Hi, Folks,
Throcky quoted:  "Now that most of us don’t rely on animals for our livelihood and transportation, we’re no longer using the interjections that apply to them - like the hooshtah that “encourages” camels; the hoy to drive hogs and the hyke that sends dogs off to the chase (as if they needed the encouragement). Gip expresses anger to a horse (or, when addressed to a person, is a Seinfeldian Elaine Benes-style “get out!”). Even the most unencouragable of animals, the donkey (think Eeyore) has one: proot, which supposedly makes a donkey move faster, or at least makes you feel as if you’re doing something."

Nope, never heard it, but when I lived in Brazil it was common to hear donkey drivers holler "HOO-ah"  which is the word "rua" or "street" in Portuguese.  The R sounds like our H.  Maybe of we hollered "road" it would be similar, but I can't think of anything proot sounds like.  What country are they talking about?  Gip (gyp) is a female dog according to Kentucky coonhound breeders, those same people used seek to send them off at a field trial.  Hoy is Spanish for "today" and I never heard "hyke"

I wass going to suggest we ask you if it was a German word but you would
have told us that if it were, maybe from an African dialect? Swaheili or
something. The reason I wondered if it was German is that the dog trainers
use German words sometimes but I don't " know" anything about the word.Where
was Stevenson when he was talking about the word, I have never read this
Stevenson Book although I know about it, guess I should read it huh?

Hi - Jim was nice enough to let me join and post this message about the donkey and mule pages on my website RightPet.

RightPet is an educational site which allows individuals to rate the breeds/species of animals they've owned, and recommend services/businesses they like.

I'd be honored if some group members could share their insights on what it's like to share your life with a donkey or mule. We're looking to gather thoughts on their strengths and challenges, what kinds of owners/purposes they are appropriate for etc..

Here are their pages -

Mules

Donkeys

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.

of fantastic pictures there.

The photographer is above in an airplane or helicopter. The sun is to the side of the zebras, way to their sides. So yes, we are looking down at their backs from above, but the light makes the shadows big and shows the profile. Note that the shadow side of the zebras are darker, as their left sides are shaded. This picture plays tricks with your eyes too, as you focus first on the shadows, then on the zebras.

When the sun is directly above, you have no shadow, when almost directly above, a short shadow.  The sharper the sun’s angle, the longer the shadow. Too make a perfect profile, as in some of those, the sun would have to be at their side—while the photo is distinctly of their backs.

You have a tiny zebra, with  a larger zebra to the left, and then two shadows—but clearly, you should not be able to see the smaller zebra’s shadow.

When two animals are side by side, their shadows will be merged, not separate.

The animals to the left have their shadows to their left—the sun was to their right. The animals to the right have their shadows to the left—the sun was to their right. Tiny sun.

Looks to me exactly as Martha explained, all the shadows coming from the same fixed point as though the photo was made at a time when shadows were long (probably dusk) from almost directly above.

looks to me like it was taken from directly above and the sun was
very low in the sky, near sunset I think. Feet aren't going to block
shadows, and if the sun is that low, that's all that is blocking
them, also explains why they are so large. I played shadow games with
my kids in the late afternoon, they loved doing things with their
hands and seeing their 30 foot long giant shadow doing them.

But if you doubt, go to the National G web site and check them out
there.

Hi All,

A friend sent me an email of the National Geographic pictures of the
year. There were 30 pictures, so I can't share them all with you. But
I thought this one of the zebras and their shadows was absolutely
amazing.

interesting... i love detecting photoshop frauds, but this one seems legit. you CAN see the smaller zebra's shadow if it is small enough to potentially fit under the bigger one's belly, thus casting its own shadow

distant sun............  at sunset.

i looked for errors, drew lines from the animals' heads and backends to their equivalent in the shadows and the lines are more or less parallel, as they should be w the vanishing point so far away.

It is striking, I was thinking about it last night  and thought it might be a transposed negative but whatever it is a wonderful photo. I spent half an hour on the nite this noon and never found that photo or the series because each time I would come to a series I went throught the whole series, when I get the chance I have to go back and look for them.

It's almost like an illusion (or a cave painting!), so I can see how different people with different types of vision and minds would see it in various ways.  Just gorgeous.  :-)

interesting... i love detecting photoshop frauds, but this one seems legit. you CAN see the smaller zebra's shadow if it is small enough to potentially fit under the bigger one's belly, thus casting its own shadow

distant sun............  at sunset.

i looked for errors, drew lines from the animals' heads and backends to their equivalent in the shadows and the lines are more or less parallel, as they should be w the vanishing point so far away.

But

I thought this one of the zebras and their shadows was absolutely

amazing.

looks to me like it was taken from directly above and the sun was
very low in the sky, near sunset I think. Feet aren't going to block
shadows, and if the sun is that low, that's all that is blocking
them, also explains why they are so large. I played shadow games with
my kids in the late afternoon, they loved doing things with their
hands and seeing their 30 foot long giant shadow doing them.

But if you doubt, go to the National G web site and check them out
there.

I noticed that the picture was sort of strange and thought about it in bed
last night even I think that it is a negative reversal. You know if you took
the negative and turned it over to print it but I want to go read about the
series anyway.

Was there some accompanying explanation? Because this one, if you study it,
is physically impossible. You'll notice what should be full shadows where
there should be partials, two full shadows when one should be fully blocked,
and one shadow of a zebra that should be completely blocked by a bigger
zebra...sorry, I can't figure out any angle of the sun that would produce
what they claim. Something is fishy.

Dear Martha,
We got Sunny back today!  A man saw him running down a busy road in a neighboring town. He stopped and caught him and took him home and put him in his garage.  He bought a big bag of oats, and fed him and said Sunny woofed it down like he had not eaten in days.  The man who found him had a 5 year old daughter, and she fell in love with him, and petted him all day. The man then emailed us and Ed was there this morning, first thing. Sunny was so happy to see Ed, he wrapped himself around him.
We just had the news here and they took pictures in the dark. Thank you and all the people that have been praying.  I think the great energy and prayers helped.  Who gets their truck and donkey back??? The police are investigating, but we are just happy to get him back.  Sunny made a bee line for his mother, when he got home.  He is a little wary now, but still very affectionate.  The only thing that was bad, he has a raw place on his nose from them leaving the halter on for two weeks, and he is a little skinny.  He now does NOT want the halter on. I think he was tied up somewhere for those two weeks.
I sure wish I knew what he went thru.
Fondly,
Angela

[Attachment(s) from Virginia Bowen included below]

Hi everyone:

I’ve been out of pocket for so many months now.  And I’ve sorely missed talking donkeys with everyone.  I’ll be trying to catch up, but I think it’s still going to be a while before I’m able to participate again.

I’ve had a horrid year.  For those that don’t know, Van and I split up earlier this year.  He moved back to California, and I stayed here in Texas, in the house we had JUST rented and moved into with the herd.  I still – for the time being at least – have the three donkeys, my mule, and my one youngest Quarter Horse.  While Van left me some money (since I wasn’t working), it’s long gone now (not nearly enough).  And I’m still looking for work.

That’s the main reason for this e-mail – other than to wish you all well and let you know I still think about y’all very often.  I wanted to ask if anyone here has any leads on jobs?  Specifically, I’m looking for either a ranch manager job (that would be my ideal, as long as I can bring my herd and my two dogs with me), or an administrative office job.  I’m outside of Austin right now, but for a well paying/”the right” job I’ll move just about anywhere.  I can’t afford to be picky right now!  It’s a tough time looking for work.  I have a rather considerable resume of administrative work, but my brother-in-law tells me that he and my sister know some folks with PhD’s that are having as much trouble as I am, too.  It’s just really rough out there.  It’s so bad that I’m now seeing employers demanding absolute perfection – because they CAN.  Secretarial jobs are demanding degrees!  (speaking of, I didn’t’ get finished with mine before this happened, so that’s another bummer from this year, having to drop that!  I’m only maybe 30 credits from getting the damned thing!).

On the positive side, one of the first things I did after Van left was go adopt myself a dog.  Well, technically I adopted two.  At the time I was doing some work at PetSmart as a dog trainer (I did that eons ago in California, too).  It doesn’t pay anywhere close to enough to live on, and my Mom’s health deteriorated badly earlier this year, necessitating my quitting that job.  Ugh.

Anyway, while working there, the local adoption group that brings dogs in every Saturday wooed me into “fostering” a Blue Heeler named Peyton.  Any of you who know me know that was not a very good idea with my soft heart.  I brought him home against my better judgment because the very next day, another foster group was bringing me a Mastiff/Great Dane cross to meet.  I was seriously looking for a Dane and this girl is gorgeous and has a great, quiet, temperament.  She reminds me so much of the donkeys.  And her name was Blackjack!!!  She’s just as sweet as my big boy Blackjack/Pooh Bear.  So she arrives – and stays, and then eventually Peyton and she became such good buddies that I couldn’t see him going away.  *sigh*  But they’re good dogs, and it’s fun having them around – having an indoor animal again is wonderful for me.

I’ve attached a few photos of the “family”.  The one of Edie isn’t great, but it’s the best of the latest bunch I’ve taken.  I guess I need to get out there today and get some really good ones of her!   BTW, Peaches da Mule is getting SO much more trusting with me.  It’s been really nice gaining her trust so there are some good things that came from being alone and unemployed this year!  LOL.

If anyone has any job leads, please do let me know.  I’ll be eternally grateful!!

Fondly,
Angela
