On behalf of the Asian Fisheries Society Council, it is with deep sadness and regret that we inform AFS members and friends that our beloved President Prof. Dr. Yang Yi passed away on July 3, 2009 due to illness. We will always remember Yang Yi as a young man, full of life and ideas, enthusiastic and dedicated to the strengthening of AFS and its ideals. His death is a great loss to us. Let us pray for his eternal repose.
For you information we are posting the Obituary from SHOU (Shanghai Ocean University).

Prof Dr Yang Yi's untimely demise is a great loss to Asian Fisheries Society and to many of his friends in fisheries and aquaculture in this region including many young scientists in the field who always scan 'AquaFish CRSP Educational/Employment Opportunities' news which Dr Yang Yi has been, very earnestly and promptly circulating by email for many years (stopped in February this year probably due to his illness) as a kind of service component in his career. I also remember his wonderful and convincing presentation on 'Tilapia aquaculture for India' some years back in AFS Indian Branch meeting at Bangalore, India. He even willingly sent many of his PPT slides on tilapia for my use. we just dont understand why a promising life of such an enthusiastic scientist should be snatched at such a young age .
Heart-felt condolence to the grieving family and friends.

I’m sending this message on behalf of Peter Rogers Chairman of Lobster Harvest.
We are looking for information on nutritional value and profiles of Molluscs such as Mussels, Clams, Pippi’s, and the like in Malaysia and Thailand with some understanding of seasonal variation in nutritional quality. It is intended to use these Molluscs fresh as food stock for lobster larvae. Are you able to please give us some guidance on where this may be obtained ? e.g references or researchers or institutes.
Any assistance that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Peter sends his best wishes and is copied in on this e-mail.

I wish to thank the Council for its trust and confidence when they
elected me to assume the position of President of AFS, following the
untimely passing away of our beloved President Yang Yi. My acceptance
of the responsibility demanded by this position is mainly because I
know that the Council will extend its support as we all pursue the
mission and activities of AFS in the next 14 months. I thank the
members who likewise have sent in their kind notes of congratulations
and good will. I will do my best in meeting the challenges of this
position, with your help and cooperation.
Let us, both Council and the General Membership, renew our resolve
to make AFS a vibrant organization, committed to promoting cooperation
and knowledge sharing among scientists and technicians in fisheries and
aquaculture research and sustainable development in Asia.
I look forward to seeing many of you participate in the
forthcoming major activity this coming Nov. 26-30, 2009 for the
International Symposium for Aquaculture and Fisheries Education (ISAFE)
at AIT, Bangkok. This is a joint undertaking of AFS, AIT and Shanghai
Ocean University. Please help us disseminate the information and
encourage participation. The details are posted in the AFS website.
Please feel free to communicate with me, the Council, or our
Executive Officer, Mariati, for any concerns and suggestions you may
have to make AFS a responsive and excellent organization. We will
continue to keep you updated on ongoing and new activities in the next
coming weeks.

This is to announce that Michael New (AFS Member), who was given the OBE in
1999 (a royal award in the UK) for his services to aquaculture in developing
countries, has been awarded the World Aquaculture Society Exemplary Service
Gold Medal. This honour, which was conferred at the World Aquaculture 2009
meeting in Veracruz, Mexico on 26 September 2009, has been awarded only
ten times in the 40 years history of the Society and has only been
conferred on one other European. Michael New is also the founder
of the international NGO Aquaculture without Frontiers.
About the
WAS award (background information from the World Aquaculture Society website):
The
Exemplary Service Gold Medal is conferred upon any individual who has made
extensive contributions that have significantly altered the nature or direction
of the (World Aquaculture) Society. Hard work and dedicated service do not in
themselves qualify an individual for this award. The recipient must have
demonstrated a vision of what the Society should be and have displayed the
resolve, influence and dedication necessary to change the nature or direction
of the Society. The award shall be a gold medal carrying the logo of the
original World Aquaculture Society. The maximum number of Exemplary Service
Awards given should be one every three years.
AFS extends a hearty congratulation on his outstanding achievement.
Congratulations!
Sincerely yours,
Ms. Mariati Tiansin Executive Officer Asian Fisheries Society c/o Laboratory Marine Science and Aquaculture Institute of Bioscience Universiti Putra Malaysia 43400 UPM Serdang, Selangor MALAYSIA

Greetings! Starting from today, the Secretariat office will be closed in conjunction with the Asian Pacific Aquaculture Conference 2009 (AQUAPAC 2009). The AFS Executive Officer will be at the conference venue as part of the local organizing committee.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all AFS member to renew/ update your membership status at the Booth No. 47.

I am delighted to inform you that I have today had confirmation that the WAS Asia-Pacific Conference (WAS-APC) will be held in Kochi ( Cochin ), India from 17-21 January 2011. The technical session dates for the WAS conference are 19-21 January.
Kochi, besides being a significant centre of Indian aquaculture, is a fascinating and beautiful tourist destination.
I am therefore able to start planning the details of Giant Prawn 2011, which will form a significant component of the WAS-APC event. In doing so, I will be working with my great friends and colleagues in the Kerala Agricultural University .
Here are
some provisional details for Giant Prawn 2011:
Currently, I intend to organise a three day technical meeting (session days 19-21 January 2011) covering every aspect of freshwater prawn farming, with an additional opportunity to visit local prawn farms (Kerala is an important Macrobrachium farming area), provisionally on 22 January 2011. I hope to provide keynote speakers on each topic (hatchery, grow-out, nutrition, health. etc.) and there will be opportunities for submitted papers on each topic.
Participants will need to register in the normal way for the WAS-APC meeting. Further details of the parent meeting will become available from WAS in due course. There will be no additional fee for attending Giant Prawn 2011, as it will be a component session of the parent event. However, there will be a charge for attending the post-conference tour(s), as normal.
Participants who wish to present oral or
poster papers in Giant Prawn 2011 will be required to submit their abstracts to WAS in the normal manner, clearly marking them as destined for the Giant Prawn 2011 session. Details about this process will become available later. At the moment, I anticipate that each presenter of an oral paper will have fifteen minutes to present, plus five minutes for questions. I would like to emphasise that, as in all WAS meetings, time-keeping will be controlled by session chairs, who will be expected to be very strict. No speaker will be allowed to continue after 20 minutes.
I will keep you informed as our plans mature. Meanwhile, I would be grateful if you would please put GIANT PRAWN 2011 (17-22 January 2011) firmly into your diaries now. I hope to see you in Kochi !
It would be useful if you would let me know if you will be planning to join us in Giant Prawn 2011. I do hope so, although I must apologise that I do
not have access to any travel funds for you.
I would also be grateful if you would publicise this information as widely as possible, so that we can make this meeting another landmark (as was Giant Prawn 1980 in Bangkok ) in the expansion of freshwater prawn farming. Please ask anyone that is interested in attending Giant Prawn 2011 to contact me (new.macrobrachium@...)

Dear all
I need asssitance for larval rearing of P .mergueinsis
I am culturing shrimp P. merguiensis for research work. The difficulty that I
am facing is that although I am having success in spawning and hatching, but
once they are transfer to larval tank their survival starts decreasing and by
the time they reach Mysis 1, they are very few left. Here is the procedure that
I am following:
The water I am using is chlorinated and dechlorinated after 24hrs.
The female shrimps of light green to green ovary are brought and kept in
maturation tanks. They are being fed fresh squid and fresh mussel and when they
get fully matured , they are shifted to spawning tanks.
In the spawning tank with 150 L seawater, I am adding 10 ppm EDTA (usually 4
spawning tanks are used).
After spawning the shrimp is removed and the eggs are left in the tank
The spawning is good as the hatching nauplii reach an average of 2,00,000 in
numbers (almost 60-70% hatching).
After two and half days when they are N5 or Z1, they are shifted to larval tank.
At the time of shifting the nauplii are very active.
In the larval tank I start with 2,000 L water. Feed them algae and Zoea larval
feed accordingly and at late protozoea, artemia as well.
From day 2 exchange of 50% water also starts in larval tank, which is gradually
increase to 80% exchange. The volume of water in larval tank is also increased
gradually.
The water quality parameters are also stable and within the limits. The temp. is
28 C plus minus but the salinity is 43-45 ppt. This is the salinity of water in
the lagoon where these shrimps are surviving well in their natural habitat and
we are taking the water from same lagoon.
With the passage of time their number reduces and finally very few left and I
have to stop continuing work.
Thank you

The water quality parameters are also stable and within the limits. The temp. is 28 C plus minus but the salinity is 43-45 ppt. This is the salinity of water in the lagoon where these shrimps are surviving well in their natural habitat and we are taking the water from same lagoon.
With the passage of time their number reduces and finally very few left and I have to stop continuing work.
Need assistance if anyone can guide for larval rearing of P. merguiensis.
I am culturing shrimp P. merguiensisfor research work. The difficulty that I am facing is that although I am having success in spawning and hatching, but once they are transfer to larval tank their survival starts decreasing and by the time they reach Mysis 1, they are very few left. Here is the procedure that I am following:
The water I am using is chlorinated anddechlorinated after 24hrs.
The female shrimps of light green to green ovary are brought and keptin maturation tanks. They are being fed fresh squid and fresh mussel and when they get fully matured , they are shifted to spawning tanks.
In the spawning tank with150 Lseawater, I am adding 10 ppm EDTA (usually 4 spawning tanks are used).
After spawning the shrimp is removed and the eggs are left in the tank
The spawning is good as the hatching nauplii reach an average of 2,00,000 in numbers (almost 60-70% hatching).
After two and half days when they are N5 or Z1, they are shifted to larval tank.
At the time of shifting the nauplii are veryactive.

AFS and the Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), the
convener of 9AFAF is pleased to announce that the 9th AFAF will be held in SHOU on 21st -25th April 2011. This is some six months
behind our original schedule for the forum. We hope
that this slight delay will challenge all members to plan and prepare better
for their participation in a successful 9AFAF in 2011. The delay is also
a blessing for some members as the current global financial crisis should ease
further in 2011 and we hope will allow more members to successfully seek
funding to attend our triennial forum.
AFS will keep you posted of
details once the appropriate Call for Conference will be issued through AFS
website and the forum website: www.9afaf.org
