Hi All - I am beginning the search for summer internships for
students in our MS-Demography program. Once again I seek the
assistance of everyone on the Applied Demography list in finding
opportunities for this new group of young professionals in our
field. Our effort to increase enrollment has been successful. We
have 16 students in the program, which is triple our average over the
past twenty years. This creates more pressure to find challenging
and high quality internships, so I am beginning an active search now
rather than waiting to January as usual.
Our students are very skilled and highly motivated. I feel sure we
can get the set of technical skills and personal qualities almost any
organization would need. Of course, we and they prefer paid
internships, particularly since relocation will most likely be required.
If your organization has data the students could analyze for you and
also use for their MS papers here at FSU, this would be great from
all points of view. Mentoring by professionals in an applied project
is key to their future development.
Most of the students entered our one year program this past August,
and they are scheduled to complete all requirements for the MS degree
in August 2010. Internships provide for a de facto 13 week job
interview; also great for all concerned.
There are no hard and fast dates regarding timing, but the sooner the
better for all concerned.
Let me know if there are any possibilities. I am of course very
happy to talk with anyone about details or questions. Many of our
students will be attending the Southern Demographic Association
meetings in Galveston next week, and this is a great opportunity to
meet them. I will be attending, too.
Thanks.
