Jim has his iPhone 4... and 2 bumpers... and the update to the signal bars... and little reception problems.

And... apparently has 1 too many toys... and so will be offering his Acer netbook to club members first at a bargain price.

Hope to see y'all there.

2 bumpers? Is one a Lance Armstrong "Livestrong" bracelet? :P

Subject: File sync / backup program

As a CPA, file backup or duplication to external drives is a big deal as is making sure the files on my home computer are the same as the office computer.

One of the new utilities I've been using is Toucan which can be found at portableapps.com

Specifically, the program is under the utilities list.

From a portion of the program description, the following provides the most comprehensive overview of the file sync features:

Five synchronisation modes, Copy, Mirror, Equalise, Move and Clean. These can be combined with a variety of file checks such as File Size, Modified Time and a File Header Check to minimise the amount of copying needed.

What this means is the program can copy newer versions of the file from A to B automatically.  However, it can also determine if files were deleted on B or added on B and either delete appropriate files on A or copy files to A.  So if I take a drive to the office and add new files to it or delete files from it, return home and add files to my home computer and then sync - both drives will have the same files!

It's free.

thanks,

David

'End call' sticker for iPhone 4

I just stumbled across this photo via the lovely FlipBoard app on my iPad. Apparently it’s made by Aaron Draczynski and is just a mockup but I guess that someone probably will start producing these really soon! Brilliant.

Our fearless leader is on vacation, but we can have a good time exchanging ideas even if we don't have all the very latest hardware!  .

I've picked up several nuggets lately and am sure many of y'all have too... so lets again spend at least some of the time taking turns in the spotlight (only figuratively!) sharing... whether it be an app, a tip, a news item, or whatever.

See y'all there,

My "new model" black Kindle (http://www.amazon.com) arrived yesterday
afternoon, so Becky has officially inherited the white one. The higher-contrast
display definitely makes it more readable, and it is somewhat faster and
noticeably smaller while keeping the same screen size. It has wi-fi in
addition to 3G, with the wi-fi normally taking precedence if it's in a hot
spot. (Downloading a book via wi-fi is several times as fast as via phone, and
it doesn't eat the battery as fast, either. If you don't have a need to order
books while in a car or in the middle of the boondocks, the wi-fi-only model
seems like it would be perfectly useful and $50 cheaper.)

After half a day of twiddling I'm still somewhat fumble-fingered with it,
because the buttons are placed differently compared to the older model, but I
assume that will pass.

Other than the extra menu item to toggle the wi-fi, the software is identical,
as far as I can tell.

More later.

Thanks for the Tip Ross & Mike ( LOL ! )   There are some things the iPad just doesn’t do as well ….Kimberly read that 2 or 3 book publishers are going 100% digital format leaving the traditional paper a thing of the past….include Publishers of Webster’s Dictionary.

Thanks mike for the iPad LINK from Cydia rather than the Apple App Store, to Buy “DisplayOut”.  And it works seamlessly and Wonderfully….Now iPad plugs into its VGA Adaptor and the Projector SCREEN will Display Every App, Screen Shot and Configuration, Web Pages, Unbelievable….So those never really have seen the iPad up Close will be able to See it ALL at our Meeting September 21st 6 pm at Sherlock’s Pub….Bring your Android Mobile Devices and soon to be release Windows 7 Phone devices….as well as the iOS devices, and Laptops.

I was pleasantly surprised to get a text message on my Tilt (cell phone) to the effect that my Kindle, ordered on 5 August, was out for delivery for Saturday, 9/11.  I could not help myself to do a little dance in the middle of the Genaology SIG before coming home to fine that USPS had delivered that afternoon.  Amazon had advised me that it had been shipped on 9/7 with an expected delivery date of 9/15-9/16.  I already had received the light equiped cover that had been ordered at the same time and found that the K3 fit quit well and, once powered on, the light was sufficient for reading in dim or dark conditions.  After deregistering from my account under which it had been ordered, I realigned registration with the account that Penny had established for the K2 that I gave her for her birthday and found that all the books that had been ordered through Amazon were also on my new K3 ready for reading.  The only issue I have is that books ordered form another source aren't available in the Amazon Kindle Archive Library. I find that I will need to become more acquainted with the Calibre application to create my more personal, multi-source library. I've very much enjoyed the look and feel of the K3 and it didn't take long to become familar with the new configuration of the control buttons. It is amazingly fast for downloading books using the Wi-Fi connection moreso than the 3G connection to the Amazon Whispernet. I will be sure to have it with me at the Linux Beginner SIG where John and I can share displaying the newest Amazon reader.

The first e-reader from digital photo frame manufacturer Pandigital sports a 7 inch color LCD display and benefits from access to the Barnes & Noble eBookstore

Image Gallery (3 images)

Digital photo frame manufacturer Pandigital has announced its entry into the world of the e-reader with the 7-inch full color Novel. The multi-touch Android-based reader features a gigabyte of internal memory, is powered by an ARM Mobile processor and has two reading modes. Users will also benefit from the company's partnership with Barnes & Noble, giving access to over a million titles as well as services such as the book-lending LendMe technology.

For its first dip into the e-reader market, Pandigital has managed to score a partnership deal with Barnes & Noble to allow users access to the B&N eBookstore and associated services. As well as over half a million free-to-download classics, the eBook service allows users to browse, buy and download magazine, newspaper and book titles over a WiFi connection in seconds.

The 7-inch 800 x 600 color multimedia LCD touchscreen Novel features an edge-to-edge glass screen, an orientation sensor for automatic portrait and landscape adjustment, an SD/MMC card slot to expand on the 1GB of internal memory and mini-USB 2.0 port for direct connection to a computer or laptop. It's powered by an 800MHz ARM 11 Mobile processor running an Android 2 based operating system.

As well as 802.11b/g/n wireless connectivity, the device also benefits from an onboard dictionary, adjustable font size, multiple bookmarks, a web browser and email application, multimedia players, alarm clock, calendar and, naturally, can be used as a photo viewer too. The 5.5 x 7.5 x .5 inch, 16 ounce reader supports most of the common formats including ePub, PDF, HTML, MP3, AAC, JPEG, PNG and MPEG4 video. Battery life is said to be around six hours.

Having a color LCD screen is perhaps more a direct response to the iPad than to the Kindle and Nook, which benefit from the crisper type and better contrast of an e-Ink display. The Novel's night reading mode could offer some relief for tired eyes though, inverting text and background colors for more discreet viewing.

The Novel will be available in early June for US$199.99, which includes a display stand, USB cable and power adapter.

Bad timing for Pandigital. Just today, Barnes and Noble released their eReader app for the iPad. Apple steals a would-be competitor's thunder again.

If this runs flash and is ereader priced, it has a huge edge on the iPad, aka the high school textbook market.

I hate to say this, but the manufacturer wants you pronounce it like "Cruise," but in reality, is looks like the pronunciation is closer to "Crud" or "Cruds" than it is to "Cruise."  What an awful name (for the US market).
