Trust me, it's a pain in the culo!
It started happening not long after moving in to this unit (rental). It
had been renovated by a young couple who bought the unit. Prior to them,
an old couple had lived there. The old man was the butcher in the area
and he died first. The old lady lived there quite a while afterwards.
Apparently they were a nice couple. Anyhoo...
There were copious nails in the walls in the garage. Like, how many
tools could the old guy possibly have had?
There were too many to be safe moving around so I pulled a whole bunch
out. About three weeks into living here, I heard a strange tapping near
the bed head. It was kind of rhythmic, but I thought, "probably the
house contracting in the cold or something". I ignored it.
Then I heard it a few times since. A couple of weeks after that I hear
it early one morning and figure it might be mice or possums or something
in the wall. Though it sounded like a typewriter. Weird.
Then a week or so later I wake in the morning and hear it again, only
this time I start actually taking notice. It sounded like it was coming
from the bed head or side table next to my side of the bed. I'm
listening.... Then I notice a pattern to the annoying tapping sound. It
was morse code for SOS. .. --- ... ... --- ... I ask Karen if she can
hear the noise and she says yes, she heard it Saturday before. I'm like
"It's an SOS signal". WTF? So we switch on the lights and it stops. We
hunt around the house trying to find where the noise is coming from.
Couldn't find it. Went back to bed then it started again. In the end I
slept, feeling awful that someone may be banging pipes somewhere and
trapped (like those Austrian daughters of that nutter recently in the news).
The next day I tell a guy at work about it. He said maybe it is the
radio-clock next to my bed and it is picking up someone's mobile signal.
I said it went for over fifteen minutes. Still, the next time I heard
it, I pulled the clock plug out. It started again regardless.
Now here's the irritating thing. The tapping is not always SOS but it is
perfectly rhythmic with a number of rhythms. It starts quietly and gets
louder to the point of irritation. I know it's from the garage wall now.
If there is tapping and I turn my head to look towards the side table,
the noise stops instantly. If I close my eyes and pretend to sleep it
starts again relatively quickly.
One night I tried to feel if it was the bed head being tapped. I knew if
I moved my head to look it would stop. So I laid on my stomach with my
hands under the pillow. When the tapping started I slowly slid my had
towards the bed head. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as my hand met the
cold air the noise stopped. I did this on several occasions.
This morning was even more irritating. I lay on my right side and the
tapping was irritating. Everytime I opened my eyes it stopped. As soon
as I closed them it started. So this time I got pissed off and banged on
the wall three times. It stopped. It started an hour or two later though.
Another side effect is that everynow and then we can hear cupboard doors
opening and closing in the kitchen. Yep, there are heaps of those too,
from ceiling to floor.
A week ago when I figured it was hammering nails by the sound and some
rhythms, I did an experiment. I went into the garage and tapped a nail
into the wall whilst Karen was in the bedroom. She said it was that
sound spot on.
My friends and I (we're all IT geeks) want to set up infra-red web cams
that detect movement in the garage. Maybe even the kitchen would be good.
Still, I'm thinking of APing and sorting this annoying prick of a ghost
out. The tapping is definitely an exercise in aggravating the living.
We'll see what happens next. So far it is localised in the garage and
kitchen but the light in the WC is beginning to tap aswell.
We exhausted all rational explanations, especially since it behaves in a
way that it is like we are being watched.
I'm soooo over having a ghost already!
