FYI -- Judy is the director of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force...
I was recently in Minnesota and heard about this train crash on
the local news.
I found this article about it and I am amazed at some of the
quotes about this being common and that the rail company is having a
"string of bad luck." If it had been the huge proposed rail containers
headed for Nevada in those wetlands, they would have to build really
big causeways. Cask recovery, even if there was no release, would be
very difficult in such areas, and could be very expensive if critical
environment for threatened or endangered species was affected by
recovery & cleanup operations.
Here is a map prepared for the State of NV by the transport
experts who show the routes from the Final Environmental Impact
Statement (FEIS) for rail, highway and barge.
If any of you see areas that you are familiar with that have
"unique local conditions" perhaps you would want to have officials or
local organizations consider the need for additional EIS analysis of
parts of routes. There are also maps with more detail. If you want
any of those or have other ideas, let me know.
