The Next time You Find Yourself in an Argument, Rather than Defend Your Position, See if You Can See the Other Point of View First

It's interesting to consider that when you disagree with someone, the person you are disagreeing with is every bit as certain of his or her position as you are of yours.  Yet we always take sides--ours!  This is our ego's way of refusing to learn anything new.  it's also a habit that creates a lot of unnecessary stress.

The first time I consciously tried the strategy of seeing the other point of view first, I found out something truly wonderful: It didn't hurt, and it brought me closer to the person with whom I was disagreeing.

Suppose a friend says to you, "Liberals (or conservatives) are the major cause of our social problems."  Rather than automatically defending your own position (whatever it is), see if you can learn something new.  Say to your friend, "Tell me why you think that's true."  Don't say this with a hidden agenda or in preparation to defend or prove your position, but simply to learn a different point of view.  Don't try to correct or make your friend see how he is wrong.  Let your friend have the satisfaction of being right.  Practice being a good listener.

Contrary to popular belief, this attitude does not make you weak.  It doesn't mean you aren't passionate about your beliefs, or that you're admitting that you're wrong.  You're simply trying to see another point of view--you're seeking first to understand.  It takes enormous energy to constantly prove a rigid position.  On the other hand, it takes no energy to allow someone else to be right.  In fact, it's outright energizing.

When you understand other positions & points of view, several wonderful things begin to happen.  First, you often learn something new.  You expand your horizons.  Second, when the person you are talking to feels listened to, he or she will appreciate & respect you far more than when you habitually jump in with your own position.  jumping in only makes him or her more determined & defensive.  Almost always, if you are softer, the other person with be softer too.  It might hot happen right away, but in time, it will.  By seeking first to understand, you are putting your love & respect for the person to whom you are speaking above your need to be right.  You are practicing a form of unconditional love.  A side benefit is that the person you are speaking to may even listen to your point of view.  While there is no guarantee that he will listen to you, one thing is guaranteed:  If you don't listen, he or she won't.  By being the first person to reach out and listen, you stop the spiral of stubbornness.

FOLLOW THE LORD’S WILL

Hillcrest Baptist Church, March 22, 2009

Isaiah 24:1—35:10

“Trust and Obey”

God had been very patient

With Judah for many years.

Yet, she disregarded warnings.

She just turned deaf ears.

The people still worshipped,

But their words were empty.

Their hearts were stone cold;

God’s truth they did not see.

Because of their wickedness

God would be patient no more.

Judgment would have to come.

They alone had shut the door.

The wisdom of the wise men

Would suddenly take leave.

Yet if the people would repent,

Forgiveness they could receive.

These foolish people of Judah

Thought their deeds were concealed.

Isaiah had given them warnings.

Nothing from God is concealed.

The rebellious people of Judah

Thought they were smarter than God.

Isaiah tried to awaken them

Before they felt the chastening rod.

Instead of trusting God,

They looked to Egypt for aid.

Without the Lord’s protection,

Their own plans were made.

They thought that fast horses

Would bring them victory.

But those who pursued them

Would be faster, running free.

God told the people of Judah,

“In returning shall ye be saved,

Quietness shall be your strength”

But by sin they were enslaved.

God predicted certain defeat

For this arrogant army.

He offered mercy to them,

But they were too blind to see.

Unless we follow God’s will,

Our efforts are sure to fail.

He has prepared our path,

Perfect in every detail.

Sometimes we are misguided,

As we try to do things our way.

When will we ever learn

To just trust and obey?

GIVE THANKS

Hillcrest Baptist Church, November 22, 2009

Psalm 116:1—19

“Thanks Be to God”

The writer of this psalm

Knew his prayer was heard.

He sang praises to God

For healing that had occurred.

The sorrows of death

Had pained his very soul.

He cried unto the Lord

To restore and make him whole.

God answered his prayer

And healed this troubled man.

Nothing is impossible

For God’s powerful hand!

In the midst of suffering,

The psalmist believed

That God is gracious.

Be not deceived.

God is merciful.

He honors a contrite heart.

Peace and wisdom

He is willing to impart.

The psalmist grew confident.

Now his fear was gone.

God’s loving favor

Had not been withdrawn.

Trust provided deliverance

From the writer’s distress.

His gratitude to God

He could not suppress.

The psalmist reminds us

That in God’s sight

His children are precious.

Their future is bright.

Are you a child of God?

Do you belong to Him?

He offers salvation with

Blessings filled to the brim.

Accept Jesus as your Savior.

He has paid sin’s debt.

Accept His invitation,

And you’ll have no regret!

HONOR THE LORD

Hillcrest Baptist Church, March 8, 2009

Isaiah 6: 1—13

“Send Me”

The year King Uzziah died

Isaiah had a vision,

Which was more astonishing

Than he could ever envision.

Isaiah saw the Lord seated

On His throne so high.

It was a wondrous sight,

Which Isaiah could not deny.

The train of God’s robe

Filled the temple with splendor.

Above were the seraphim,

Obedient in their surrender.

Each of the seraphim

Called out in praise.

“Holy, holy, holy”

Was their repeated phrase.

The cries of the seraphim

Rocked the very foundations.

Smoke also filled the scene

Of this divine revelation.

Isaiah became aware

Of his own sinfulness.

Being in God’s holy presence

Led him his sin to confess.

He was a man undone,

And he mourned over his sin.

Confessing that he was a sinner

Was the proper place to begin.

Isaiah’s wickedness was removed

When a seraph took a glowing coal

And placed it on Isaiah’s lips.

This purified and cleansed his soul.

God had a message to deliver,

And He said, “Who will go?”

“Send me,” Isaiah volunteered.

God’s message was one of woe.

Isaiah had a hard assignment,

But he would carry it through.

He knew God was calling him.

He knew what he must do.

Isaiah’s message was clear,

Judgment would take place.

God would spare a tenth;

The others would be displaced.

Despite the terrible destruction,

God offered hope for the nation.

He would heal and restore.

He would bring joy and salvation.

We can also honor the Lord

By being faithful and true.

We can obey and serve Him,

As our stubborn wills we subdue.

MEET DIVINE EXPECTATIONS

Hillcrest Baptist Church, March 1, 2009

Isaiah 1:1—5:30

“The Vineyard”

Isaiah was of royal blood;

He came from a priestly line.

God called him to a task

Which He alone designed.

Isaiah accused Judah

Of its wicked, sinful ways.

People of the land worshipped idols

Instead of giving God praise.

God turned a deaf ear

To their worship pretense.

He paid no attention

To their burnt incense.

If the people would repent,

God would heal and bless.

He was ready to forgive them

If their sins they would confess.

The land was full of corruption.

Their idols were worthless.

Judgment would surely come,

And there would be much distress.

The leaders and their wives

Were vain and greedy.

They paraded in finery,

Ignoring the cries of the needy.

Isaiah looked to the future

When the Messiah would appear.

He would bring forgiveness

To the ones who were sincere.

Isaiah sang of a vineyard

Planted on a fertile hill.

The Owner tended it with care

Because of His great skill.

He expected to see a good crop.

Instead wild grapes grew.

The Owner was disappointed.

What more could He do?

The Owner would let the vineyard

Become a wild wasteland.

No longer would it be nurtured

By the Owner’s loving hand.

Judah failed the expectations

Which God had set forth.

The people pursued other goals

Which were of no worth.

We must strive each day

To live only for the Lord.

His precepts are just.

They must not be ignored!

YOU CAN KEEP AT IT

Hillcrest Baptist Church, February 2, 2009

II Thessalonians 3:1—18

“Paul Perseveres”

In his letter to the Thessalonians,

Paul requested prayer

That the gospel would spread

Near, far, and everywhere.

Paul wanted the message

To circulate with speed.

Salvation for lost sinners

Is man’s greatest need.

Paul also sought deliverance

From wicked ones who fought

To stop him from conveying

God's message, which he brought.

Paul reminded friends in Christ

That God is always true.

He will strengthen all His children.

As He has promised to do.

Paul repeated to his readers

To live in a responsible way,

To withdraw from disorderly ones,

And not to be led astray.

Those who did not work

Caused problems for the others.

They became busybodies,

Meddling in the lives of their brothers.

Paul set an example for everyone.

He worked for his daily bread.

He did not depend on others;

He supported himself instead.

Paul encouraged all believers

To not grow weary or despair

But to continue in good deeds,

And God’s message gladly share.

Perseverance is our example.

In this we must excel.

It’s not enough to talk the talk,

We must walk the walk, as well!

YOU CAN STAY CALM

Hillcrest Baptist Church, February 15, 2009

II Thessalonians 2:1—17

“Calm and Confident”

Rumors in Thessalonica

Had caused a confused state.

Paul wrote them another letter

To set matters straight.

Believers did not understand

The details of Paul’s teaching.

So problems among them

Became many and far reaching.

Paul beseeched his friends

To not be shaken in mind.

His teaching was simple.

They didn’t need to be blind.

Paul wrote of the apostasy

Which would surely take place.

Believers will be secure

Because of God’s love and grace.

The man of lawlessness

Will be revealed.

His evil, destructive ways

Will no longer be concealed.

Believers need not be afraid.

They should remain calm.

The presence of God’s Spirit

Will be a soothing balm.

The Lord promised to destroy

The lawless, wicked one.

Christ coming in His glory

Will shine as brightly as the sun.

Thessalonian believers were safe,

Held in God’s own hand.

They had trusted in Jesus’ blood.

This was the way God planned.

Jesus is coming again!

Believers are not alarmed

Because God’s promises are real.

They will be safe, unharmed.

If you have not met Jesus,

Accept His gift today.

He offers salvation freely.

Trust Him without delay!

LIVE RIGHTEOUSLY

Hillcrest Baptist Church, November 15, 2009

Psalm 112:1—10

“A Heart for God”

Psalm one hundred twelve

Shows what we should be.

Righteous living

Must be our priority.

This psalm tells of blessings

That we can all receive

When we obey God

And His word believe.

Our attitude toward God

Entails reverence and awe.

God’s commandments are just,

Without one single flaw.

The righteous man delights

In all of God’s laws.

He submits to God’s will

With never a moment’s pause.

His light shines forth;

He is full of compassion.

He deals fairly with others.

Obedience is his passion.

The upright man’s life

Will be steady and sure.

Bad news he will accept.

Difficulties he can endure.

He will not be afraid

When trouble comes around.

He is committed to God.

His foundation is sound.

Freely and willingly

He gives to the poor.

Their needs and troubles

He cannot ignore.

The wicked man sees

The just man’s success.

He is filled with envy.

He is sick with distress.

The desires of the wicked

Will prove empty and vain.

His dreams will become dust,

Full of regret and pain.

As believers, we need

To be absolutely sure

That our lives reflect

Values honest and pure.

Believers do not need

To live in needless fear.

In every situation,

God is always near.

YOU CAN FEEL SAFE

Hillcrest Baptist Church, February 8, 2009

II Thessalonians 1:1—12

”More than Fair”

Paul sends warm greetings

To his Thessalonian friends.

He encourages all of them.

Their faith he also commends.

The faith of these believers

Was growing day by day.

They abounded in love,

As they went along the way.

Though persecution was great,

They managed to endure.

Their trust was in God.

Their direction was sure.

Paul wanted others to see

Their faith was very strong.

They determined to be true.

They tried to do no wrong.

Believers endured patiently

The suffering and distress.

They knew that someday

They would be richly blessed.

In the Day of Judgment

God will settle the score.

Evildoers will be punished.

Their sins He will not ignore.

By doing good deeds in love,

God’s glory is displayed.

We must trust God always

And follow plans He has made.

God has been more than fair

By saving us from sin.

He extends His grace

So we may be pure within.

During troubling times,

We can feel secure.

God is always in control.

He gives us strength to endure.

DO YOU GET ALONG WITH OTHERS?

Hillcrest Baptist Church, February 1, 2009

I Thessalonians 5:12—28

“Work Together”

Paul shared wise advice

On getting along with others.

We can relate to everyone,

Not just our Christian brothers.

Paul emphasized that

We must show respect

To our church leaders

This is what God expects.

Our duty, as Christians,

Is to encourage our pastor.

He has a stressful calling,

As he seeks to serve the Master.

Pastors, as well as members,

Should live in joy and peace.

This brings sweet harmony,

And causes quarrels to cease.

Paul exhorts believers

To be patient with all men.

We must be forgiving,

Time and time again.

Encouraging the timid,

And helping the weak

Should be our privilege,

As God’s will we seek.

We must not quench the Spirit,

For He leads not astray.

Hold on to the good.

Avoid evil each day.

Whatever our situation,

We must always pray,

Being thankful to God,

As we walk in His way.

Getting along with others

Is not that hard to do.

Follow Paul’s guidelines.

They are simple and true.

: Fallen soldier!!

  Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home.
Trickling Down His Face A Tear,
Forgetting How It Feels To Fear
Death And All It's Fate And Glory.
Now It's Here, No Need To Worry.

Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home
He's One Of Those They'll All Forget;
The Life He Lived, The Goals He Set,
The Ones He Loved, The Ones Who Wait
To See His Nearly Forgotten Face.

Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home
Now Breathing's Just A Waste Of Breath
And Living's Just A Waste Of Death
As He Searches For A New Address;
A Brand New Home Free Of Loneliness.

Fallen Soldier All Alone
Fallen Soldier Far From Home
Lying Motionless On The Ground,
The Battle Raging All Around.
For Now He Is Not All Alone.
This Fallen Soldier Is Welcomed Home.

: The U in Jesus

Simply beautiful!!!

THE U IN JESUS

Before U were thought of or time had begun,
God stuck U in the name of His Son.

And each time U pray, you'll see it's true,
You can't spell out JesUs and not include U.

You're a pretty big part of His wonderful name,
For U, He was born; that's why He came.

And His great love for U is the reason He died.
It even takes U to spell crUcified.

Isn't it thrilling and splendidly grand
He rose from the dead, with U in His plan?

The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew,
and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U.

When JesUs left earth at His upward ascension,
He felt there was one thing He just had to mention.

'Go into the world and tell them it's true
That I love them all - Just like I love U.'

So many great people are spelled with a U,
Don't they have a right to know JesUs too?

It all depends now on what U will do,
He'd like them to know,
But it all starts with U.

Will YOU pass it on.

ARE YOU READY?

Hillcrest Baptist Church, January 25, 2009

I Thessalonians 5:1-11

“The Day of the Lord”

Paul reminded the Thessalonians

Of truths that he had taught.

Jesus was coming again,

But they must not be distraught.

The Day of the Lord will come

Like a thief in the night.

Those who are prepared

Will welcome it with delight.

People who are clinging

To a false type of security

Will be judged by the Lord,

Who will see their impurity.

Humanity will be divided

Into two exclusive classes.

On one side will stand believers,

On the other, the lost masses.

Believers must remain sober,

Wearing the helmet of salvation.

They must have faith and love,

As they make preparation.

Believers are to be like

Light that shines in the day.

They have accepted Jesus,

Who is the Truth, the Way.

Unbelievers are like darkness

That comes when it is night.

They have rejected Jesus.

They refused the way of light.

Nobody knows just when

Jesus will return again,

But we know He will appear.

He will establish his reign.

The Day of the Lord should

Hold no fear for anyone

Who has accepted Christ,

Jesus, our hope, God’s Son.

(SRH…1/23/09)

“Behold, he cometh with

the clouds; and every eye

shall behold him: and all

kindreds of the earth

shall wail because of him.”

(Revelation 1:7)
