on the day of al-tarwiyah include the following:

1 :  Some people think that they have to enter ihraam from al-Masjid al-Haraam, so you see them putting themselves through hardship to go to the mosque and enter ihraam from there. This is a mistaken notion, because it is not obligatory to enter ihraam from al-Masjid al-Haraam.

Rather the Sunnah is for the pilgrim to enter ihraam from the place where he is staying, because the Sahaabah who had exited ihraam for Umrah by the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) then entered ihraam for Hajj on the day of al-Tarwiyah, did not go to al-Masjid al-Haraam to enter ihraam from there, rather each one of them entered ihraam from the place where he was staying. This was at the time of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so this is the Sunnah. So the Sunnah for the one who wants to enter ihraam for Hajj is to enter ihraam from the place where he is staying, whether he is in Makkah or in Mina, as some people do nowadays, when they go to Mina so that they can keep their places there.

2 :  Some of the pilgrims think that it is not proper to enter ihraam in the garments that they wore when they entered ihraam for Umrah, unless they wash them first. This is also a mistaken notion, because the ihraam garments do not have to be new or clean. It is true that the cleaner they are, the better, but to say that they are not valid for ihraam because one has worn them for ihraam when performing Umrah is not correct. This is what springs to mind now about the mistakes made by some pilgrims with regard to entering ihraam for Hajj.

(source-islam-qa)

Mistakes made when going to Arafah
and in Arafah itself

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

It was narrated that on the day of Arafah the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stayed in Namirah (which is a place near Arafah) until the sun had passed its zenith (which is the beginning of the time  for Zuhr), then he rode, then he stopped at the bottom of Wadi Arnah (which is a wadi or valley between Namirah and Arafaat), where he prayed Zuhr and Asr, shortening them to two rakahs and joining them together at the time of Zuhr, with one adhaan and two iqaamahs. Then he rode on until he came to the place of standing, and stood there. He said, “I am standing here but all of Arafah is the place of standing.” Then he remained standing, facing the qiblah, raising his hands, remembering Allaah and calling upon Him, until the sun had set completely, then he went on to Muzdalifah.

Some of the mistakes that some pilgrims make in Arafah are as follows:

1 :  Some pilgrims pass you and you do not hear them reciting the Talbiyah. They do not recite the Talbiyah out loud on their way from Mina to Arafah. It was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) continued to recite the Talbiyah until he had stoned Jamarat al-Aqabah on the day of Eid.

2 :  One of the most serious mistakes that some pilgrims make is to stop outside Arafah, and they stay there until the sun goes down, then they leave for Muzdalifah. Those who stand in these places have not performed Hajj, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:Hajj is Arafah.”

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (889) and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 1064).

Whoever does not stand in Arafah in a place that is part of it, and at the time specified for the standing, his Hajj is not valid, because of the hadeeth referred to.

This is a serious matter.

There are markers that clearly indicate the boundaries of Arafah, and they are not hidden except for one who is careless and negligent. Every pilgrim must look for the boundaries so that he will be sure that he is standing in Arafah and not outside it.

I wish that those who organize the Hajj would announce to the people via a means that would reach all of them, in numerous languages, and tell the mutawwifeen (Hajj guides) to warn the pilgrims about that, so that the people would be aware of this issue and perform their Hajj in the proper manner.

3 : Some people busy themselves with duaa at the end of the day, so you see them facing towards the mountain by which the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood, even though the qiblah may be behind them or to their right or their left. This is also ignorance and a mistake.

What is prescribed for duaa on the day of Arafah is for the person to face the qiblah, whether the mountain is in front of him or behind him, or to his right or his left. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) only faced this mountain because the place where he stood was behind the mountain. He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) faced towards the qiblah, and because the mountain was between him and the qiblah, he had not choice but to face it too.

4 :  Some people think that they have to go to the place where the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood, beside the mountain, and stand there. So you see them putting themselves through a great deal of trouble to reach that place. They may be walking and may be unfamiliar with the routes and getting hungry and thirsty if they cannot find food and water, and getting lost, and suffering a great deal of harm because of this mistaken notion.

It was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “I am standing here but all of Arafah is the place of standing.”

It is as if the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was pointing out that no one should go to the trouble of standing in the place where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood, rather people should do what is easy for them, because all of Arafah is the place of standing.

5 :  Some people think that the trees in Arafaah are like the trees in Mina and Muzdalifah, i.e., it is not permissible to cut a leaf or branch from them, and so on, because they think that cutting the trees has to do with ihraam, like hunting. This is a mistaken notion, because cutting trees has nothing to do with ihraam, rather it has to do with the place. Whatever trees are within the boundaries of the Haram are sacrosanct, and should not be cut and no leaves or branches may be cut from them. Whatever is outside the boundaries of the Haram may be cut, even if a person is in ihraam. Based on this there is nothing wrong with cutting the trees in Arafaah… (With regard to trees that have been planted by people, they are not covered by the prohibition on cutting the trees in the Haram, but it may be haraam to cut them for another reason, namely transgressing the rights of the people who planted them, and transgressing the rights of the pilgrims too, if these trees were planted to reduce the heat and to shade people from the sun.

Based on this, it is not permissible to cut the trees that are planted in Arafah, not because of the Haram, but because cutting them is a transgression of the rights of all the Muslims).

6  :  Some pilgrims think that the mountain by which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood is holy and special, so they go to it and climb up it, and seek blessings from its stones and soil. They hang pieces of cloth from its trees, and do other things that are well known. These are innovations (bidah). It is not prescribed to climb the mountain or to pray there, or to hang pieces of cloth on its trees, because none of that was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Indeed, such things smack of idolatry, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by a tree of the mushrikeen on which they used to hang their weapons, and those who were with him said, “O Messenger of Allaah, make for us a Dhaat Anwaat [the name of the tree] like their Dhaat Anwaat.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Allaahu akbar! These are traditions and you are following the traditions of those who came before you. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you have spoken as the Children of Israel spoke to Moosa: ‘Make us a god as they have gods.’” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2180; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Sunnah li Ibn Abi ‘Aasim

This mountain is not holy, rather it is like any other hills in Arafah, and the valley in it. But the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood there, so it is prescribed to stand where the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood, if possible, but it is not obligatory, so no one has to make things difficult for himself by going there, for the reasons explained above.

7 :  Some people think that it is essential to pray Zuhr and Asr with the imam in the mosque, hence you see them going to that place from far away so that they can be with the imam in the mosque. This causes them a great deal of difficulty and many of them lose their way, which makes Hajj too hard for them, and they crowd one another and upset one another.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said concerning the standing,I am standing here, but all of ‘Arafah is the place of standing.” And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said: “The earth has been made a mosque (place of prayer) and a means of purification for me.”

So if a person prays in his tent in a calm and dignified manner, without being disturbed or disturbing others, and without trouble that makes Hajj too hard, that is better.

8 : Some of them leave Arafah before the sun sets, and go to Muzdalifah. This is a serious mistake, and is acting like the mushrikeen who used to leave Arafah before sunset. It is also going against the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) who did not leave Arafah until after the sun had set and the yellow afterglow had diminished somewhat, as it says in the hadeeth of Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him).

Based on this, pilgrims have to stay in Arafah, within its boundaries, until the sun sets, because this standing lasts until the sun sets; just as it is not permissible for a person who is fasting to break his fast before sunset, so it is not permissible for the one who is standing in Arafah to leave before the sun sets.

9 :  Wasting time in matters that are of no benefit. So you see people from the beginning of the day until the end engaged in conversations that may be innocent and free of gossip, or it may not be such, because they are slandering people’s honour and eating their flesh. If it is the latter then they are combining two haraam actions:

1-     Eating people’s flesh and backbiting about them.

This is a violation of the conditions of ihraam, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“So whosoever intends to perform Hajj therein (by assuming Ihraam), then he should not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj”

[al-Baqarah 2:197]

2-     Wasting time

Even if the talk is innocent and does not include anything haraam, it is still a waste of time, but there is nothing wrong with a person passing the time in innocent conversation before the sun reaches its zenith. But after the sun has passed its zenith and the people have prayed Zuhr and Asr, it is better to occupy oneself with duaa, dhikr and reading Quraan, and speaking beneficial words to ones brothers for a break from reading and dhikr. So he can say some useful words to them about some Islamic knowledge etc., that will make them feel happy, and give them hope of the mercy of Allaah. But he should make the most of the opportunity at the end of the day and occupy himself with duaa, beseeching Allaah and seeking His bounty and mercy, and persist in making duaa, and make of lot of duaa in the words narrated in the Qur’aan and saheeh Sunnah, for these are the best of duaas, and duaas offered at this time are more likely to be answered.

Mohsin Khan: 186:  You shall certainly be tried and tested in your wealth and properties and in your personal selves, and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the Scripture before you (Jews and Christians) and from those who ascribe partners to Allah; but if you persevere patiently, and become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - See V.2:2) then verily, that will be a determining factor in all affairs (and that is from the great matters which you must hold on with all your efforts).

Transliteration 187:  Waith akhatha Allahu meethaqa allatheena ootoo alkitaba latubayyinunnahu lilnnasi wala taktumoonahu fanabathoohu waraa thuhoorihim waishtaraw bihi thamanan qaleelan fabisa ma yashtaroona
Yusuf Ali 187:  And remember Allah took a covenant from the People of the Book, to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made!
Shakir 187:  And when Allah made a covenant with those who were given the Book: You shall certainly make it known to men and you shall not hide it; but they cast it behind their backs and took a small price for it; so evil is that which they buy.
Pickthal 187:  And (remember) when Allah laid a charge on those who had received the Scripture (He said): Ye are to expound it to mankind and not to hide it. But they flung it behind their backs and bought thereby a little gain. Verily evil is that which they have gained thereby.
Mohsin Khan: 187:  (And remember) when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) to make it (the news of the coming of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and the religious knowledge) known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it, but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And indeed worst is that which they bought.

Transliteration 188:  La tahsabanna allatheena yafrahoona bima ataw wayuhibboona an yuhmadoo bima lam yafAAaloo fala tahsabannahum bimafazatin mina alAAathabi walahum AAathabun aleemun

Shakir 188:  Do not think those who rejoice for what they have done and love that they should be praised for what they have not done-- so do by no means think them to be safe from the chastisement, and they shall have a painful chastisement.
Pickthal 188:  Think not that those who exult in what they have given, and love to be praised for what they have not done - Think not, they are in safety from the doom. A painful doom is theirs.
Mohsin Khan: 188:  Think not that those who rejoice in what they have done (or brought about), and love to be praised for what they have not done, - think not you that they are rescued from the torment, and for them is a painful torment.

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him)
Allah's Messenger (peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) as saying:

Allah has ninety-nine names,
i.e. one hundred minus one,

and whoever believes in their meanings
and acts accordingly,
will enter paradise;
and Allah is Witr (one)
and loves 'the Witr' (i.e. odd numbers).

(Sahih Bukhari ~ Book #75, Hadith #419)

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported
Allah's Messenger
(peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) as saying:

There are ninety-nine
names of Allah;
he who commits them to memory
would get into
paradise
.
Verily, Allah is Odd
(He is one, and it is an odd number)
and He loves odd number.

And in the narration of Ibn 'Umar (the words are):
"He who enumerated them."

(Sahih Muslim ~ Book #035, Hadith #6475)

Sura #3 | Madina

6
Transliteration 6:  Huwa allathee yusawwirukum fee alarhami kayfa yashao la ilaha illa huwa alAAazeezu alhakeemu
Yusuf Ali 6:  He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. There is no god but He, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Shakir 6:  He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He likes; there is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise
Pickthal 6:  He it is Who fashioneth you in the wombs as pleaseth Him. There is no Allah save Him, the Almighty, the Wise.
Mohsin Khan: 6:  He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He wills. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
Bosnian 6:  On vas oblikuje u matericama kako On hoće; nema boga osim Njega, Silnog i Mudrog!

Transliteration 7:  Huwa allathee anzala AAalayka alkitaba minhu ayatun muhkamatun hunna ommu alkitabi waokharu mutashabihatun faamma allatheena fee quloobihim zayghun fayattabiAAoona ma tashabaha minhu ibtighaa alfitnati waibtighaa taweelihi wama yaAAlamu taweelahu illa Allahu waalrrasikhoona fee alAAilmi yaqooloona amanna bihi kullun min AAindi rabbina wama yaththakkaru illa oloo alalbabi
Yusuf Ali 7:  He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding.
Shakir 7:  He it is Who has revealed the Book to you; some of its verses are decisive, they are the basis of the Book, and others are allegorical; then as for those in whose hearts there is perversity they follow the part of it which is allegorical, seeking to mislead and seeking to give it (their own) interpretation. but none knows its interpretation except Allah, and those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord; and none do mind except those having understanding.
Pickthal 7:  He it is Who hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture wherein are clear revelations - they are the substance of the Book - and others (which are) allegorical. But those in whose hearts is doubt pursue, forsooth, that which is allegorical seeking (to cause) dissension by seeking to explain it. None knoweth its explanation save Allah. And those who are of sound instruction say: We believe therein; the whole is from our Lord; but only men of understanding really heed.
Mohsin Khan: 7:  It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) the Book (this Qur'an). In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book [and those are the Verses of Al-Ahkam (commandments), Al-Fara'id (obligatory duties) and Al-Hudud (legal laws for the punishment of thieves, adulterers)]; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials), and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings save Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding. (Tafsir At-Tabari).
