I have a young tree here, no more than 4 years old, that is blooming. A
bit precocious? I'm not complaining but my experience is that it
usually takes 7 to 10 years before they begin to bloom.Is this a rare
exception?

A hybrid could bloom in four years. I would be really surprised if you reply back saying it is pure Amerian. Usually the first year of bloom will be catkins...
