The School: The School of Archaeology and Palaeoecology conducts
research of international importance. Queen's Archaeology and
Palaeoecology achieved a Grade 5 (highest 5*) for the quality of its
research in 1996 and again in 2001, placing it in the top 10
departments in the UK. In November 2000, the Palaeoecology Centre was
awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize. Over the past thirty years the
School's Palaeoecology Centre has developed an expertise in
scientific dating methods, climate and environmental change and
bioarchaeology. In 2002, the School established the Centre for
Archaeological Fieldwork (CAF) which undertakes excavation work for
Environment and Heritage Service (NI) and has provided employment for
students and graduates. Finally, the School recently was awarded £6.2
million to establish the Centre for Chronology, Environment and
Climate, which will result in the construction of a new building
housing both Archaeology and Palaeoecology, funding for new research
on environmental and climate change and the establishment of an AMS
radiocarbon laboratory, only the third such facility in the UK and
the first in Ireland.

Funding: Funding for the above projects will be available through 3
studentships. Candidates should hold a 1st class or 2:1 Honours
degree in Archaeology or related subject. Preference will be given to
candidates with a Masters degree. Candidates must have been resident
in the UK for 3 years (years in study do not count) to be eligible
for full funding associated with these awards, which cover fees,
maintenance and research expenses. EU students are eligible for fees
only.
