Very interesting and useful! I gave it a quick look and will probably have more
coherent comments later, probably regarding UI and additional functionality.
For instance it would be good for the user to be able to compare various
schools.

Slightly OT: I was surprised at the big differences between schools in various
categories. For example, we're supposed to be living in a "melting pot" but
take a look at the difference in ethnic demographics between Kalani and Waianae
High School.

I know it's not a final, but I'd give it a high grade. Keep us apprised of
updates.

I think one area of the site that needs improvement is the search feature.  It currently almost needs an exact match.  Also, some names have `okinas and some have 'apostrophes.  I'm thinking of trying out the google site search but not sure yet.  Any suggestions?

Doug - Thanks for the feedback.  There is a feature called 'my school list' where you can add schools to your list (like a shopping cart) and then compare them side by side according to whatever filters are available.  See the demo video here http://www.hawaiischoolguide.com/support/tour_demo.  You'll need to register to use that feature.

If you guys find any bugs or just want to make suggestions, the 'bug' tab on the left will capture the page you're on and your comments.  Thanks.

Ahh... but what character did you use for the `? Did you use an
apostrophe? An okina is not an apostrophe. That's the big challenge
with Hawaiian language diacriticals on the web.

A big challenge for any database too. Unless you had some kind of intermediary
process that would strip out all diacriticals and would search on a
like-stripped version of the properly represented Hawaiian word. In other
words, one would enter "Ho'ala" or "Ho`ala" and the process would convert it to
"hoala" and match that with the word "hoala" presented as "Ho`ala".

For my own utility databases, I enter and search on the terms without any
diacritical marks. But I feel bad about that because it perpetuates an
incorrect form.

Doug

P.S. I have a friend who insists that Aiea is properly, `A`i`e`a.

That's the issue that we're dealing with currently.  The ` okina messes up the search results currently.  We are working on a solution.

We usually add a hidden field to the database that lists alternate
spellings for search purposes. It adds production work but it serves
the users, and then you can include common mis-spellings too. It is a
relatively easy workaround, all things considered.

unfamiliar topic, with slides you've never seen, to an audience eager to
heckle and laugh at you. If you're in your underwear, you're having a

I will record presentations and post them to Youtube. The best
presentations will be entered into a contest where the winner will win

Kyle,

This sounds like a hoot. A cross between improv and Pecha Kucha. Rather than "Powerpoint Karaoke," I think they should call it "Whose Slide is it Anyway?" I looked on YouTube for examples, here's one from in Australia:

I really wish I could be there, but sadly, this is the same day as the full-day "LOST" program at the Hawaii International Film Festival.

If you were one of the esteemed and select few planning on attending
tonight's presentation on NTOP, then you are in luck.  Rather than
being a part of only one software
presentation/demonstration/participation event, you will now have the
opportunity of learning not only what is important about NTOP next
month, but also what is so special and great and empowering about
Joomla.  To be clear, the "social media" phenomenon is nothing more
than the fruit of the sharing and open tree rooted in Free and Open
Source Software.  You will want to learn about Joomla and Drupal the
next two months if you wish to enjoy the benefits of easily adding
content to your domain without giving all the metrics and value to
third-party 'social networks.'

NTOP - How Does it Look and What is it Doing (abbreviated bonus
edition) Where is everything?  What is it doing?  Why is some stuff
slow, some stuff fast, and why is that guy in the lobby smiling with
his wireless laptop?  Maybe it's time that you had a look around your
local area network to see what is really going on.  It actually comes
with pretty graphs and charts.

There's Evernote, or ritePen. I just got ritePen 3.5 and haven't tried it yet for imported handwriting.

Evernote does that (kinda sorta)

Can you believe it, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. This month's Bytemarks Lunch is a little early and next week already! For a variety of reasons we decided to converge on the date of Tuesday, Nov. 17. If you are curious why, I will explain at lunch. Also rather than going to a tech company, we will gather this month at a downtown restaurant. This will give us an opportunity to catch up with each other. We haven't had a chance to do that in a while. So here are the details:

When: Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009
Time: 11:30am - 1:00pm
Where: Mini Garden (downtown Honolulu)

RSVP: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4883123/

Chinese food! Just bring your tech stories and gadgets.

See you then.

The story behind that little Dell printer demonstrated to us at last week's Bytemarks lunch is detailed in an IEEE Spectrum story here .

Aloha

Here it is. Tonight. Joomla, and more, for you, at UH. It's our
regularly scheduled, and second-to-last, Open Source Presentation for
2009. We're gettin' down to the gravy.

For those of you who know it all, already, you can secretly follow
along at home. The tools for the night will be a BitNami produced
Joomla VM, http://bitnami.org/stack/joomla, and the 'free' VMWare
player. Weather permitting, the bouncing ball will likely be a live
Joomla deployment via Dreamhost. Perhaps we'll fiddle with the
defeatallincumbents.xxx domains.

To be clear, Joomla is a CMS - a Content Management System. It is
this framework that allows multiple collaborators to have select roles
in providing content to a domain *without* hosing the whole website.
It is this concept that creates the foundation to the multitudes of
hosted web2.0 sites.

Making My Web With Joomla
You've crawled around in other webs like those spun with AOL,
Facebook, and even Twitter. Now you are all grown up, and you are
ready to create your own web presence that is free from rules or
policies and guaranteed to be standards compliant and portable. Guess
what? You can do it, it can be pretty, and people will still be your
friend and follow you.

Making My Web With Drupal
Shazaam. Geemoninny. Wow. You want this, and you want more. For
people to call you the master of the universe, or at least master of
their universe, join us for a look at Drupal. You can do it, with a module.

PFOSSCON/TPOSSCON/{your_valued_acronym}
The dates are set, and the venue at UH is reserved for our annual
event that took a nap in 2009. Save the dates, January 15-17. We'll
be at the Marine Science auditoriums and courtyards on the 16th for a
day of talking, training, planning, and sharing. The emphasis is on
education. The evening of the 15th will be about dining and imbibing,
and the 17th will be a time for breakfast and departing for Australia
to attend linux.conf.au If you have topics you want addressed, things
you want to learn, or guests you want to see, then now is the time to
make your wishes known.

Bonus

Since last month we missed NTOP, I'll show it to anyone interested at
the conclusion of tonight's event.

NTOP - How Does it Look and What is it Doing (abbreviated bonus edition)
Where is everything? What is it doing? Why is some stuff slow, some
stuff fast, and why is that guy in the lobby smiling with his wireless
laptop? Maybe it's time that you had a look around your local area
network to see what is really going on. It actually comes with pretty
graphs and charts.

All

I will be doing my 3rd Annual 24hr Podcast Charity event starting at 7am
HST on December 12th. Local residents that want to participate should
send me a private email and let me know what three best times work for
you and what topic you would like to talk about. The topics I like to
cover during the 24hr Podcast is Technology, New Media, Social Networking.

This year I am doing a little twist. We will have the 5th Annual Podcast
Awards Ceremony midway through the event. I am also installing a 2
Channel Skypesarus to handle mainland participants so that I can patch
them into a video channel on my Tricaster.

I have yet to pick a charity for the event and will be doing so over the
next few days..
