i think the ideal scope is the orion short tube 80 (80mm/f5) and it's on sale last check for $159. you can put it on a camera tripod and just look at stuff....

of course how could you beat one of the dobs from orion -- the 6 inch is $239, and the 8 is $100 more. i like my ST 80 tho as my quick scope -- it's lighter...
