It's interesting that the copyright dates presented here do not agree, which
resurrects the question of how to determine with certainty that a copyright is
held by a specific party, who can be petitioned or paid for the right to use
that song. Which raises the related question of how to get permission to use a
protected tune... anybody know?

And regarding a 1982 copyright on Jingle Bells, which was stated in other emails
to be in the public domain, I presume that copyright is on the particular
arrangement? Which suggests that the words, melody and chords are still in the
public domain, but one can't re-record the protected arrangement?

Any song writen before 1923 is public domain. It looks like the only one that is
in public domain is Jingle Bells

Winter Wonderland 1934
Jingle Bells 1857
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas 1944 from Movie Meet me In St Louis

Jingle Bells was published in 1857 by James Pierpont and is no longer in
copyright.

Still in copyright, Have Yourself a Merry little Christmas, written for the
movie *Meet Me in St. Louis *in 1943 by Martin and Ralph Blane.

Winter Wonderland is in copyright and there's currently a curflufal because
UTube and Warner Brothers made a little girl take down her vidio of her
singing Winter Wonderland and the EFF said that's just too much and got
involved, so it's a court case now.

I was going to post my version of a few Christmas songs to a music site when I
was stopped in my tracks by a message asking me to verify copyright ownership of
the song I was posting, or permission to use the copyrighted material. Surely
some Christmas carols are in the public domain, but now I'm wondering how to
determine if the ones I've chosen are still under copyright protection. Anybody
know how to find out?

FWIW, the songs in question are:

Winter Wonderland
Jingle Bells
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

But It would be helpful to know how to research this, if anybody can provide
that information. I searched online to no avail.

ran into some problems when I tried to upgrade from Vista to Win 7. Ran the Win
7 Upgrade advisor and uninstalled programs or drivers that it listed that should
be removed. Still I had some problems. I then tried installing Win 7 on my
external Esata drive and it worked well.

I'm sure BIAB would run well in Win 7 but the Dual bootinng was not related to
BIAB.

Why the dual boot? BIAB works wonderfully in Win7.

My HP Pavillion running Vista 64 bit has been my main PC for quite awhile.
After installing BIAB on my HP I could run it OK but could not use it
with most of my USB midi devices.

The device I wanted to use most was my Fantom X6 Keyboard workstaion.
It gives great voicing when playing BIAB or other midi players.
Roland only had a 32 bit driver to use with Vista so I could no longer
use the Fantom X6 with BIAB.

I'm glad to report that Roland does now have a fantom X series 64 bit driver
for Vista available for download. I installed the driver last night so now I can
use BIAB a lot more again.

I also discovered there are both a Vista and Windows 7 drivers for my Edirol
PCR A30 midi controller. Now I can use my QY100 sequencer again along with it in
both Vista and Windows 7. The Edirol is a Roland product.

I'm using both Vista and Windows 7 on my HP Notebook now. I installed
Windows 7 on a external Esata drive so I'm dual booting between the systems. I
only have BIAB installed on the original Vista OS though.

In BIAB for Mac, in the Notation edit window, click on the Opt. button and enter
"-12" in the Transpose Semitones box.

Yes -- in the Melody screen (or the leadsheet screen)
there's an Opt. button which you click on and from there you
can set the octave transposition. It would be -12 (minus
twelve) to lower the pitches an octave.

One final bit of advice is to simply install the DXi version
of VSC which ships with every version of BIAB in recent
years -- it's far better than any Microsoft soft-synth, and
will avoid this error message.

And if you want even better sounds, spring the $49 to buy
the ForteDXi softsynth, which demo version also ships with
BIAB. It's got far better sounds even than VSC.

It seems to be a common problem. I get around it by by changing the Midi output

You might go to options and click on midi audio driver set up , then driver
wizard and make sure you have your sound card on. I'm new toy BIAB , but that

Band-In-A-Box Group.I have the same problem with getting this message almost
every time I first turn on BIAB. I can't find a consistent reason for it, and
usually get some sound by trial and error. It can't be just a matter of a volume
control not being turned up, as that surely wouldn't give such a message. What
do the BIAB creators say?

When in editable notation mode, the third click-box says Mono. Click it off
and you can use as many notes as you wish.

In piano roll mode, you can stretch notes so they overlap, and create as
many lines of polyphony as you wish. However, when they show up on the
fakebook page, they do not necessarily show up as actual polyphony. None the
less, they play accurately. I often do this for intros or bridges, using the
solo track.

Make sure the volume is turned up on your synth volume. This has happened
to me before and when I click on the little speaker down in the system tray
it comes up that the volume is all the way down or is muted.

Check that first,

The only other program I'm aware of that might use this driver is Cakewalk,

How can I find out what other program is using this driver so that I can disable

I'd appreciate any ideas you might have.

I spent a few hours trying to get BiaB running on Wine, but all I could hear was

Yeah, if I ever wrote a piece of music that was performed by a major
Symphony Orchestra you guys would be hearing about it here for the
next couple of decades, minimum. Nicely done Serban.
