Terry,

Although I have been involved with LAS and astronomy for several years
now, I still consider myself very much a novice. I have the AS CG5 GT
and really like it. I would agree with some critics that the
instructions are a bit sparse in some places, especially in describing
the polar alignment process, but for my visual use, the tracking is
great and the slewing to objects is dead on and the "Tour" function is a
great way to let the mount take you through a tour of the night sky.
Like much of astro equipment I have noted and observed, there is usually
much more info available online in chat groups and from fellow users
than you will ever get reading manuals, and I think that applies to most
all equipment.

As far as the "arrows" located in the wrong place to begin the
alignment, I ripped those off and basically start by aligning the mount
through the polar alignment hole in the base of the mount. This will
require that the actual scope be perpendicular to the sky in order to be
able to see through the hole. Center Polaris as best as you can, and
then you have closely aligned the mount. Next swing the scope around
and align the scope by centering Polaris in the eyepiece. Once you have
done this you have basically "aligned the arrows". Now, turn on the
mount and proceed with the alignment process detailed in the
instructions with the hand controller, and you are set.

If you are looking for exact alignment for long tracking photo work,
that is a different story and I can't help you with that.

I am an accountant and am deep into tax season for the next couple weeks
and am looking forward to getting back out observing and at LAS events.
I would be glad to meet up with you and help with your mount and the
alignment process if you want.

In the end, I really like my mount and would get it again in a
heartbeat. You can't beat it for the price.

Jeff

Subject: [CG5] Brand New to AS CG 5 GT

Hello!

I have just made a couple of big decisions today as far as my
development in astronomy.

Today I purchased a AS CG5 GT mount for my two refractors. This is a
HUGE step for me. I have always used ALT AZ mounts and stayed away
from GEMS. I had heard so much about the steep learning curves with a
GEM. One ALT AZ proponent told me early on that "I would rather spend
time observing than learning equipment." And that had always stuck
with me. Over time, the fear of the GEM learning curve just got larger.

Today, I decided to try because I want a mount that will track for me.
I like the TO GO features of Celestron's Nexstar scopes. And since I
used the Nexstars with the TO GO in the past, I thought that all I had
to do was learn the GEM itself.

Got a good deal on a new AS GT 5 GT and was reassured that the
assembly was of the this scope would be rather straight forward. My
confidence was rising.

Then I made the mistake of trying to read some instructions and
reviews of the mount and the confidence is waning. I read things
about "dog legs" and arguments about "where the peg should be set in
the leg". I read that "DEC markers as indicated by Celestron are way
off, so you won't get a good alignment unless you make your own fix".
I can't figure out whether this mount is going to be beyond me, or if
these are just fine tunings by those who have mastered the mount.
Heck, I don't even know what a "dog leg" is!

I am hoping that someone in this group can point me to a good
introduction for some one who just wants to get started. I need to
know things like:

- how to assemble the mount and tripod (making adjustments for
Celestron's mislabelling of markers)

- when and how to do a polar alignment? is the polar alignment done
before setting the hand control on time and date and location? will
the hand controller "walk" me through a polar alignment like it does
on a three star alignment or is the polar alignment done without the
help of the hand controller

- will a GPS device liek the CN 16 take away the need to polar align?

- what adjustments should I make to compensate for any "corrections"
need over Celestron's instruction?

Before bothering everyone with this post, I did try to look through
the Files section to see if there was a guide, but could not find any.

Your help would be very much appreciated. Any other ideas on Getting
Started" that I don't even know enough to ask would also be helpful.

Thank you,

Terry McAdams

OOOPPSS.........I think I got my geometry wrong. When I align my mount
the scope is parallel to the sky not perpendicular. In other words, you
have to position the scope so that you can look through the alignment
hole to see Polaris.

I have a major decision to make, and I'd appreciate opinions from
the more experienced CG-5 users on the forum. I am ready to upgrade
my photography platform, which currently consists of the AS CG-5, an
Orion ED-80 and an Orion Starshoot. I also have a C-11, which I
primarily use for visual work due to its weight.

I have assumed for months now that the mount is not adequate for
good-quality photography, but my respect grew recently when I
managed to take 90 second unguided exposures on M51 with round stars
and good tracking. I have tried to use the autoguider port using
MaximDL, but it failed to initialize.

I am tempted to spend the money I have for an major upgrade entirely
on a camera, but am worried that, in the end, the mount will not
truly rise to the demads and I will be left with a beautiful CCD
that struggles to achieve with a sub-par mount. To those of you who
have been imaging for awhile with the CG-5, what is your opinion? I
love the mount, and I have not drifted it yet either, so I realize
that I may not have reached the limit of its potential. The only
logical upgrade for me is the Orion Atlas, which will deftly carry
the C11, for a major chunk of change which will severely cut my
imaging hardware purchase.

I am happy to have such quandaries, no doubt, and I look forward to
any opinions!

The Orion Atlas, A.K.A. Synta EQ-6 is a good visual
mount but a poor astrophotography mount.

The Losmandy G-11 would be a much better choice for
astrophotography with the C11.

I recently went throught the process of making the same decision and
I agree that the G-11 would be a good choice. The Celestron CGE
mount is just as good and you can find a lot of information on both
mounts if you look in the respective Yahoo groups. The concensus
seems to be that the CGE is a better integrated package but more
difficult to work on if repairs are needed. Expect to pay around
$2000+ for used mounts on Ebay or Astromart. I got a Celestron CGE
and am very happy with the build quality and performance.

The CGE mount is an excellent choice that is even
bigger and beefier (and heavier) than the G-11.

Does anyone have an estimate for the accuracy of the CG-5 motorized
mount, in arc-seconds?
I set up a little board in my room around 5m away from the mount, and
used a laser pointer to study the angular position corresponding to 1cm.
I am currently estimating an accuracy of about 24arcseconds-
corresponding to 0.1 degrees. I am wondering how this corresponds to
the specs.
Thanks Matt

Ho Everyone,

I just received a new CG5 GoTo. I'm trying to assemble it and learn
the operation.

My question: is there a good learning guide from an user group or
astronomy club, etc?

Being new to this, I don't find the Manual all that helpful. Very
little on illustrations or pictures to make sure I got it right, and
those that are there are not that helpful, to me.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance

Hi,

Before I had a LXD-75 goto I had a CG5 non Goto.

I have been imaging both wide field and close up planetary
for about 1 year now. Tracking is OK at 388mm but over 1000
guiding and tracking are difficult. I get guiding pixel errors
up to 2.1 or even 3 with Meade Envisage. I just started learning
PHD but I've had some issues with it.

My payload is about 20 lbs including cameras but add more for the
dovetail etc so about 25 lbs. (SCT 8 inch + 66mm ZS WO + Canon Xt +
DSI c)

Would a CG5 Goto mount be more accurate at higher mag or would this be
a parellel move for me. I've considered the ATLAS but it seems to
get a bad rap here.

A Vixen GP-DX would not handle this load well I would think.

Thanks

Greg

The CG-5, LXD-75 and EQ-6 are all made in China.

The CG-5 is a slight step down from the LXD-75.

All three are going to have a heck of a time with the
load you are hauling and with the magnifications you
are working at.

The Vixen GP-DX will blow the doors off of anything
that has ever come out of China in terms of accuracy
and smooth tracking.

IMHO you should be considering a Losmandy G-11 as your
mount upgrade path.

Forget the GPS accessory. It's a waste of money. It just inserts your
location and time into the controller. Nothing more! When you're taking
it to the field, just write the coordinates down in a piece of paper.

I make an adapter that lets you connect an AirCable Serial BlueTooth
adapter to your CG5. This combo provides Bluetooth at about 2/3 the
cost of the BlueStar. You can see it at www.astronomystores.com

I love it when I find a product that really works as it should.
I recently purchased a new astro chair and was so impressed with
it that I just had to write a review and share it. I have no
financial ties with these guys.

Anyway my product review is below.

-Christopher Erickson

***************************************************************

Want to get a scope 50% larger than the one you now have?

Sit down!

I never cease being amazed how much more detail I can see
on any celestial object when in a stable sitting position versus
a standing position. The human mind plays a significant role
in processing the image projected into our eyes by our
telescopes. If your eye is wandering around and moving back
and forth over the eyepiece exit pupil you will perceive less
than when your brain is being fed a steady and uninterrupted
stream of photons. See Dr. Suiter's "wobbly stack" description
in his definitive work on collimating telescopes for more
information.

http://www.willbell.com/tm/tm5.htm

To this end, I have found the astro chair from BuyAstroStuff to
be the best of breed.

http://www.buyastrostuff.com/store/Metal-astro-chair-frame-page.htm

This chair is not only amazingly sturdy, it also has a number of
very nice touches that when combined, really make a difference.
First, it is a quality product. Made by Seiko in Japan (not the
watch maker people but similar quality), this chair has a very
solid feel. The feet are turned 90 degrees so they don't sink into
soft ground as easily as other chairs. The cam locking
mechanism has infinite adjustment that when locked, has no
play whatsoever. It folds flat for easy storage. The seat is locked
even in the flat storage position. It has a foot support for when
you are using the highest seat positions. You have no idea how
nice this feature is until you have used it and gone to another
chair that doesn't have it. The chair can be opened, closed and the
height adjusted even with the thickest gloves on. Padded seat.
User serviceable parts. Textured finish on the metal that allows
secure and slip-free handling even when wet with dew or ice.
The design even provides a natural and convenient top handle.
Last but certainly not least, the price is competitive. Really
competitive. I have used astro chairs that cost twice as much as
the BuyAstroStuff chair that are not nearly as good!

The only suggestion I would make to BuyAstroStuff is to change
the color to white or neon red. Making the chair more visible at
night would make it a bit less likely someone will trip over it!

I give the BuyAstroStuff observing chair five stars. You will too.

Wouldn't 25 arcsec be 24/3600 = 0.00667 degrees, not 0.1 degrees?

60 arcseconds = 1 arcminute
60 arcminutes = 1 degree
3600 arcseconds = 1 degree

25 arcseconds = 0.00694444 degrees

Subject: Switched hand controller and DEC cables by accident: is it fried now?

Hello Everyone,
I bought a CG5 for astrophotography purposes. All was going well; the
GOTO's were within 9 minutes accuracy. Yesterday, I was doing some
general maintenance (cleaning and collimating) and I plugged the hand
controller into the Dec plug, and the Dec cable into the hand
controller plug.
I turned the scope on last night and immediately noticed the hand
controller LCD screen was not lighting up. I realized my mistake and
reversed the cables. The hand controller lit up like normal and seems
to function normally, BUT my GOTO's are off now by 2 to 5 degrees.
They are off both in the initial slews to the alignment stars, as well
as every GOTO slew after that. I tried a factory reset on the
controller; no effect. I re-programmed the controller with the RS-232
cable; no effect. I cycled power off and on several times; no effect.
I tried turning it off and restarting the alignment process at least
half a dozen times; no effect. I verified my polar alignment with my
polar axis finder several times. AAARRGGG!!
Did I permanently damage the encoders or something?
Please help,
Duncan

Who's GOTO system are you using?

Celestron? Meade? Skywatcher? Synta? Orion?

Whichever it is, have you considered calling their customer support?

Christopher,
I forgot to answer your second question: I will call them if I can't
get an answer here. They are, of course, only open weekdays, 8-5:00.
I was really hoping to use it tonight; no moon, clear-ish skies. I've
been looking forward to imaging tonight for weeks, now I messed it all up.

I asked because Celestron isn't the only company that
sells CG-5 mounts with GOTO control systems.

I would double-check your controller configuration.
Location, scope model, etc.

Christopher,
I did a factory reset and it wiped all that info out of the hand
controller. I then re-input my site information carefully (a couple
of times actually); it didn't help.
I'm going to drag the thing out tonight anyway; maybe I'll get lucky
and it'll heal itself.
Can I get the whole group to pray with me?
"Universal Creator, please heal the scope of one confessedly unworthy
fool who connected the cables into the wrong plugs."
Thanks,
Duncan

Update on mount: Thanks for the prayers!
Saturday night, the mount was all over the place; missed slews by 2 to
10 degrees, polar alignment errors reported by the hand controller in
excess of 2 degrees (even though I used a polar axis finder). The
only way to find anything was with the "precise goto" feature.
Sunday night, it was back to its 10 minutes of polar alignment error,
goto's were back to good, but the slews to the initial alignment stars
were still off by more than normal. I have a support request in to
Celestron about any damage I may have caused in my stupidity.
Thanks Christopher,
Duncan

Update on the update:
Celestron says the mistake I made switching the cables is usually
fatal to the mount and involves repairs at the factory for an
undisclosable amount of money.
Fortunatly, the mount seems to be running fine now. Dodged a bullet
on that one!

HI guys--- new to the group. I bought a used CG5 recently as a second
mount. It did not come with motors. I was wondering about where to
purchase them and what they are? Also is there any info how to use the
mount manually? I am rather new to this and would like to learn how to
use the setting circles. ANy suggestions????

thanks for the help!

There are many options available.

The CG-5 is a Chinese clone of the venerable Vixen GP mount and
any motor system for the Vixen GP, GP-DX, Skywatcher EQ-4,
Meade LXD-55/75 and Orion Skyview Pro will work on the CG-5.

There are single axis motor systems, dual-axis motor systems
and full blown GOTO motor systems.

The question is what do you want by way of features and how
much are you willing to spend?

I think I would like a dual axis motor system. A goto would be
really nice, but I have an LXD75 with goto already and was thinking
of using the CG5 as a backup only. You have any links or an idea on
prices? Thanks for the help Christopher!
