Hi David,
Apropos our conversation last week, if you could post this in appropriate
fora that you have access to, that would be greatly appreciated.
"Like-minded experienced iPhone Developer needed immediately to help
finish final development of innovative green-space app approaching
public beta. We're looking for someone who has (1) significant iPhone
development experience, (2) familiarity with the iPhone development
platform (XCode on Mac OS/X), (3) an interest in profit sharing, and
(4) someone who can start ASAP and who has significant time
availability. We're unlikely to have cash to pay anyone until
January/February of 2010, but anyone who is (a) drawn to our corporate
principles at http://www.kismetworldwide.com/principles.html, and (b)
wants to throw down and kick in their iPhone development skills to
work with some great people to get a great app done, should contact
Lie at lie@.... Thanks for your interest."
Thanks for your help, David. We'll get back to the Agile Philanthropy
possibilities once the app is actually launched; in the meantime, Lie Njie
(Craig is his other
not-given-by-the-natives-in-Africa-when-teaching-computer-science-for-the-Peace-\
Corp
name) is absolutely buried trying to finish this thing and get it out the
door.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks again!

on the planet. This also enables us to do humanitarian work which was
heretofore less feasible. Dr. Gerber will discuss the portfolio of exciting
opportunities that Chemists Without Borders are able to pursue as a result
of the generous volunteerism of our members chemists and non-chemists
alike and the benefits of the Information Age.

an Executive Associate accredited by the Institute for Independent Business
and a founding member of Advice That Works. He is Managing Director of
Business Development International, a lifestyle marketing company.
Dr. Gerber's experience ranges from academic medical research to patented
new product development in a no-walls start-up and in Fortune 100 R&D; and
from idea processing and information management to entrepreneurial lifestyle
marketing and the development of B-quadrant businesses on the Internet.
Bego was educated at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, has Master's and
Doctoral degrees from the University of California, and was a postdoctoral
fellow at The Johns Hopkins University. Bego is a passionate Court Appointed

Newer JVM languages such as JRuby, Groovy, and Scala let you work at a higher
level than Java. This talk will show you ScalaTest, a new testing tool that will
let you work at a higher level than JUnit and TestNG. You'll learn about
high-level features of Scala such as traits and self-types, implicit conversions
and parameters, functions and closures, and internal DSLs, and see how ScalaTest
exploits these features to help you work more productively. You'll see how you
can reduce the lines of test code you write by half and more, how to mix Scala
into your existing JUnit or TestNG infrastructure, and how to use Scala in
various testing styles, including unit testing, behavior-driven development,
integration and acceptance testing, and high-level property-based testing. You
need not already know Scala to attend this talk, as you will be taught just
enough Scala to understand the examples.
Bill Venners is president of Artima, Inc., publisher of Artima Developer
(www.artima.com). He is author of the book, Inside the Java Virtual Machine, a
programmer-oriented survey of the Java platform's architecture and internals.
His popular columns in JavaWorld magazine covered Java internals,
object-oriented design, and Jini. Active in the Jini Community since its
inception, Bill led the Jini Community's ServiceUI project, whose ServiceUI API
became the de facto standard way to associate user interfaces to Jini services.
Bill is also the lead developer and designer of ScalaTest, an open source

About the Event
Prototype self-driving cars have been built by small, innovative teams
thanks to a military-funded contest. But they can change the civilian world
in astounding ways. This talk outlines how this technology could save
millions of lives and make efficient electric (or other new technology) cars
marketable and practical, resulting in major reductions in pollution and the
elimination of the need to import oil.
The consequences extend into the realm of social interaction, manufacturing
and the very nature of cities -- perhaps the largest effect on the world
that computers may have in the medium term. But the challenge is not just
technological, but also political and social, and the results are not all
upsides.
About the Speaker
Brad Templeton is currently early in the development of Caller App, the
"reinvention of the telephone call itself" and chairman of the Electronic
Freedom Foundation.
Templeton founded and ran ClariNet Communications Corp., the first
internet-based content company, then sold it to Newsedge Corporation in
1997. ClariNet publishes an online electronic newspaper delivered for live
reading on subscribers machines.
He's been active in the computer network community since 1979, participated
in the building and growth of USENET from its earliest days and in 1987 he
founded and edited rec.humor.funny, the world's most widely read
computerized conference and today the world's longest running blog. He has
been a software company founder, and is the author of a dozen packaged
microcomputer software products.
Brad also sits on the advisory boards for a few internet startups, including
BitTorrent, Inc and is also on the board of the Foresight Institute (A
Nanotech think-tank). Via ClariNet, He was a plaintiff in the case to get
the USA's Communications Decency Act successfully overturned in the supreme
court. He was born in 1960, grew up near Toronto and now lives in Silicon
Valley in California. He holds a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from the
University of Waterloo.

Description: The consumer and enterprise Internet has become deeply woven
into our daily lives. Its importance continues to grow, further driven by an
increasing shift from on-premises software to the SaaS delivery model.
Naturally, the data centers supporting all this growth are seeing a
corresponding explosion in scale and complexity.
Virtualization is part of the industry's response. Beyond its current uses,
the bigger news is the role of virtualization as an innovation enabler: a
game-changing paradigm that's altering how IT infrastructure is designed and
deployed. This transformation is impacting everything from data-center
architecture to the delivery of end-client applications.
Join us for an enlightening panel discussion various disruptive
technologies that are shaping the future of IT.

Received from my personal network:
Successful, well funded (Kleiner Perkins) "pre-IPO" startup is looking for
exceptional Server Engineers/Architects.
Key words in order of importance LAMP, PHP (PHP5), Java. Heavy-duty
transactional environment. Somebody from Facebook, Yahoo, Amazon - who has
lived to tell the story of an exponential growth into terabytes - would be a
good candidate.
If you the one - please send me your CV.

Join us for an enlightening panel discussion various disruptive technologies
that are shaping the future of IT.

About the Event
Dead tree media is crashing if not dying--major big city daily newspapers
have closed in Denver and Seattle, newspapers everywhere are shedding staff
and costs as fast as they can. Our panelists have extensive experience in
leading some of the new delivery formats emerging on the web and will talk
about these differences and what they mean for readers as well as businesses
who need to find replacements for channels to their own consumers.
About the Speakers
Tom Foremski - "In May 2004 I became the first journalist from a leading
newspaper to resign and become a full-time blogger. I had one of the top
jobs in journalism and I had never blogged. Yet I knew in my gut that the
timing was right, and that the business of online journalism would continue
to improve while the print business model would continue to worsen."
Tom is the founder of SiliconValleyWatcher.com
<http://SiliconValleyWatcher.com> and a Founding Fellow of the Society for
New Communications Research. He was previously US Technology Correspondent
and a columnist for the Financial Times of London and Editor-in-Chief for a
West Coast News-High tech news agency. Foremski holds a bachelors of science
degree in Chemistry and Management Science from the Royal Holloway College
of the University of London.
Carolyn Pritchard is the managing editor of Giga Omni Media
<http://gigaomnetwork.com> , a network of technology-focused blogs including
GigaOM.com <http://gigaom.com>, which is consistently ranked among the most
influential technology sites on the web. Prior to that, she spent nearly six
years as a reporter and editor at MarketWatch.com. Her financial markets
training began in Canada, where she was licensed to trade securities and did
a brief stint on that country's version of Wall Street. She holds a Masters
in Journalism from UC Berkeley.
