oops!
just re-read message and see i have given info regarding changing
shutter speed when you asked about aperture.
To change apeture in manual you use the front control dial unless
there is custom function which may have chenged this which I cannot
recall. in shutter priority the camera chooses the apeture for correct
exposure.

peter,
when imanual mode you need to use the large control dial on the back
to change the shutter speed but you need to check the wheel is
activated via the main power switch. In av mode the camera picks the
shutter speed according to the apeture selected.

I have owned a Canon 5D Body for approximately 9 months and am
finding (intermittently) that once an aperture is set in either Manual
Mode or Shutter Peiority mode I cannot change it until I shut the
camera down and clear all "Function Settings" and other Settings and
turn the Canon5D back on.
Is it that I'm not knowing how to set things up properly or should it
go back to Canon under warranty ?
Regards,
Peter.
what does the in-camera histogram show? That should tell you something about
where the problem lies.

Hello all I am a recent convert to canon form Nikon (hated it) But
here I am. The first camera I bought about a year ago was the 1D kept
it for a month then got a 1Ds (great camera)to take it's place and the
place of my Kodak 14n I was still cross platform Now I a couple of
months age I went all canon I got two 30D's with all of the toys to go
along with them. I have L series glass as well. I am having a problem
with the images do not come out on the computer as I see them in the
monitor on the camera. They are always 1 or 2 stops under the way the
monitor looks on the camera. I ask a Canon tech at Samy's Camera
(there doing demo for the day) about this and he said I had the
monitors brightness set to high said I had to leave it at 0 on the
brightness scale and that would take care of it needless to say I am
still getting the same results. I have seen this before with some of
my employees that shot Canon but I thought it was the shooter not the
camera. With Nikon if I saw the right exposer in the monitor it was
the same on the computer monitor. I mean any one of my calibrated
monitors (Mac or PC) but I can not get the same results form Canon.
Has any one else had this problem if so what did you do to resolve it?

Hello all, You know how some times we are so technical that we can't
find the simple stuff? Well that is me today. Can some one out there
tell me how to find the actuations on my 1Ds. I need to know so I can
sell it and move up. I can work wonders with this and all of my others
cameras but I can't find the simplest of things. I feel so dumb. Now
ask me how to d an icc profile, or match and monitor and a printer no

I have a Canon 1D mark 3 and my partner a Canon 400D.
Both cameras are 10mp, and obvious 1-series features aside there is no
huge difference in IQ for general shooting.
Consider that Canon **may** release a 10mp of the xxD series soon.
As for glass; my recommendation to my partner when she was looking to
buy her first dSLR was the following...
Get the kit lens ( that comes with the 400D ), yes it's nasty, but it
is cheap. Use this kit lens for a month or so and evaluate where it is
letting you down.
Ask yourself the follow... then perhaps buy a second lens to fill the
gap.
Are you not able to get close enough to small objects? --> Buy a marco
lens.
Are you not able to fit everything in to the frame? --> Buy a wide
angle lens.
Is a distant object too small within the frame? --> Buy a telephoto
lens.
Is the shutter speed too low for a sharp image? (That is, low light
photography without a flash.) --> Buy a "fast" lens. (A fast lens is
one with a large maximum aperture. Small f number.)
Ask yourself question about your "style"...
Do you prefer zoom or prime?
Do you want one lens to cover a large focal length range.
Will you buy multiple lenses?
Hope this helps.
i agree w/ the xti purchased 1 a couple of months ago.
i like it much better than the d200 that i was using

Those are great pic Cathy! My husband and I have been discussing what kind
of camera to get. We've looked at a few. I will tell him of all your
recommendations! As far as what we're willing to spend, it depends on the
camera I suppose. I want a good quality one. I may be taking pics for a

Hi There,
The first thing one must think of is what sort of photos you are wanting
to take. There are various Canon models that are better suited to some
types of photography than others, i.e, landscape, portraiture,
sports.... and then once taken what are you wanting to do with the
photos ? print on 6" x 4" or 10" x 8" or larger. And then of course
there's your budget. May I respectfully suggest you don't start getting
into the pro's and con's of various lens etc., until you've qualified
these important parameters. Let us know the answers to these questions
and we all may be able to be a little more specific.
Regards,
Peter.

Melissa,
I have the Digital Rebel XT and I went and purchased the Promaster 18-200mm
lens...great pics, reasonable price and absolutely indestructible...it was
perfect through a 5 month tour in Iraq...I'd highly recommend it...although with
the XTi, you may want to look at that one as well...

agreed. the Tamron was an early and huge mistake... I returned it after
the first trip into the field and went back to Canon lenses exclusively
(and it turned a winter trip to the Grand Tetons into a photographic
disaster). Yes, the "brand loyalty" was more money, but worth it in the
end. I have a 1Ds, and ended up upgrading ALL my canon lenses to L
glass because the camera was far superior to my EOS-3. It's a continual
game of upgrading, but I've been in L glass lenses for three years now,
and would never go back.
by all means, buy a good medium-priced body - 30D or Rebel XTi, and
then spend the money on really good glass. You will be so much happier.

I concur... the EOS Rebel XTi has 10mp and you can put any EOS lens on
it.. great buy, they body usually retails for $700 to $800. If you are
just starting out, I would reccomend this camera and then buy the best
lens you can afford. You can always upgrade the camera body in the
future and make the XTi your backup in a few years....

Hi Melissa,
How much are you willing to spend? EOS Rebel XTi with a decent lens
should be around $1100-1200.
Cheers,
Al

Hello! I'd like to hear your opinions on the various Canon SLRs. I'm
looking at getting a new camera soon. I want something that's
semiprofessional, if that makes sense. I would love to hear your
suggestions!!
Thank you!

thanks, I'll go check it out..... can't believe I've been in Canon for
so many years and never joined a group. Found this one by accident the
other day. "more" critique and feedback is a good thing!
