About the Speakers
Richard Hamilton Gibbs is an entrepreneur in the computer, computer
peripheral, media and home entertainment markets currently researching how
technological advances are affecting distribution models for music and
movies and how adherence to traditional models are damaging the
profitability of mainstream entertainment businesses, sabotaging revenues
for artists, and alienating consumers based on competition between
proprietary and non-proprietary platforms.
Steven W. Fowkes is the Director of the Cognitive Enhancement Research
Institute (http://www.ceri.com) and a co-author of the 1993 book Smart Drugs
II. Steve's expertise is the use of generic substances (foods, dietary
supplements and patent-expired pharmaceuticals) to treat both "normal"
age-related mental decline (e.g., "senior moments" or chronic "brain fog")
and overt cognitive diseases (e.g., Down's syndrome and Alzheimer's
disease). In 2002, he invented the first of a series of vector-directional
polymers with nanostructural self-assembly capabilities, which he is now
developing in two startups. He will contrast the divergent developmental
challenges with generic vs. proprietary technologies to explain why both
leave viable solutions sitting unused on the shelf.
Tom Nufert is a co-founding partner with Steve Fowkes in Nanopolymer Systems
(http://nanopolymersystems.com) and ThioCell (the nanostructured-battery
company). Tom was a co-founder of Array BioSciences, which developed a
universal spit-on-a-chip bioanalytical system (merging chemistry, biology
and physics) and TRC Corporation, which developed chromium-based
pharmaceutical treatments for insulin resistance (syndrome X). He has
extensive knowledge of self-care treatments for a variety of chronic
degenerative conditions ranging from the near-universal-in-America insulin
resistance to the #2 and #3 causes of death‹heart disease and cancer.

Yahoo is no stranger to functional programming languages. It has had significant
products in languages like Lisp and Scheme. Somehow Erlang, and other function
languages, are often overlooked when most developers are researching various
problems and systems. This is very unfortunate given the power and flexibility
that these languages provide. At Yahoo there are places where functional
languages make a phenomenal difference in the way problems and solutions are
approached. This presentation will cover how Erlang, a powerful and flexible
functional language, gave us exactly what we needed at a critical time and how
it was approached as a production language at Yahoo.
Nick Gerakines is a software engineer and technologist in the Silicon Valley. At
Yahoo he worked on the backend and infrastructure team developing next
generation federated data storage systems, driving test framework development
and highly concurrent Erlang application systems. Currently he works in the
Mobile group at Yahoo developing native iPhone applications and exposing other
Yahoo groups to ways to developing iPhone applications. He is the author of the
recent book "Facebook Application Development" (John Wiley & Sons, Inc,
published 2008) and is currently writing another book for the same publisher
titled "Developing Erlang Web Applications" expected to release in early 2009.
Nick resides in Mountain View with his wife, Carolyn, and daughter, Vanessa.
Meetings are open to the public and are free of charge.

Leading Indicator Dashboards
Measuring the right things improves your ability to predict
outcomes, motivate desired behaviors, and earn needed resources and
clout. Most metrics we focus on, such as revenue, profit, market
share and customer satisfaction, are in fact lagging indicators --
because they measure what's already happened. Get ahead of the
curve by identifying leading indicators that enable you to pro-
actively manage your programs, course-correct midstream, and predict
those ever-important overall measures of success. Differentiate
symptoms versus sources of program success or disaster, access
useful tools and templates, and see how you can measure and motivate
things that are difficult to quantify. Come learn about Leading
Indicator Dashboard techniques that can make all the difference in
your project's success.
Lynn Hunsaker, founder of ClearAction --
<http://www.clearaction.biz> -- a consultancy for customer
experience optimization, has a knack for helping people clearly see
what is needed for immediate action.
Lynn mentors executives in improving the customer experience: to
deliver brand promises, prevent customer hassles, minimize churn,
and heighten sustained profit. Lynn has rich hybrid skills and
executive experience in marketing and market research; process
improvement and quality; organizational development and change
management; leadership and teaching. She is an AMA Professional
Certified MarketerTM, ASQ Certified Quality Manager, Qualified MBTI®
Practitioner and past president of Silicon Valley American Marketing
Association where her team received AMA's Chapter Excellence Award.
Lynn worked two decades at Applied Materials, Business Insights,

A startup whose founders have a highly profitable history of creating
and selling software companies in the valley is looking for an iPhone
engineer.
Need to port a simple but addictive game to iPod touch / iPhone. The
server side (no-frills LAMP) already exists, and the (more complex)
version of the game is done in Flash.
Expect to launch the game in a couple of months and most likely sell
the company in a year. Compensation: common stock (we've allocated a
large equity chunk for just this purpose). The potential reward is an
order of magnitude higher than what you'd expect to get from regular
moonlighting.

Dear Club members,
Our Club had been created to facilitate "offline" face-to-face meetings of
its members. IMHO, our 5 years of existence and over 400 members are good
proofs that social networking can exist outside of Internet as well.
However, why not to use help of some of popular tools ;-)
As you may know, we have a special LinkedIn group open exclusively to
CoolTech Club members. Apparently, it is quite convenient tool to look for
additional contacts, job hunting and so on.
So far, less then 1/3 of Club members had used opportunity to sign up. If
you didn't, please go to http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/535 and follow few
simple steps.
I also recommend establishing a direct link to me and other Club members.
Please indicate that you are Club member while sending "invite" .
