well i say good for Monte for getting right back on!  since thank the Lord he wasn't hurt, don't you worry so much that you make him scared... as for ponies, we usually tell people that an ex-rope horse or ex-ranch horse is the best bet - well-trained, been there done that, and if they DO have an issue, still big enough for mom or dad to get on and do some schooling.  some ponies are too small for that which can be a real problem if they get started on bad behavior...
 
but i know how you feel!  i watched my 8-year-old get bucked off and do a 1-point landing ON HER CHIN - i was running over just KNOWING her jaw was broken at a minimum... but nope!  she had to dig some gravel out of her chin and that was it...

ok I'm sending this to y'all cause I know y'all will understand.  BUT I got the fright of my life this afternoon when MY old 26 something year old KID broke, gentle as a dog horse, crow hopped Monte off!  This is SO unlike Buck, and yeah, he's 26 something years old, tooo old to be acting like a colt.  But we have a front coming in, and he's fat (he gets extra cause he's got bad teeth and despite having his teeth floated still spills more than he eats-get fed with a morral more times than not), and I guess he felt frisky, the old coot. We had Monte in the round pen (no rocks and Buck gets tender footed on rocks) and Cody and I were both in there, and he was riding by himself-as in he holds the lead rope we walk beside him, he's done it a zillion times before in the pen, with one of us by him. He got (his little legs don't even clear the saddle itself really so kicking is pointless) buck up to a walk, and then got him up to a half walk half trot thing-trotting is his fav-we haven't attempted loping yet, and the old stink, ducked his head took three crow hop jumps, which Monte rode, and then turned, which Monte didn't ride.  Cody and I were both right there, and couldn't get to him in time.  He hit flat on his belly. Scared the daylights out of me.  Here comes the funny part.  Monte fussed for 2 secs (mad cause he got dirt in his mouth), and then giggled, got back on rode for 30 more mins, all the while telling Cody "dad I rode a bronc like you did"-been amazed since Cody rode the bronc at the ranch rodeo in August-, and cried when we made him get off to put old Buck up. Didn't phase him a bit, thank goodness, but the old coot won't get any more favors either, he'll dang sure be warmed up good before Monte gets on him again! But little man thinks he's a big shot now, even had to call both gran-grans and tell them that he rode a bronc like daddy did. lol This is Monte's official first buck off date, my mom said I was about that age and Cody's mom said he was about that age, so I guess he's following in our footsteps.  We'll see if Cody or I either one, have any hair left by the time he's grown. lol Note: mom is thinking a pony may be better not so high to fall from, dad is vetoing it, citing he's got to grow up and not be a baby, plus the obvious dangers of a pony too.

Nope, never heard it, but when I lived in Brazil it was common to hear donkey drivers holler "HOO-ah"  which is the word "rua" or "street" in Portuguese.  The R sounds like our H.  Maybe of we hollered "road" it would be similar, but I can't think of anything proot sounds like.  What country are they talking about?  Gip (gyp) is a female dog according to Kentucky coonhound breeders, those same people used seek to send them off at a field trial.  Hoy is Spanish for "today" and I never heard "hyke"

I wass going to suggest we ask you if it was a German word but you would
have told us that if it were, maybe from an African dialect? Swaheili or
something. The reason I wondered if it was German is that the dog trainers
use German words sometimes but I don't " know" anything about the word.Where
was Stevenson when he was talking about the word, I have never read this
Stevenson Book although I know about it, guess I should read it huh?

Hi - Jim was nice enough to let me join and post this message about the donkey and mule pages on my website RightPet.

RightPet is an educational site which allows individuals to rate the breeds/species of animals they've owned, and recommend services/businesses they like.

The photographer is above in an airplane or helicopter. The sun is to the side of the zebras, way to their sides. So yes, we are looking down at their backs from above, but the light makes the shadows big and shows the profile. Note that the shadow side of the zebras are darker, as their left sides are shaded. This picture plays tricks with your eyes too, as you focus first on the shadows, then on the zebras.

Looks to me exactly as Martha explained, all the shadows coming from the same fixed point as though the photo was made at a time when shadows were long (probably dusk) from almost directly above.

looks to me like it was taken from directly above and the sun was  
very low in the sky, near sunset I think. Feet aren't going to block  
shadows, and if the sun is that low, that's all that is blocking  
them, also explains why they are so large. I played shadow games with  
my kids in the late afternoon, they loved doing things with their  
hands and seeing their 30 foot long giant shadow doing them.

But if you doubt, go to the National G web site and check them out  
there.

i looked for errors, drew lines from the animals' heads and backends to their equivalent in the shadows and the lines are more or less parallel, as they should be w the vanishing point so far away.

It is striking, I was thinking about it last night  and thought it might be a transposed negative but whatever it is a wonderful photo. I spent half an hour on the nite this noon and never found that photo or the series because each time I would come to a series I went throught the whole series, when I get the chance I have to go back and look for them.

Looks to me exactly as Martha explained, all the shadows coming from the same fixed point as though the photo was made at a time when shadows were long (probably dusk) from almost directly above.

Looks to me exactly as Martha explained, all the shadows coming from the same fixed point as though the photo was made at a time when shadows were long (probably dusk) from almost directly above.

looks to me like it was taken from directly above and the sun was  
very low in the sky, near sunset I think. Feet aren't going to block  
shadows, and if the sun is that low, that's all that is blocking  
them, also explains why they are so large. I played shadow games with  
my kids in the late afternoon, they loved doing things with their  
hands and seeing their 30 foot long giant shadow doing them.

But if you doubt, go to the National G web site and check them out  
there.

I noticed that the picture was sort of strange and thought about it in bed
last night even I think that it is a negative reversal. You know if you took
the negative and turned it over to print it but I want to go read about the
series anyway.

We got Sunny back today!  A man saw him running down a busy road in a neighboring town. He stopped and caught him and took him home and put him in his garage.  He bought a big bag of oats, and fed him and said Sunny woofed it down like he had not eaten in days.  The man who found him had a 5 year old daughter, and she fell in love with him, and petted him all day. The man then emailed us and Ed was there this morning, first thing. Sunny was so happy to see Ed, he wrapped himself around him. 
We just had the news here and they took pictures in the dark. Thank you and all the people that have been praying.  I think the great energy and prayers helped.  Who gets their truck and donkey back??? The police are investigating, but we are just happy to get him back.  Sunny made a bee line for his mother, when he got home.  He is a little wary now, but still very affectionate.  The only thing that was bad, he has a raw place on his nose from them leaving the halter on for two weeks, and he is a little skinny.  He now does NOT want the halter on. I think he was tied up somewhere for those two weeks.
I sure wish I knew what he went thru.
