In just over three more weeks the evenings slowly begin to get longer. Thank God for that. Winter is not my favourite time of year, and I am counting the days until it is over. In the meantime here are blogs:

Last night was the worst thunderstorm I have knownn, and it seemed to be immediately above the house. There were several powercuts, but luckily none of the animals were harmed. Graham is back in the UK and will be arriving later today as will Livvy and Ivan. Shosh and Gavin arrived in the wee small hours, so we have (or will have) a veritable houseful..

CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Richard Muirhead unearths an interesting early Chinese reference to one of the more contentious Indochinese cryptids
NATURAL HISTORY: Another amusing bit of zoo signage
NATURAL HISTORY: Diving waterfowl in Shagtown. But are they cormorants? Sadly not
CFZ PEOPLE: Neil Arnold meets George Noory

Cold, wet and windy. Thursday seems to be following the pattern of the winter so far. The wind is almost unrelenting and can be so noisy as to keep you awake for much of the night. Its all change today. Lizzy is going back to Lancashire, and Shosh (hopefully accompanied by Gavin) will be arriving either tonight or tomorrow. Graham was supposed to be back as well, but he caught the ferry from the Isle of Man yesterday but was forced to turn back because of the horrible weather in the Irish Sea. Where will it end?

CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Muirhead visits a dragon farm
NATURAL HISTORY: Sostratus is back. But what is he banging on about? Shirehorses apparently
NATURAL HISTORY: An amusing sign from a zoo in Thailand
POLITICS: The Center for Biological Diversity highlight another political issue of potentially enormous importance
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Dale Drinnon has a bold theory regarding the boobrie
NATURAL HISTORY: The new issue of Herpdigest is out

Another day of cold grey yuckiness, and I prepare to do battle with the forces of the Disability Services on behalf of Noela. She is, by the way, supposed to be coming out of hospital in a few days, but I shall believe it when I see it. Watch out world, Jon Downes is on the warpath and he has a psychotic gleam in his eye. Oh yes, and by the way there ARE blogs (and Oll's joke was particularly good this morning):

CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Muirhead's Mysteries has a gander at Steller's Sea Cow
CFZ PRESS: Corinna announces a new and interesting feature for Animals & Men. She is certainly a high flyer!

Sunday presents a cheerfully domestic scene. Jon, Liz and Corinna are all hard at work over red hot keyboards, Oll is feeding the animals and Jon has just agreed to lend his car to Alan and Jennie so they (and Liz) can go to Mass. On another tack we are very late with the blog today due to a mixture of cat shenanegans and a lengthy phone call from the good Doctor S in Ireland. Business as usual really:

CFZ PEOPLE: Marjorie Braund
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Richard Muirhead opens up his lake monster archives for the third time
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Dale Drinnon proposes a novel new identity for a little known Welsh cryptid
ANIMAL WELFARE: Corinna tells a horrific tale. I strongly suggest that Naomi does not look at this story
ANIMAL WELFARE: Lizzy Clancy with a slightly nicer tale of fat dogs than yesterday's story from Corinna
NATURAL HISTORY: Exciting news from the Charity Livebearer Auction in Redditch

Saturday lunchtime and all's well. The weather is atrocious but I am going out later to see Marjorie Braund who is back at home with her family. Graham is still in the Isle of Man doing some fortean investigating and seeing his mother, Lizzy and Corinna are hard at work, and I am just about to play with my new toy (a WW2 battle simulator thingy). Biggles is helping me with interest. But I did the blogs first:

CFZ ARCHIVING PROJECT: Another trenche of BHM stuff
ANIMAL WELFARE: Animal Obesity. Corinna reveals a shocking case study (and Jon has a fried breakfast)
CFZ PEOPLE: Richard Freeman live on Internet Radio
CONSERVATION: The latest Newsletter from the Center for Biological Diversity
FORTEAN ZOOLOGY: Muirhead is back, and guess what. Even whilst ensconsed at a Northumberland Friary, he comes up with new snippets of fortean information. How does the boy do it?
FORTEAN: Jon had no idea what he started yesterday when he commented on a spectacularly unpleasant news story from Peru. Today Alan F picks up the ball and runs with it

It is actually quite a jolly day here at the CFZ. The post was nice and undemanding, and the sun is shining. Scotch eggs for breakfast, and the chance to annoy everyone in the house by playing Hank Williams. What else could a man wish for?

CFZ: A snapshot of what is happening as we write
ANIMAL RESCUE: This story involving baby ducks is posted by request of Jon's stepdaughter Olivia
CONSERVATION: We have had a few adverse comments about our publicising the work of the Center for Biological Diversity, and in line with our policy of not censoring bloggocomments we have posted them. However, they seem pretty good folk to us and we shall continue to post what we get sent, like this appeal to save the US Clean Air Act
FORTEAN: This story is so peculiar it HAS to be a foaftale
ANIMAL RESCUE: Beth rescues a baby seal. Warning - contains scenes of a cute nature
CFZ ARCHIVING PROJECT: Theo P raises an interesting point. Jon addresses it

I seriously dislike the winter gales here in Woolsery. It's not even the end of November and every night the wind rampages through the countryside like Graham and me in an off-license. Back in 1974 my parents had an extension built, and the builders were not terribly good. 35 years later bits fall off and bits leak, and every night when it blows like no-one's business I am convinced in my paranoid state that the roof will blow off. Hmmmm.

CFZ: Why this week is even weirder than usual
CFZ ARCHIVING PROJECT: Part 12 of the BHM archives
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Part Two of Dale Drinnon's look at the chupacabra
FRISWELL'S FREAKY FEATURES: Giant insects. Hmmm
10:38 and I think I've made the wrong decision
another lifeless man with a strange incision
I hope that insect doesn't see me
he's not renowned for his courtesy
I'm not searching for the ants invasion
NATURAL HISTORY: Naomi follows up on yesterday's saga of bird heads and fire ants
FORTEAN: We thought that Woolsery was weird. But cop a load of this! Devon villages have a lot to answer for

Graham here, while Jon recovers from the difficulties of yesterday. See 'Anarchist Social Workers' (below) for more. Meantime, I've done a patrol around, to check for storm damage. Some parts of south-west England had floods, and some houses are minus a roof this morning, but we've come through it ok, so far.

So, retreating indoors to do the site updates, I've put links to the following, on our website:

Cheers for now, from a still rather stormy England.

Friday the 13th: not a day I am fond of, and today seems like it ain't gonna break the pattern. Graham and I are looking after Noela this morning, and will try and visit Marjorie Braund this afternoon, so the `Old Lady Run` will take up most of the day. Keep yer fingers crossed:

Blustery winds outside, but it is still dry enough for Graham to finish painting the window frames, and for me to have a steak sandwich. Wait a muinute, the latter has nothing to do with the weather, or indeed the bloggo. So you had better ignore me and look at the updates:

FORTEAN ZOOLOGY: Part four of Richard Muirhead's look at insects and other invertebrates of interest to forteans
CFZ ANIMALS: For some reason Biggles has decided that he has kangaroo DNA
CFZ PRESS: A sneak preview of Nick Molloy's new book
WEIRD WEEKEND 2009: The videos are still trickling through. Here is Neil Arnold with his talk on zooform phenomena
CFZ PEOPLE: Our collective sympathies go out to Lindsay Selby on the death of her pussycat `Baggins`
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: New Bigfoot Book
CFZ NEWS SERVICE: Oll Lewis brings us Yesterday's News Today

The 91st anniversary of the end of WW1 dawns greyly at the CFZ. It is a day that matters to me because both my grandfathers fought in the conflict. My paternal grandfather was fatally injured in Greece whilst serving in the Royal Horse Artilliary although he did not die of his injuries until the mid 1950s. My maternal grandfather (who I remember quite well) was a pilor on the Royal Flying Corps, and today I remember both of them.

I am up early today because of an appointment with the diabetic nurse (the nurse who deals with my diabetes, not a nurse who suffers from it as far as I know), who will puncture me, extract my blood, and warn me against the perils of doughnuts. I will then go to Morrison's, buy some doughnuts, and come home to get on with work. C'est la vie.

CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Dale looks at the mapinguari
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: The third installment of Richard Muirhead's look at inverts of fortean interest
FORTEAN ZOOLOGY: Corinna has another peculiar story about a dog with remarkable healing powers (unlike Biggles who has remarkable bin turning-out powers)
CONSERVATION: California condors face a new threat
CFZ PEOPLE: Colin Higgins told us a few weeks ago that he HAD to finish his current book before he could write more bloggostuff, but yesterday's bloggo inspired him to write us a letter
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Lanette is still watching over her gang of teenagers with an amused eye, as they juggle High School football and bigfoot hunting. In the meantime she gets caught up with nomenclature..

Yesterday was a particularly nice day. I hope that today will be the same. I am annoying the whole house by playing country music on Spotify, and there is steak for lunch. Things don't get much better than this:

MUIRHEAD'S MYSTERIES: Part two of Richard's look at inverts that are interesting from a fortean point of view
CFZ PEOPLE: Bloggo stalwart, and old friend of the CFZ Mike Hallowell has been ill for a while now. We have known the details but kept schtum, figuring that we should wait until Mike thought it was the right time to tell you. Now is the right time. It goes without saying that he is in our thoughts and prayers
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Neil Arnold asks "Who put the cat in Catford?"
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Lindsay with a tantalisingly unfinished story about a giant eel in Australia
FORTEAN: With a second Australian story of the day, Lawrie Williams asks whether minmins are alive?
FORTEAN ZOOLOGY: Examples of cross-species maternal instincts are always interested, but to our knowledge this is the first example involving an African hunting dog. This is where we get inundated with emails giving other examples of this. You wait and see...

Until five minutes ago, me and the orange cat were the only two mammals awake in the house. First Graham bustled through on the way to do errands in Bideford, then Corinna came in clutching coffee. Next Bigles will wake up, and finally it will be the turn of Oll. Then I shall probably go back to bed. But there are, indeed, blogs:

CFZ STUFF: A revolting pun, a country music reference, a picture of an empty bird feeder, and another of a misty garden. What is this all about? Jon'll tell ya
TERATOLOGY: A series of rather beautiful photographs of albino moose in Wisconsin. (Here, by the way, Iam assuming that the plural of moose is also moose, rather than meese or mooses or something even more arcane)
FORTEAN: Part Two of Neil Arnold's look at animal stories from Chinese Folklore
NATURAL HISTORY: Extraordinary piccies of a mantis chowing down on a hummingbird
CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Dale Drinnon on the Master Otter
ANIMAL WELFARE: A Cow with a Robotic Rectum? Can such a thing be? Well, yes, apparently, and Robert S felt the understandable need to tell us about it. We would probably have done the same thing under his circumstances

The autumn still seems to be doing its best not to be going away. The sun is still shining, my roses are still blooming, and yesterday - in one of the breaks in the rain - I saw a small brown butterfly (probably a speckled wood) but I didn't get close enough to see. But we all know that winter is around the corner and are doing our best to batten down hatches. Todays blogs include:

CRYPTOZOOLOGY: Stunning photographs of a sperm whale eating a giant squid
NATURAL HISTORY: We always do our best to help fellow researchers. Today it is the turn of a Ukranian scientist who wants help identifying an Australian frog
FORTEAN (well sort of): Corinna dreams of flying hedgehogs
CONSERVATION: Lawrie Williams is one of the best new arrivals on the bloggo writer circle. Today he looks at the environmenal disaster facing the Atherton Tablelands..
CFZ ANIMALS: The Midlands Charity Livebearer Auction - Maxy and Jon will be there with either Graham or Corinna. Even Karl is rumoured to be putting in an appearance. They do fantastic all day breakfasts, and last year they did roast pork rolls to die for
SILLINESS: Ronan confounds the rumours about Jon's non-existant monocle
SILLINESS: Ronan confuses things even more

Graham takes time out from fixing a disintegrating window to update the CFZ site.

A nice mixed bag today, although I did wince a bit to find someone's reading the "Three Men Seeking Monsters" book. I haven't quite recovered from finding how I'm portrayed in that book, although thankfully I only have a walk-on part in it. I'm not one of the actual three men. Hmmm, am I a fourth man, then?

Anyway, enough of that, and on to the site updates... which are:

EXTINCTION? - Lawrie Williams on the White Lemuroid Ringtail Possum - victim of climate change

Today is a celebration of the only person in British politics who actually had the right idea. Yesterday Dale D wrote to me asking whether it was (as he heard) now illegal to burn `guys` in the UK. Lord knows, but apparently in Ilfracombe bonfire(s) have been banned and revellers told to watch a video of one instead. Perhaps it is time for a modern day Guido Fawkes to come to the fore.

People on the forteana list have suggested that I change the formatting of these messages so that each item directly links to the item on the blog. (See, I do read them). The reason that I don't do that at the moment is because a lot of people (about 400 a day) still use the cfz.org.uk front page to navigate the blog, and I don't want to leave them in the lurch. I will be redesigning the whole thing in the next few months to make it simpler, and so I have taken everyone's suggestions on board.

I was awoken this morning by the most Godawful gale that I have heard in years. I know that these things are subjective, and perhaps it is just that we are not used to it after what has been a relatively benign spring and summer, but goodness me it was noisy. I used to quite like watching the trees being buffeted about, but now they are MY trees, and I am paranoid enough to wonder if they will blow down (which they didn't) it is not quite as enjoyable an experience. Oh for the halcyon days before I owned any property..
