Barring any more heating problems (!), we will continue our
shootout of the 3 most popular e-mail programs (Outlook,
Outlook Express, and Eudora) tonight.

And if you like Spam, go to Spamarama this weekend… but if you
don't like the other kind, we'll show you how to fire back
too.

When and where:

Wednesday 03/26/03, 6:30 – 8:30 P.M.
Old Quarry Library, 7051 Village Center Dr.

Sorry, but there won't be any shootout tonight. The Old Quarry
library does not have any heat!

If you know anyone who might have planned to attend but is not on
this list, please pass the word.

Thanks,
Mike

After a little minor technical difficulty, we had a great shootout
last month of the 3 most popular e-mail programs (Outlook, Outlook
Express, and Eudora) with lots of spectators with lots of great
questions!

With so much to cover, we couldn't cover it all in 1 session, so
we will continue to shoot it out again tonight. We should be all
thawed out by then hopefully!

Speaking of shooting it out, how would you like to fire back at
spammers? We will also demo a free, easy to use program that let's
you delete spam before it gets to your inbox AND get your address off
many mailing lists too!

So come get'cha a good seat behind a sandbag watch what happens!

Topics for this month's Internet SIG meeting:

News and Q & A – What's happening in cyberspace and anything
you want to discuss

Sync – See the easiest way yet to keep your information up to
date on various devices – changing it only once.

** Email Shootout **

Should you buy Outlook? Or will Outlook Express do what you need?
Or is Eudora – one of the longest lasting e-mail programs on the
Internet - right for you? Chances are even if you're already
using one, you may not know what you're missing in the others.

Guest presenter Jimmy Hill, Joe, and I will have all 3 programs open
at once and will switch between them so that you can see and compare
how each program handles a given task or feature!

I'll bet each of you knows someone that could benefit from this -
especially in this shootout format – so tell `em not to miss
it.

Does God Exist in my E-mail Filter?

Tonight's topics for the Internet SIG:

Not even George Jetson got his news this way!

Do all your clocks have the same time? More importantly, do all your
computers know the same things?

Trying to prove the existence of God has led to an e-mail filter that
learns what YOU think is worth keeping!

Bargain shopping sites, a new travel site, and more.

** Be sure to note the changed location (for tonight only).

Here comes another session with a mixture of ingredients… kinda
like the homemade soup I had last night!

We'll begin with the usual announcements, news, and Q&A. If there is
something about browsers, e-mail, etc. that you want to discuss,
please do – invariably, these conversations help more than just
you!

Keyboard shortcuts seem to be in demand, so I'll talk about one that
can be useful when browsing the web.

We have discussed branching out a bit into PDAs, especially in
combination with cell phones and Internet access. Joe is going
to bravely go where SIG has not gone before and give an overview of
Palm features, what distinguishes it from the Pocket PC, and demo
the Kyocera Smartphone.

We'll then move into another discussion of – dare I say it –
spam! Only this time, it will involve a couple of things being done
at the server site.

And did you ever get a message full of less than and greater than
signs, and all of those "tag" names? We'll fix one so
that you can read it the way it was meant to be.

Y'all come.

No, I haven't found a great site for buying dog food. It's
just that we will have a variety of tidbits for everyone.

We'll start with the usual announcements and move on to the Q & A
– which could work both ways.

Next we'll look at how to make searching the web as quick and
painless as possible – in both IE and Netscape!

Joe will impart his first-hand experiences using the Spamnet spam
filter.

To follow that, I'll show you what I recently learned using Spam
Assassin.

I'll also try to talk intelligently about Choice Mail. This is
the one that blocks messages from senders unknown to you until they
explain why they want to communicate with you and register themselves
with you.

And we'll take a look the latest upgrades to Netscape and Trillian.

So which ones are the Kibbles and which are the bits? C'mon and
help us figure that out.

We talked last month about getting your e-mail while away from home.
Of course, you have to do this from a "connected" computer, whether
it be a laptop, a friend's or publicly accessible desktop. The next
step has arrived. With the latest devices you can send, receive, and
even surf from anywhere you can get a cell phone signal. We'll look
at several reviews and discuss the pros and cons of various PDA/cell
phone combos. Maybe one day soon I won't need to look for reading
material to keep myself occupied in the little room! If you happen
to have one of these, please bring it and share your experiences with
it. If you know someone with one, bring it and its owner too!

Later we'll do our best to explore a conceptual search engine. It's
the usual search results, but brought to you in a whole `nother way
with sites, topics, and relationships.

Want to know what's in the news or weather, including allergy
conditions around these parts? There is a local web site that covers
all this well… and has been right under our noses for quite some time.

Bring your Q's and we'll try to find some A's for them too.

I have a topic in mind for a future meeting, but needs some
volunteers to assist in testing the various options. The only way to
know for sure is to try `em out.

So come on out… this is the last SIG you can visit this month!

What's more important to have nowadays than an American Express card
when you leave home? Access to your e-mail, of course! We'll start
by looking at a basic read, reply, delete service that doesn't
require any sign-up… and you can use as often as you like! Later
we'll explore the more famous and more full-featured method.

Joe has been using a spam-blocking program for a while now and says
that he is "impressed". It sounds pretty tasty to me!

It's also time to update our SIG in a couple of ways, so be sure to
come talk about them and provide any feedback or alternatives you
might have.

Whatever happened to old whatzisname? Tools available on the Internet can help you find old friends, colleagues, and old enemies!  Where are these tools and how can you use them?  Joe will fill us in.

Spamorama has already come and gone, but that’s OK because we’re going to look at the online version.  All that unwanted equivalent to junk mail can soon get to be a pain in the Inbox.  We’ll discuss some things you can do to minimize it, including some web sites that provide a very effective method.

We’ll also have some news items on Google, Mozilla, and more.

It seems we always get too much of the wrong stuff and too little of
the right stuff!

Joe will show us what it takes to get rid of that nasty Klez virus
that is going around and on the new and improved networking found in
Windows XP.

Advertising is a necessary evil most of the time, but can be quite a
nuisance depending on how it is implemented. We'll look at some ways
of minimizing this... especially those pop-up and pop-under windows.

In browsing the web, I use the open in new window feature quite a
bit… but IE6 just won't do it maximized. Fortunately, there is a
freeware program that solves this problem.

Next month: low-cost dial-up Internet access… and more.

If you would like to suggest a future topic, let me know.

We are both going to follow this advice this month!

Joe is going to continue with the wireless networking. Hopefully we
will be surfing the net without the ball and chain of a cable or
phone cord… from at least 10 feet away!

I'll bring pre-installed copies of software on my laptop… and
diskette copies as a backup so that we can have less talk and more
action this time! We'll do instant messaging over several
services
with Trillian and fill in forms, userids, and passwords with Roboform.

Next month: keeping advertising, especially the pop-ups and pop-
under windows, from driving you nuts!

Possible future topics:
o alternate means of accessing e-mail
   o webcams
   o online calendars
   o (your suggestion here!)

"Internet Helper"

We'll add a pinch of this and a smidgen of that… and hopefully come
up with something edible!

Turning one of the bedrooms into a study was pretty cool, so now I
dream about how cool it would be to surf and e-mail on the laptop
from the living room. While I could string a cable, wireless is much
more appealing. Joe is doing his best to prepare to show us how to
set up a wireless network to share an Internet connection. Let's
keep our fingers crossed!

If that doesn't work out, Joe is prepared to discuss the new version
of Zone Alarm and the differences between the free and the fee
varieties.

Can you envision having 4 or 5 phone systems and each network builder
giving you a phone that only worked on their system? Yeesh! That is
just what has happened to instant messaging (IM). But now there is a
new kid in town named Trillian that can talk on all of them and I'll
introduce y'all.

Gator sure seemed like a good idea when he came along. Keeping track
of your userids and passwords and filling out forms was a big help –
but then we learned those eyes coming out of the water were spying on
us! You could let your firewall cut the string off his tin can so he
can't tell anyone what he saw, but wouldn't you rather have a better-
behaved helper? AI Roboform is just that... and can remember more
things too.

Possible future topics:
  o pop-up ad stoppers
  o webcams
o alternate means of accessing e-mail
  o online calendars
  o (your suggestion here!)

"Defensive Surfing"

I'm not paranoid - they really are out to get me! Between the
hackers and the advertisers, it sure feels that way sometimes.

As broad as this topic can be, we'll first quickly review some oldies
but goodies, namely anti-virus and firewall programs.

Most of the time will be spent on privacy issues, namely spyware and
its newest varieties dubbed parasites and bugs. It's pretty amazing
what can be gathered about you, but fortunately there is some help
out there too.

Possible future topics:
o webcams
o a multilingual instant messenger
o an even better form filler / password helper
o alternate means of accessing e-mail
o Online calendars

"Passwords, Passport, and Hemingway"

With 3 topics from 3 presenters, this month's meeting promises to
have something of interest to everyone. And heeerrreee they are:

Have you signed up for every online service that requires a member
name as password? Sometime I feel like I have. Even with a system
for picking my passwords, I find myself clicking on "Forgot your
password?" all too often. Since we can't eliminate the need,
come along and we'll explore a web site that will help us manage
them and make quick use of them.

If you follow the cyber news at all, you've undoubtedly heard
about Microsoft's Passport. It seems that everything new is
good… and bad… depending on your point of view and whom you
ask. Joe is following this subject and will fill us in on the latest
developments.

To quote an old title "and now for something completely
different"… namely, a guest speaker! According to his associate:
"Chipp Walters will be presenting material on rapid and cost
effective site development. Chipp was Founder and CEO of Human Code,
one of Austin's first interactive software startups. Mr.
Walters and partner Chris Bohnert are creating a rapid website
development tool and content deployment system called Hemingway. You
can find out more about the Hemingway product at:
http://www.altuit.com ." I looked at this a while ago and if you
(or anyone you know) are interested in developing and/or maintaining
web sites that are heavy on substance and light on fluff, this is a
good way to go.

With all that said, the topics under consideration for future
meetings are:
o an instant messenger that will replace 5 other instant messengers
o an in-depth look at alternate means of accessing your e-mail
o Telephone access to all kinds of information
o Online calendars
As always, any suggestions, feedback, etc. are always welcome.

This month's meeting will include:

o Joe has a new wrinkle on the virus scene.  A repair by either of the top anti‑virus programs can leave you with a less than ideal connection to the Internet.  We can’t have that!  Joe has the solution.

o Basics.  E-mail.  Part 1 covered composing and addressing messages.  Next we’ll get into sending/receiving, previewing, and reading messages.  It will likely be next month before we can cover setting up accounts and “all those options”.

o Web Sightings. Special purpose e-mail sites.  We’ll look at some sites that handle incoming faxes, encryption, large attachments, telephone access, and sending e-mail to people without e-mail addresses!

Possible future topics include:

 o Web site content management

 o Planning for road trips

o Telephone access to all kinds of information

 o Online calendars

If you have a preference or another topic to suggest, let me know.

Hope to see you there… and invite your friends too.

Wednesday 10/24/01, 6:30 – 8:30 P.M.

Old Quarry Library, 7051 Village Center Dr.

This month's meeting will include:

o Basics. E-mail. Learn all the little nuances of the "killer app"
of the Internet... and maybe teach me some things too!

o Removing the NIMDA virus. "Doctor Joe" :) has done it twice now!

o Tracking airline flights. After the WTC attack, it became very
interesting to see where the planes were at any given time.

Hope to see you there.

We're going to try something new at the Internet SIG this
month… and that is a session on the basics. The idea is to cover
some aspect of using a web browser or e-mail program… or any
other mainstream program used by folks in cyberspace. It should also
help fill in the gaps for those somewhat more familiar with the
subject.

This month the basics session will cover how to use your browser to
return to various web sites. These are known as Favorites in
Internet Explorer and as Bookmarks in Netscape Navigator. We'll
look at why and how to use them, where and where not to use them, how
to organize them, and any questions anyone has on them.

Following that, Joe has some new virus information to share with us.
He keeps up on this as much as anyone I know, so it should be quite
enlightening. Knowledge and a good anti-virus program are worth
their weight in gold nowadays.

After that, we'll look at the online bookmark managers I had
planned to discuss previously. If you use multiple computers or
travel without a laptop or ever find yourself trying to surf the net
without your bookmarks or favorites, these sites can help you out.

Thanks to Don signing us up, we'll meet at the usual time and place:
Wednesday evening, 6:30 – 8:30
Old Quarry Library, 7051 Village Center Dr.

Next time… on the Internet SIG…

Well OK, it’s not a TV program… but rather than tell you how rough it is for Bill Clinton to find golf partners, hopefully you’ll come away with something you can actually use!

After some news, announcements, Q&A, etc., Joe will continue with what he started on the Yahoo Group.  This will be easier than keeping up an e-mail distribution list and provide file storage space for SIG notes too.

Next, we’re gonna SAVE YOU MONEY!  I’ll start by showing a shopping web site that gives you some sort of a rebate on every purchase AND includes all the big names in online shopping.  If I keep using it at the minimal rate I have, this too should be able to cover my membership fee for the year!

I had planned to continue with my online bookmark managers discussion, but one is having technical difficulties… and expects to be back online soon – Thursday!

Have you ever wished you could retrieve that e-mail message from your “other” computer… or need to use the software loaded on it (like the Dilbert calendar!!)?  I’ll show a service that will let you do just that for a small fee after a free trial… and talk about some software that will also do it for free.  These things will run on many different operating systems to boot (sorry!),

But wait!  Now how much would you pay?  It’s all free (well, except for that one service!)!

When and where do you get all this, you ask.

Wednesday evening, 6:30 – 8:30

at the Old Quarry Library, 7051 Village Center Dr.
