Hi,
Does anyone know what happened to the transparency forecast on the
Clear Sky Clock site? Its telling me there is no data from CMC. Is this
only a temporary problem? I use the transparency reading a lot.

Hi Constantinos,

Predicting if fog will be a problem or not can be obvious on some nights
and not so obvious on others in my experience. Local climate and geography
plays strongly into the equation along with seasonal variances in air
temperature, relative humidity, and the amount of air movement related to
any specific site. As I expect you already know.

Personal experience with what your area has been like historically will
probably be your best tool for predicting what to expect in the future. If
you are new to this area, perhaps you can find archived infrared (or fog
band) satellite images that will provide you with some information as to
typical trends for different times of the year. Or draw on the experiences
of those that have lived and observed in or near your town.

Fog, if dense enough, will show clearly on IR loops. Lighter fog can be
harder to detect on those images and you have to differentiate it from the
radiational cooling of the ground itself which also has a milky appearance
on IR loops. However, ground cooling does not show any movement or drifting
along the edges typically.

Best of luck with your project!

Chuck Dethloff

Hello to everyone in the list,

My name is Constantinos Emmanouilidis and I'm writing from Ionia
Thessaloniki Hellas. I own a personal observatory which is dedicated
to Supernova search and established a team of observers that compare
the images for something new in them. You can see more at:

www.amateur-astronomy.gr

I have seen an article at Sky & Telescope about Sky Clock in the past
and it looked very interesting. Unfortunately this is available only
for US. Now I'm trying to figure out a way to predict weather since is
very important for planning the observations and though I have found
one or two ways, I'd like to see what I'm missing since sometimes
things go exactly the opposite way!

So far I'm supporting my predictions to satellite images and a site
called Meteoblue. Unfortunately they don't always hit the target so
I'm trying to find alternatives.

Would there be some hints to avoid foggy weather were nothing shows on
the satellite images? this is just an example of the things that
happens here...

Best regards
Constantinos Emmanouilidis

Hi Curt.

The clock for Papa Tom's has a grandiose name, but it's a one person's
private observatory. That person asked me to turn on "location privacy" for
that clock because he wanted me to not display his exact location. Location
privacy turns off display of latitudes/longitudes, locations on maps and a
whole bunch of other web features on my pages that might subtly reveal a
sites exact location.

So if you're asking:

- because you want to know if the clock is close enough to your location to
give you accurate forecasts: let me know your exact lat/long (or email me a
link to the right googlemaps page) and I'll check.

-because you'd like to contact "Papa Tom": send me an email addressed to him
and I'll forward it.

If you want to do either, it's probably best if you use private email to me
at danko at pobox dot com, rather than replying to this post.

Thank you. Needless to say getting official support was a huge relief.

Hi Becky,

Actually, the clock is located at N39.7572 W90.98028 which is the same
coordinates as
N39,45,26 W90,58,49.

If you read the coordiantes off the lighpollution map by clicking on a
pixel, worry not: the
lightpollution coordiantes are approximate. The clock's coordinates are
accurate.

Hi Attilla

Just a quick question. A friend noticed the coord were off for the
clock for me.(Heavens Gate Farm Observatory) Can they be changed? This
is listed under the light polution map. If they can here is what is
listed:

N39.752, W90.965

this is what it should be

N39,45,26 W90,58,49

Thanks

Hi Becky,

I've just tried clicking on several colored blocks on the clock for Heavens
Gate Farm observatory. They all worked fine for me.

Hmm. What could be the problem?

If you have a slow link to the internet, the full map take about 30 second
to appear. (They actuall load last, after everything else on the page.) It
might also be necessary it hit "reload" once.

If that's not the problem, then it's possible a bug in my page is confusing
your browser. What browser, and browser version are you using?

Hi Florian,

I'm not sure that Cinzano's light pollution maps cover Hawaii. Neither his
map of Oceana
http://www.inquinamentoluminoso.it/worldatlas/pages/fig9.htm
or his map of the world:
http://www.inquinamentoluminoso.it/download/mondo_ridotto0p25.gif
seems to cover Hawaii. I dont knwo what other of his maps Hawaii would be
on.

Hello Attilla and all...

I'm visiting Hawaii with my family in August. In doing a little pre-trip
scouting one of my first thoughts was to check some Hawaiian Clear Sky Clocks! I
then realized that the Canadian weather base maps don't cover Hawaii thus no
CSCs for the state of course. But that led to a second thought... Is there
coverage for Hawaii for the light pollution maps? Ideally, i'd like to download
the Google Earth light pollution overlay klm file. Attilla, would it be possible
for you to create a Hawaiian overlay even if you don't have any clocks in the
state?

I respond to most requests the same day I receive them.

This is the first I've heard of your request for a clock. Either I
never got your email or my spam filter was over-ambitious.

In anycase, here is a clock for your observatory:

I suggest you try the "topo map" link on that page to check that the
clock is setup in the right place.

Hi Mr Danko

How long does it take to get a clear sky clock. Im asking only because
I have sent info a month ago but no answer yet. I live in Beverly
Ill and there isnt one near me plus I teach the girlscouts and am
going to build my own observatory. The info I sent you was named
Beverly but can it be changed to "Heavens Gate Farm" which will be
the name on the observatory. I used to live near Chicago Ill and used
one all the time. I miss having one I can use.

Thank you for the clocks they are great.

Mark Casazza already has an email service to alert people of good observing
as predicted by clear sky clocks. You can choose from a number of
detail levels in the alert email. Possibly one is terse enough to be
appropriate for cell phone email.

Even if Mark does not currently have one terse enough, Mark is the guy
to ask. He already reads the machine-readable clear sky clocks that I
generate, so it should be easy for him to create micro text-only
emails for clear sky clock notices.

I am looking for weather forecasting software that will enable for me
to load past data via text or xls files and give me a forecast. I will
not be using a weather station. Jeff

Quanzhi Ye, an amateur astronomer in China, has been inpsired by
the clear sky clocks to create a transparency and cloud cover
forecaster using GFS data which covers the entire planet.

Attilla,

I don't know which fields you are looking for the GFS but in general it
is among the 5 bests long range weather models. It is a spectral type
model which has good scores and it is reliable. In short term, it is very
ofter better than NAM (GFS and NAM are both U.S. operational weather
models). We (at CMC) daily look always at the GFS seriously to see
how it compares to our Global (long range model) model. Both, global and
GFS are comparable but they remain a low resolution type weather models,
good to give tendancy but not detailed forecasts as our GEM-regional (used
in CSC... 15km horizontal resolution) and NAM (12km resolution).

Anyone have an opinion as two how useful the GFS weather model is
for forecasting observing conditions?

No problem Attilla... I am happy you did it. I was just thinking to unplug
my old web site next week (for technical reasons) and give the news at the
same time...
