1999-2001: This is a "niche" or specialty Discussion E-list for Citizens of Cyberspace who are concerned with the Law and [In] Justice of Libel on the Nets. All who are concerned with communication, reputation, and honesty, are invited: Psycholinguists, Lawyers, Journalists, Internet folks; no formal training is required.

Upon joining, members are requested to post to this e-list a short bio and description of their interests in cyberlibel and email.

Members by being on this list must agree that the list, list owner, and yahoo will not be implicated in any way in any legal actions undertaken by members respective to defamation discussed here. This is to allow the free flow of discussion in a meta-critical forum.

In the future, this topic will probably not be seen as a niche. but a major concern for all writers and readers of Email. Who can say how soon?

The discussion may be intense. (Cyberlibel has some features in common and some in distinction re traditional Libel, or written defamation, and entails some sophisticated and puzzling distinctions particular to Computer Nets). For example, in English villages, falsehoods written about a villager could be retracted by posting a Broadsheet "Retraction" on the Community Tree. What would you do on the Internet?

2000: this list becomes a mainly newsletter and announcements list, 8-16-00, with the introduction of the basically discussion, companion list: CYBERLIBEL-AND-EMAIL-2; members are cheerfully invited to belong to either group or both.
