As was said before, the DI/O outputs are at 7v stock. You need to drop them down to consumer levels before using it with consumer equipment. You can change

well, you want to use a 75 ohm coax cable, for sure. (tho i doubt not having this would cause the problems you seem to be encountering.) you could measure

The airport express does have a toslink out. I run; express-->mini-toslink/toslink cable-->toslink to coax converter-->coax in on the art-->TS out-->ts/rca
