You will probably get many answers to this, as there are many solutions.

For me, an professional grade external MIDI sound module is the best answer.
Something Roland Sound Canvas grade or better. You can probably get a good used
one on eBay of you are looking for a deal. Also note, that you will need an amp
and speakers to go this route (a home CD system will do fine if it has an AUX
input).

Personally, I've never heard a sound card that pleased my ears. The synth in
most if not all computer sound cards is not made for a musician's ears. It is
primarily for gamers and non-professionals. There is more engineering on
reproducing WAV and other digital sounds than creating them from scratch.

Some people like software synths, but personally I don't think they are quite
mature enough yet.

Hi A good general modual is Ketron SD2 or SD4,there are more expencive types but if you are just a home player its the tops for any type of music regards Dave...
