I have been looking at making Bio diesel, actually did the 1 liter
thing using KOH, I have for hydrogen generator. As far as buildin a
processor for it, that seems rather straigh fwd and collecting the used
greese is no problem in my area, Idabel, Okla.
My question is on the methanol. Closest source to me 140 miles, only
5 gal containers, at $43, or internet orders still running at 7 to 8
dollars a gallon. If I am correct 22% by volume, for a 20 gallon batch
of bio would be 4.4 gallons or in the area of $36. Again if my math is
correct, roughtly it would cost $2 a gallon to produce, with out
recovering the methanol. I had not orginaly intended to build a
recovery system, but now think it is a must for finanical reasoning.
My question, have I missed, just went to the wrong sources to get
the methanol, or am I missing something in my calaucations ? Thanks in
advance, Bill C

You definitely want to look around. I haven't priced it recently, but
last time I bought commercially it was ~4/gal. I last bought it from a
commercial biodiesel operation in the area - his bulk price at the time
was around 2/gal and I bought it for 2.75. That was when gas was still
$4.00, so I expect the price has come down some since. $8 sounds absurd.
I'm more of a dreamer than a doer. Let's say you pick up dried leaves, paper,
and wood chips. These can be destructively distilled to yield 50% water and 10%
methanol. The remainder is charcoal, which I read is great for the garden. I
figure to make a few gallons of methanol, it would cost hundreds of dollars,
thousands of hours, and fill my whole back yard.

Try HHO companies, chemical companies, speed shops, racetracks and even a
biodiesel producer. My methanol cost me just under $3.00 a gallon. I would
highly recommend adding a recovery system, it is not very expensive to add and
will pay for itself in no time, removing the methanol make washing easier too.

Closest place I have found, 140 miles from me 5 gal for $43, then on
the internet at; http://www.aaa-chemicals.com/bisore.html ;;it is
$319 a 55 gallon barrel, shipping included. bad news is no one does
bio arround this are, good news is no competion for used oil. Actually
they pay to have removed.
If I can get a price at $4 a gallon or cheaper, I am willing to
drive up to 150 miles to get it in Dallas tex, shreveport ,Louisina, or
southren Arkanasa. So if any one knows of it for sale in any oof those
areas, information would be appriciated, Bill C

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
any tracks that have sprint cars with have methanol.
at the start of the season you could clean up buy "stale" methanol trackside..
But now I bet any distributor locally that have a half empty drum
would sell it cheap
oz

it's maybe a tad farther, but Parker Solvents in Fort Smith, Ark. Sells it
by the gallon at competitive prices (haven't bought from there lately but it
was lower than most folks quoted on this list).
Bring you own barrel (I've bought it as little as 10 gallons at a time, just
pay, back up and they pump it till their pump tells them you have the total
amount, but usually i end up with an extra gallon)
They are on wheeler ave, (industrial/comercial area on south part of town.)

I think about 1 1/2 hour away, and that would work out great. One
problem of living remote, rural is getting materials. As I said in
eariler post, the advanatage no competion for oil. And at the cost of
even building a good system yourself, logistics need to be considered
first.
Again thanks for the replies, Bill C
