The Department of forests is doing a great with NWFPs, now we have some guidelines and common frameworks for such produces. In absence of such guidelines, we have already lost a good market for pipla for example.
To streghtened this sector from the begining itself we need to focused on its most important components
1. Management of resources at thier sources that includes (( management at its soruces ( managers group formation (equity within group)) sustaianble harvesting ( amount, time, who harvests at what cost etc),
Within this group, we need to clarify on ecology and biology of the species in question.
2. Post Harvest techniques. This is the second most important step on the chain of events under NWFPs and also includes value addition ( bagging, leveling and branding if possible of certain products) and also quility control
3. Marketing of the products, which is the most important factor for its sustainability in future.
Unless these three components and thier related activities are conducted in systemtic ways, slowly things will fall apart and the whole purpose of poverty alleviation with nwfps will be defeated.
This much for toady
best regards
