Newsletter 1/31/2001 by Linda Formichelli
http://www.badads.org/newsletter14.shtml I (Linda) just finished
writing an article on
pink contracts for Wired magazine. Pink contracts are
secret spammer-friendly contracts offered by Internet
Service Providers in exchange for "risk fees" as high as
$27,000. What this means is that while if a spammer
promises to pay enough, the ISP won't disconnect them for
spamming and consumers' complaints about unwanted spam
will be deliberately
ignored. One spammer I
interviewed claimed to have pink contracts with five major
ISPs, including AT&T and PSINet. An associate of the
spammer claims to have pink contracts with 14 major ISPs.
And the anti-spam organization The Spamhaus Project
has just uncovered a pink contract at UUNET (though
he's investigating to find out whether this contract
had actually been signed). Technically, these
spammers aren't violating their ISPs' acceptable use
policies; the contracts don't allow spammers to
actually
send bulk e-mail through the ISPs ' servers, but they
do promise, in exchange for the risk fees, not to
take down Web sites advertised through bulk e-mail.
Internet Service Providers pretend to be on your side in
the fight against intrusive spam, but in reality,
many of them are only too willing to sell out your
inbox for a buck. And at the same time that they're
contributing to the spam problem, two to five dollars of your
monthly ISP bill goes towards fighting spam in the form
of abuse desk staff and
filtering systems. It
seems they can have their cake and eat it too. You can
see copies of the recently-outed pink contracts here:
AT&T
http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=688308927&fmt=text
PSI
http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=690756232&fmt=text Don't sit
still for this kind of abuse from ISPs.
If your ISP is in the list below, please write them
a letter to ask them not to support spammers on
their system. Tell them that their sales staff should
be educated to not intentionally do business
with
spammers. To learn how to write a complaint letter, visit
http://www.badads.org/letter.shtml . And don't forget that if you
send a copy of
your letter to us at info@..., you'll have a
chance to win a cool advertising-free, logo-free BadAds
T-shirt. Remember, the BadAds site isn't there for
educational purposes only--its purpose is to help consumers
take action against intrusive advertising.

Excellent, the key seems to be to have an
organized campaign. To hit one spammer at a time with as
many wasted calls as possible in a short time. They
will think they hit pay dirt, only to end with dirt
pay. After a long, long conversation, they must know
that the reason why they are being "phone-bombed" is
the spam. The payphone bit will be tricky. Maybe
calling from work is the answer.

I have heard that some people use a hand held
programmable auto dialer
from payphones. In the ANI
(different then caller ID) sent with 800#
calls there is
an extra digit indicating a payphone. Some companies
know
this and reject payphone calls. Remember they always
can see what number
you are calling from. I have
heard of the payphone surcharges causing
some
spammers to disconnect their 800#.

Oh my, it is nice to know that there are people
out there who are really serious about this. In the
future people will view this kind of stuff as a kind of
war. We view economic trends as a form of warfare with
tarriff walls and such. So, pretty soon, I suspect that
we will consider all this phreaking and hacking as a
form of guerilla information war.

With regard
to the caller ID info, they can't all recognize
payphones, right? I mean out of a list of a hundred numbers,
there have to be some that don't have that software.
But even if all my plan does is force them to buy
that software (or steal it more likely as spammers are
not known for their consideration of other peoples
hard work) at least I will have forced that expense on
them, right?

I currently have my spam filters
set to route all spam with 1-800, 1-877, or 1-888 to
a special folder. I will have a huge list before
too long (there have to be several hundred there
already).

Toll free #'s don't get caller ID. They
get
[A]utomatic
[N]umber
[I]dentification
which is different. They
may get it on thier
bill
when it comes in *OR* the will get it live as calls
comes in SIMILAR
to Caller ID. But it is different.
9-1-1 systems also get
ANI instead of CID. They may
also get ALI which
is
Automatic
Location
Indentification
which give the ADDRESS of the
caller.
It is always
best to call spammers' 800#s from
payphone. The ANI
from those payphone will have an extra digit to ID
calls from
Prisons
Hotels
regular public
payphones.
The recipient, who is payin for the incoming call
after all,
can set up system to refuse any and all
calls from
pay phone.
BUT I have found only a FEW
that do that. If you called
them over and over
again, EACH call would cost them
c. 25 cents or so.
If you went to a large bank of
payphone at a bus
depot or airport and had a handheld
auto dialer, you
could dial at each payphne. Some would get
a busy
after first call, but spammers that have a bunch of
answrring machines on a bunch of line will get charged over
and over again.
I am explaining the theory here,
nit saying "go out and do it". But some
people
have done this in the past.

any chance to hang out down at the bus station is
worth it!

It would be an interesting experiment,
but in order for this to function on a large scale,
it's the kind of thing that alot of people would have
to do. It would have to be a dusguised sort of thing
to. You want to talk to the people as long as
possible without actually buying anything, cause it's the
people that cost the money.

Am I to understand
