Our battles with the plagiarists have led me to feel
the same way - very hesitant to post stuff online that
hasn't already been published in hardcopy. At this
point I'm assuming that anything of any merit that I
post online will wind up being stolen in some form or
another.

It's just kind of frustrating, though...that technically the copyright is automatic, but when it comes down to legal action it doesn't seem to do much good....
