I recently sent an email to the American Chestnut Assoc. or
something like that. No response yet so I decided to do a search on
groups.yahoo.
My name is Derek Burgess, our family lives off the west coast of
B.C. Canada on Salt Spring Island, we are a zone 9. We have 6 acres,
2 are cleared the rest is in brush and trees; (Alder, Douglas Fir,
Red cedar, Western Maple, Arbutus, etc.)
I am considering planting sweet Chestnuts on at least one acre but
not certain of the cultivar (American/Chinese cross or ?). I am
fascinated with the American Chestnut but have read that their small
size does not make them a very good cash crop and then there's the
blight - I doubt they've ever been grown here on our Island, does
isolation prevent blight? I'd like to plant a variety with
exceptional flavor and good size, grow them from seed if possible -
next years project.
Then there's the question of whether or not seeds can be shipped to
Canada. And what about a source for seeds so I can grow my own. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
