I have a Canon 1D mark 3 and my partner a Canon 400D.
Both cameras are 10mp, and obvious 1-series features aside there is no
huge difference in IQ for general shooting.
Consider that Canon **may** release a 10mp of the xxD series soon.
As for glass; my recommendation to my partner when she was looking to
buy her first dSLR was the following...
Get the kit lens ( that comes with the 400D ), yes it's nasty, but it
is cheap. Use this kit lens for a month or so and evaluate where it is
letting you down.
Ask yourself the follow... then perhaps buy a second lens to fill the
gap.
Are you not able to get close enough to small objects? --> Buy a marco
lens.
Are you not able to fit everything in to the frame? --> Buy a wide
angle lens.
Is a distant object too small within the frame? --> Buy a telephoto
lens.
Is the shutter speed too low for a sharp image? (That is, low light
photography without a flash.) --> Buy a "fast" lens. (A fast lens is
one with a large maximum aperture. Small f number.)
Ask yourself question about your "style"...
Do you prefer zoom or prime?
Do you want one lens to cover a large focal length range.
Will you buy multiple lenses?
Hope this helps.
