Hello Donald

There are tie down fabric hooks on top and bottom off every panel joint. I
removed the bottom of the
tent so that our tripods would not make holes in the floor. Any sides of the
tent can be lowered by just pulling down on the top fabric hooks and attaching
to stakes.

Keep the questions coming guys I think this will be a great Product.

Hey Bill

(I don't understand this use of the word, "Hey" as a salutation. I first noticed
it in use in movies in the early 1990s but almost never before that or in
general parlance. Now it is everywhere; even I use it!)

As I'm getting one of the first 210mm refractors, would the 5' or the 6' walls
that fold down when you need a lower wall (which I thought was a marvelous idea)
be better for me? Though mostly I suspect that for observing parties I'd take
the BO/TMB 100mm binoculars and for those a 5' wall might be okay.

I, too, like the idea of only one door. But, with no floor, what about the
scorpions? I was at an observing party in Southern California and on packing my
tent and sleeping bag in the morning I found I had been lying on a scorpion
under my tent floor. And what about stakes? I don't see where you mention or
illustrate them. As shown, even a light breeze would pick up the tent and send
it flying to Tennessee or someplace. . . .

Frank-
I get my cases from www.casetechnology.com... They have a case price calculator
on there that you can get an immediate price quote. You simply plug in the
height, width and length for the inside dimensions you desire and it gives you a
price. You can choose the foam lining size you want, 1" is the default- and what
I have used for all the cases I've gotten from there. They've made me cases for
my Schiefspiegler (about the size of a small coffin!), 127/8, 80mm Planet
Hunter, 5" Wegat-Meade Mak, Takahashi 20x60 bino's, Nikon Prostars... a few
others. I'm having one made for my Celestron C8, it'll run me about $215.00
shipped... for a custom made hardcase, I don't think you can beat their prices-
or the quality of their work. Barry is great to work with.

I would like to replace the original rings from my 127/8. What other rings are
folks using? I tried the 127 Parallax rings, but they do not fit.

Thanks,

Hi Frank

Yes! We are working with our old 1278 telescope supplier. They will be producing
the tubes for our new ED doublet scopes and all scopes will come in cases. I
will see about cost.

Bill,
One door would be fine with me but I would definitely want the zip out top so
that in principle, one could leave some or all equipment in place overnight
rather than haul it indoors in the wee hours. Scorpions are not a problem at my
latitude (42 deg) but perhaps a zip-in floor could be an option for those
concerned.

Are there loops for staking it to the ground? Could it be made black?

Two doors might be advantageous if you could polar align through one of them and
I would prefer a roof that zipped .

I would buy one as shown just to give it a try.

Frank-
I don't remember... I bought it over a year ago. Simply take the dimensions of
your scope- and plug them into the case calculator! It's easy! For instance...
let's say the scope measures 6" x7" (has rings and a dovetail on it, right!?!) x
36" long... choosing the lightweight ATA case (appropriate case for that size
scope), you plug in those dimensions and it gives you a price of $246.00. That's
with 2 handles, 2 catches, 1" foam lining, 1/4" wall thickness. The case would
weigh 17 lbs., and if you plug in your zip code, it'll give you shipping. That
took me less than a minute to write this message AND calculate the price on
their website!
For comparison, a Scopeguard case for a Meade 127ED is $399.00 + shipping. I
don't have the dimensions for the Burgess right now, I just pulled those
dimensions out of the air... Just go to their website and take a look... it's
easy to use.

But actually, that's a good point!

Can't you just align the one door north and then close it if your
light pollution comes from the north?

The nice thing about having a case made for your scope, is you can custom choose
the dimensions. Have a different focuser??? No problem. Want to keep your
diagonal in the scope? No problem... just measure the length of your scope- the
width- and the height (a good way is to set it on a table on the dovetail if you
have one/leave it on it...) , plug in the dimensions, it takes everything else
into account. And the prices are very good for what you get. Their cases are as
good as they come. Want more cushioning??? No problem... choose thicker foam
cushioning. DIfferent handle configuration? No problem. Wheels on it? No
problem... just check the boxes.

tent looks awesome,,I'll buy one for sure, for staking purposes , I have a couple
hunting blinds made the same way,and they work great as shelters and are very
dark inside but the material is purpose built witha black interior and camo
exterior, loops would be great for stakes but ,I just burn a couple holes in my
blinds, and set stakes in those, the plastic .poly etc material melts nicely into
perfect tear proof holes witha lit cig..

Hi John

We need to pick a color and your suggestion of black or white is good. For this
first run I plan to make one color. If they are successful we can make other
colors. Let me make a list of what I have
so far.
1) One door (The tent weights nothing so just slide over your scope after you
align)
2) Tie downs at each panel joint both top and bottom
3) Stakes supplied
4) Color white or black (Lets decide this quickly)
5) Top or no Top (We can make both)
6) ?

Ideally the tent would be black on the inside and white on the outside. White
will keep the tent cool in the sun during the day and of course black inside
will help make it dark. If it is only a single color I would go with a darker
color to block more light. My portable observatory uses reflective silver tarps
that block all lght and reflect heat, but I don't know if that material would
work in this design.

The top could be a simple rain fly arrangement with bungee and velcro
attachments to secur it. On if you want it, off if you don't.

As for scorpions...they get in tents with floors too. (little devils)

Tiedowns are a must! Ayone who has been to TSP, ESP and Okie-Tex will attest to
that. Never underestimate the power of moving air!

This looks like an intersting product and I am anxious to see the final design.

Bill,
I would favour black tent material but find the bi-colour idea interesting if
not too costly. I really do want the top though - maybe the top could be white
or reflective? - and stake-down loops are basic for anyone with tenting
experience. This is getting very interesting!

The dual color is nice but if it has to be one color how about a medium grey
that handles both sun reflection and light blocking. I think a top is necessary
so you can leave it set up during the day and block dust and sunlight. The best
would be to have a zippered top and a rain fly to cover the entire tent to
handle heavy rain.

I can see it now, Robert: The observatory tent with a rain cover and a snow
cover on top of that. . . .Both of the covers should have tanks to store the
runoff or melt water which we can sell to our neighbors as astrowater . . . or
drink it ourselves to lengthen our lifespans, or at any rate, make our kidneys
happy. I still think an anti-scorpion/snake shield is necessary. The Southwest
has scorpions and here in Virginia, we have rattlesnakes. Michigan has snakes,
too. There was a nest of Michigan rattlesnakes about fifty feet from my
observatory when I lived in Oakland County, Michigan.

Snakes? I was talking (in Portuguese) with a Brazileiro and asked him how many
snakes were in São Paulo, where we were living. He was shocked that an American
would think that São Paulo would have any snakes at all until I pointed out
that, growing up in Chicago I had picked up over 300 snakes in the city.

Yeah, I know, Bill. You don't want our tripod toenails to puncture the scorpion
shield. But glass cups like our piano legs sit on should take care of that.

A rain fly is a pretty standard item on a tent, even the 19.99 Walmart specials.

All good

I don't care what color it is as long as it is opaque as possible.

> 5) Top or no Top (We can make both)

I prefer without so it will cheaper but I can see putting the top on
just to keep dew off so I can pack it all up in the morning!

White, if totally opaque, would be tolerable except that it will show the dirt
or scuffs fast. Opaque Gray would be best for hot weather or cold. Black
material would be good for the inner lining with gray on the outside when ready
for high production runs.

The windshield sunlight blocking screens I purchased for my minivan a couple of
years ago from WalMart are reflective silver on the outside and flat black on
the inside. They are light and very efficient at blocking light. On a clear day
you can hold one of the panels up and the Sun only appears as a noticeable blur.
Neighbor's yard lights are completely blocked. Someone mentioned white would
show dirt easily. Silver and black gets my vote.

   Hi John

We need to pick a color and your suggestion of black or white is good. For
this first run I plan to make one color. If they are successful we can make
other colors. Let me make a list of what I have
   so far.
   1) One door (The tent weights nothing so just slide over your scope after you

   3) Stakes supplied
   4) Color white or black (Lets decide this quickly)
   5) Top or no Top (We can make both)
   6) ?

There have been a few inquiries about cases for the 127/8 scope. I had access to
my 127/8 today, and decided to measure it and calculate the cost at
www.casetechnology.com for the size case I have for mine, so you can tell
exactly what one would cost through them. The inside dimensions of my case are
42" x 7" x 7". This allows me to keep the rings/dovetail on the scope, and I
have a Moonlight 3 knob focuser on mine. They gave me some scrap foam (.5"/1"
thick- they will throw some in if you ask) so I was able to custom fit the scope
to the case.
Plugging these dimensions into their case calculator, for the Custom Lightweight
ATA case- the price comes to $277.00, the case weighs 19.6 lbs, and to ship to
my NE Florida address, would cost $26.00. Hope this answers everyone's question.
A little more than I remember- but it's not that small of a scope! And this is a
seriously nice case for it.
And HAPPY THANKSGIVING to everyone!
Wes
