Help provide "Digital Opportunity" in Austin...
...Volunteer with
the Community Technology & Training Centers
at Travis & Reagan High Schools
The CTTC's are a partnership of the Austin Independent School District (Travis &
Reagan High Schools), the Capital Area Training Foundation, and several
community partners, with funding from the City of Austin, the US Dept. of
Education, and private sources. Some basic information is attached.
Please consider volunteering in one of the following ways:
1) Lead a class
1-a) Lead instruction for Preparatory-level classes (keyboarding, mouse use, &
Windows fundamentals)
- One-week class, usually once/month, M-Th 6-9 pm, or 3 Sat's 2-5 pm (12 hours
total).
- Easy, but great experience, and most needed.
- Basic teaching materials provided (handouts, games & tutorials).
1-a-1) Lead a bilingual/Spanish Preparatory class
- similar committment, but students are intended to continue into English
version of same class.
1-b) Lead instruction for Advanced-level classes, variety of topics:
- 5 or 6-week classes, meeting two days/week
- Primarily using web-based lessons.
- Volunteers will assist students working at own pace through online lessons.
- Alternating instructors, short supplementary lectures, and guest speakers
welcome.

1-b-1) Introduction to Linux
- primarily using Debian distibution with Gnome desktop
1-b-2) Introduction to Programming with Java
- using basic Java SDK, and DOS command-line compiler
1-b-3) Introduction to Web Authoring with HTML
- Textbooks/manuals & online resources available
- using Notepad and 1stPage for HTML authoring
1-b-4) Propose or create a new class
- see current course offerings for potential new classes
- ask about areas of high interest (such as multimedia, graphics, CADD,
databases, networking)
2) Assist / Float / Tutor
2-a) Assist in any of our currently scheduled classes (consult current
schedule).
- Commit to one or more days a week for the duration of any scheduled class.
- Take some of the burden off our staff, help individuals who need more
personal attention.
- A working knowledge of the course topic is all that's needed, you do not need
to be a "master".
2-b) Assist/tutor those who are working independently (practicing between
classes, drop-ins, independent-study).
- Special need for more advanced tutors (see advanced-level offerings).
- Drop in on your own schedule or as available, during any open-lab hours.
- Be available to answer questions and trouble-shoot for those who are in
classes or working independently.
- Work on independent-study training materials or surf the web in the meantime.
- Electronic "mentoring" via email or B-board possible.
2-c) Assist job-seekers and career-changers
- Review and edit resumes, cover letters, etc.
- Assist with job searches and career exploration (primarily via Web)
- Be a guest speaker/panelist for special workshops or sessions for clients
seeking entry into high-tech job market
2-d) Assist/tutor learners of Adult Basic Education (ABE)
- Assist those who are learning English, literacy, basic math, studying for
GED, etc.
- Learners will be using self-paced, individualized computer lessons
- Learners may also be taking classes elsewhere
- Special need for bilingual persons (Spanish, other languages possible)
- Currently at Travis HS only.
4) Provide technical support / assistance
4-a) General technical support, trouble-shooting and minor hardware/network
assistance
- evenings, Saturdays, choose your times
- work under supervision of staff systems administrators
- demonstration of competency will be required
4-b) Help set up labs
- hardware configuration, assembly, & network wiring
- at new Centers or upgrading existing labs
- large-effort work days TBA
5) Advise / Consult
- Review or suggest curriculum, software, resources, and professional
development for staff and volunteers
- Consult on high-level systems engineering (Novell, Windows 9x/2000, & Linux
systems)
- Serve on Advisory Board (in formation)

Please come to one of our monthly orientation sessions
(you will need to fill out an application, provising basic info & references):
- 2nd Thursday of each month, 7 pm
At Travis High School, 1211 East Oltorf at IH35
Room 307 (enter doors nearest Denny's)
OR
- Final Saturday of each month, 12 pm
At Reagan High School, 7104 Berkman, near Cameron Road & Hwy 290
Room 405 (enter Technology Wing, nearest Hwy 290)

2) Donate:
- Hardware (computers, networking, instructional, a/v)
- Educational & training software, curriculum materials
- Services (networking, internet bandwidth, consulting)
- Sustaining funding (for instructors, technical support, equipment, etc.)
- Prizes & incentives for students (mouse pads, discount coupons, free classes,
door drizes, etc.)
3) Serve on Advisory Board:
- Program development
- Curriculum and training methods
- Hardware & software needs, planning
- Collaborations, connections to private funding, grant writing, etc.
4) Sponsor
- A class, workshop, or whole Center's operation
- An employee volunteer program, inititative, or workday
5) Recruit / Hire
- Visit CTTC classes or orientations or send notices of opportunities.
- Hire CTTC class graduates as interns or in entry-level positions.
6) Use our sites
- Non-profit and community groups may use facilities for occasional or monthly
meetings
- Computer labs, projection equipment, and high-speed internet available
- Some limitations on software and security, pre-arrangement with site staff
required
7) Spread the word
- link to our website
- distribute brochures to those who may need training
- put us in the news (radio, TV, newspaper, newsletters, e-news, etc)
